CMA Bounty Hunter MX Series Round 2: Santa Maria Fairgrounds , Rusty. •• Wasn t! STORY AND PHOTOS BY EDDIE G RAVELINE/WWW.MOTOPRESS.NET SANTA MARIA, CA, JUNE 14 or the past several years, the CMA Bounty Hunter MX Series has drawn some of the best motocross talent from California and other western states. Pros and Amateurs alike have turned out to enjoy the many unique qualities the series has to offer. For Pros, the purse money is great, and the tracks are a good challenge; Amateurs enjoy racing in stadiums and fairgrounds in front of large crowds - something that your average C-class rider doesn't get to do every day. The first round in Salinas indicated that 2003 would follow in 2002's successful footsteps, but round two in Santa Maria was a mind-bender. Maybe the beautiful, 70-degree weather played a part, but the rider and spectator turnout was monumental. The gates were full, and what was really impressive was the fact that the grandstands, which usually house rodeo fans, were packed with anxious moto fanatics. They would not leave disappointed. As thrilling as it was for all of the Amateur riders to compete in such a dynamic venue, the real focus of the evening was the Pro action. Riders competed in two-moto, size-specific classes as well as the Bounty Hunter main event at the end of the night. Things got rolling with the 125cc Pro class, where a good three-way battle for the win took place. Scott Davis, a longtime veteran of the Supercross and National series, led the charge, but he had pressure in both races. The first time out, it was fellow Northern California native Vincent Blair who gave him fits. Blair was riding the F wheels off of his YZ, but Davis had things under control on his Suzuki. Billy Jurevich stepped up in the second race and forced Davis to ride flawlessly. After a few years of Arenacross experience, Jurevich found the tight and technical track to his liking. It was all that Davis could do to hold him off until the checkers came out. By winning both motos, Davis guaranteed himself a spot in the main event. The 250cc Pro class had an even larger turnout and would prove to be the source of most of the main-event talent. Rusty Holland was, in a word, unstoppable in both motos. He was in the lead by the end of the first lap in both races and, despite early pressure from Four-Stroke National star Nathan Woods, pulled sizeable gaps on his competition. In the heat races, he was the only rider to quad a stepon/step-off rhythm section, which sent him soaring. Woods held on for second in both heats, but Holland looked like the man to beat going into the final race. Taking a page from the speedway racing book, the Bounty Hunter races feature single-file starts, with the riders seeded by their qualifying results: the slowest guys in front, the fastest in the back. As usual, Holland took the very last spot on the grid, a full straightaway behind the first guy. When the green flag fell to start the race, Capitola's Dennis Stapleton took the early lead aboard a Honda CRF450R. Most of the field got bunched up for the first couple of laps and allowed the relatively unknown rider to pull several bikelengths on second place. Perhaps learning from past experience, Holland wasted no time banging his way toward the front. On the third lap, he took second place by delivering a full-on Arenacross/WWF-style block-pass to Putting Rusty Holland all the way In the back for the start of the main event couldn't keep him out of the winners' circle at round two of the CMA Bounty Hunter MX Series. Zac Baxter. He turned his attention to reeling in Stapleton, but it proved to be even easier than he had planned. On the fifth lap, Stapleton raised his arm and pulled off to the side of the track, surrendering the lead to Hoiland. It appeared that his exhaust system had come completely loose, and he wasn't unable to re-join the action. For five laps or so, it looked like Rusty would have it easy, but Daniel Blair had his own ideas. Daniel moved into second and got right on the rear fender of Holland's Honda. For a couple of laps, you could have thrown a blanket over the two of them in the corner. Daniel was making up time in a few of the sections, but Holland would get it back in others. Holland's Clawson Motorsports CRF450R was especially impress'ive on the start straight, where he would gain a few bikelengths each lap. Just when it seemed like the Honda rider had depleted his strength and would succumb to the Yamaha pilot, Daniel seemed to hit the same wall. They settled back into their positions, and Holland took the checkered flag by less than two seconds. Daniel was followed in by Jurevich, Davis and Jeff Pestana.
