Hunt Mota Park staff took better advantage of the natural terrain, making the track notice· ably longer and adding some sweet off-cam· ber turns. Twenty·three 125cc Novice riders were locked, cocked and.,ready to rocket out of the starting gate, with thoughts of Independence Day still bursting like Roman candles inside their helmets. Bill Patnode exploded out front to lead the pack to the holeshot, with Tyler Sedlmeier hooking up on the inside, trying his best moon·shot moves through turns one and two. Ryan Nye, Kenneth Crane and Justin Loope were bar to bar to bar going into tum one, but only Crane and Nye would clear turn two's gravitational forces still on course; Patnode got lost in space, allowing Crane, Sedlmeier. Rick Menke and Nye on by. Crane lit his afterburners, while Sedlmeier was trying to slingshot his way up to challenge for the lead, and Menke and Nye went side by side, moonwalking their way through the big, wide, fast. sweeping corners. Like a bottle rocket, Nye took control of third, while Shannon Richardson burst his way up into the fifth posi. tion and was still climbing. Crane was now feeling the pressure and washed out while leading, scrubbing his mission to take the win and allowing Sedlmeier and Nye to skyrocket out front and battle for the win. Nye, the "Suzuki Guy," managed to hang on to take the win in a highly explosive battle to the end with Sedlmeier. Menke, Richardson and a late· charging Michael Miller rounded out the top five finishers. There was a short brea k to enjoy the WNYMA Spring Series awards and trophy presentation, thanks to Terri Clarke, "Yak," Chris Moser, Leslie Stewart and Les Draudt. Awards included seven new LA Sleeve/Pro X piston certificates, four $100 product certificates for the Mini classes from Works Performance Products, and $500 in DP Brake pads - all courtesy of WNYMA sponsors. These sponsors and many. many more continue to help make the WNYMA the number-one motocross series in western New York for more than three decades. Twenty-three 125cc Novices had their fuses lit and throttles pinned, waiting for the gate to drop on moto two. Crane wasn't wast· ing any time, and he took the holeshot, with Menke leading a powder keg of red-hot competitors, all shooting it out for precious WNYMA Summer Series points, as well as separate Challenge Series points. Crane had the lead over Menke; then he lost the lead to Menke; then he had the lead over Menke: then he lost the lead again to Menke - all between exiting turn one and exiting turn two. Miller was the next to challenge and pass Crane, who was losing his grip but was still on the gas, as was Richardson, who was gassing his way up to challenge the top five riders. Miller flat out cornered Menke to rocket his way out front at the same time Nye lit his own tail feathers on fire and flew past Crane for the third slot. Miller and Menke took the white fiag side by side, and each gave the other a glance as they launched their way over the finish-line jump and put the power to the ground. Nye had his hands full staying ahead of the hardcharging Crane, who in tum was flying as fast as he could in order to hold off a late charge by Sedlmeier. Miller won this battle, taking the win in moto two, but it was Nye's '·3 bangbang performance that earned him first over· all. Menke (3-2) sizzled for second overall. Miller (5-1) was third overall, and Sedlmeier (2-5) and Crane (6-4) finished out the top five overall finishers. TRe WNYMA and the Uplinger and Fox families thanked the motocross industry leaders who donated products to help raise funds for injured riders. RaceGates.com donated a three· man starting gate, DP Brakes donated brake pads, Mxride.com donated Troy Lee DeSigns gear, LA Sleeve donated four Pro X Cylinders, Motion Pro donated products, Brock Sellards autographed some cool gear, and the whole WNYMA family has responded with "Fast 50 n races to raise funds, while Silver Springs Racing put together a benefit motocross riding school with help from the Austin family to raise funds and help the injured members of the WNYMA family, 65: 1. AMA Grand National Cross Country Series Round 9: MSR Wisp GNCC Scott Summers Eyes the Wisp BY JASON WEIGANDT MCHENRY, MD, JUNE 29 The Wisp at Deep Creek Mountain Resort provides a totally different venue for racing from any other round of the AMA Grand National Cross Country Series. The luxurious local community and beautiful ski trails and golf links provide a strange contrast to woods rac· ing. But the strangest sight at this years' run· ning of the MSR Wisp GNCC wasn't the ski resort; it was the sight of retired five·time GNCC Champion Scott Summers rolling up to the line on a Honda XR650. "I never had a chance to race here," said Summers. "I like this facility so much, I would race here no matter what the track was like. This place is so nice; it's like Lake Tahoe, with some of the houses and scenery around here." Summers retired in 2001 due to a series of leg injuries, but he returned to racing in the Vet A class just so he could get a shot at the Wisp. He didn't get the holeshot in his class, but he moved into the lead quickly and began catching some of the slower Pro riders. By the end of the race, he had pulled out a solid seventh overall and first Amateur - a great ride for the champ. "It was great to be out there again and have the people cheering," said Summers. Phil Smith and Thomas Pierce ran second and third in the Vet A class. The top Amateur out of the usual GNCC pack was RER Motor City's Nathan Kanney, who is proving that when he finishes races, he can't be touched. Kanney left his class right off the start and never looked back, taking 13th overall on the day. '" was battling it out a bit with Ryan Rodgers," said Kanney, "Finally I built up a good lead on him, and then I just stood up and rode real smooth the rest of the way." Rodgers was second (and 14th overall), just 40 seconds behind_ Third went to Greg Gillian, Scott Watkins won the 200cc A class and finished 23rd overall on his Kawasaki. Watkins had to battle with Kyle Chaney and Charles Mullins early on before securing the lead and running away with a win. Tommy Yeator came through for second, and Kevin Bennett was third. Todd Morain put in his best ride of the season to win the Open A class and claim a solid 30th overall on the day. Grove City Motorsports/Gas Gas rider Todd Marrow finished second. 50 P/W (4-8): I. len Tilleck (Yam); 2. Dana Zampatorl (Yom); 3. Jade Repass (Yam): 4. Marcus Weterbury (YlIm); 5. Rodgers then rode smart to take his second class win of the year. In the two-hour GNCC morning race, Andrew Matusek rode to an overall win and first in the 200cc C class. Fellow 200cc C rider Travis Shaw ran second overall. Multitime AMA National Enduro Champion Dick Burleson won the Industry class and finished third overall on his KTM 125. In the Women's class, Team Green Kawasaki's Heather Wilson put in her best performance yet, nailing fifth overall on her way to winning the class again. With eight wins in nine races, Wilson has clinched the Women's class title. In the Super Senior A class. GNCC veteran Terry Mealer outdueled former AMA Enduro champ Ron Bohn for the win. In Youth racing, Am Pro/Morgantown Yamaha/MSR prodigy Thad DuVall put together another dominant performance, winning the Mini Senior class and taking first overall in the Youth race. Brad Spevok took second, and Ryan McGaha was third. In the Mini Intermediate class, Kailub Russell tied his best finish ever with fifth overall and the Intermediate win. Tyler MacDonald was second, and Jerod Stoner, who had been winning a bunch of races in the class, crashed and had to settle for third. The Mini Junior class came down to another big battle between David Snyder and Corey Buttrick, and they had a good time, Snyder just switched to Team Blackhawk and Suzukis (from Yamahas), and he hasn't missed a beat. He won, and Buttrick was second. Eli Suter jumped on the podium on a box-stock Honda CR85_ He didn't even have numbers on his bike_ And in the Mini 65 ranks, Walker Fowler walked to a convincing win over Greg Funk. Zach Nolan was third. neVlls
