CMC Pac West Nationals Round 5: Washougal Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT (Below) Adam Metzler (339) continued his win streak in the 125cc Intermediate class with the overall win in Washougal, Washington. WASHOUGAL, WA, JUNE 28 \Y7amaha-mounted Ryan Huffman IJ continued to steamroll the competition in the Professional classes at round five of the 18th annual CMC Pac West Nationals, held at Washougal Motocross Park. The rider from Roseburg. Oregon, won the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, joining Washington's Dan Moore in the Pro-class winners' circle. Moore also continued his current reign of terror in the Northwest, capturing wins in the Over 25 and Over 30 Pro classes. Moore, riding Yamaha and Suzuki machinery, has been impressive thus far in all five rounds, scoring nine overall wins in the Over 25 and Over 30 Pro classes. On this day, Moore won all four of his motos in the two classes and also finished second overall to Huffman in the 125cc Pro class. H uffma n won every moto he entered, leading Moore and Montana's Cameron Weaver into the top three in the 125cc class. Californian Josh Cavanaugh and Washington's Paul Conner trailed Huffman in 250cc action. Washington's Josh Hill has also been unstoppable lately. Only a single DNF in the prior four rounds has kept the diminutive speedster from winning every moto. On this day, Hill won both Supermini motos, but, much like at the previous round in Madras, Oregon, Hill encountered problems in the second aocc (12-13) moto and went 1-23 on the day. Two Evergreen State riders have been the dominant forces in the 60cc ranks. Landon Currier and Tevin Tapia have swapped moto and overall wins throughout the series. Currier, who hails from Brush Prairie, scored an overall win in the 60cc Open class, while Tapia won the 60cc (9- 11) class by virtue of his secondmoto win. Currier went 1-2 to finish second, ahead of Austin Rose. The two would meet again on 80cc machinery. The outcome was in Suzuki-mounted Tapia's favor, with a 1-1 tally; he was trailed by Currier (2-2) and Idaho's Cody Conner (4-3). The Intermediate ranks have produced some of the fiercest competition during the series thus far. Oregon's Adam Metzler has been among the top contenders in the 125cc Inter- mediate class and has won nearly every moto. On this day, the rider from Gaston won both motos going away. Oregon's Ryan Huege finished second overall to Metzler via 3-2 finishes, ahead of KTM rider Tony Boughten. Huege, though, was impressive in his rout of the 250cc Intermediate class. The Honda rider won both motos, while Metzler and Miles Warren placed second to the rider from Yamhill. After Metzler finished 21st in moto two, Warren netted second overall, followed by Trent Jesmer (5-4), Mark Bunker (4-5) and Oregon's Ryan Thompson (10-3). The first of the Professional classes was the 125cc Pro class. Huffman darted to the head of the field, followed by fellow Yamaha YZF250 rider Moore and Travis Murphy. Huffman would not be denied a win, finishing ahead of fellow former AMA National number holder Moore. Murphy, Bryan Clevenger and Weaver filled out the top five at moto's end. Moto two was much the same: Huffman grabbed the lead and remained there to the finish. Brett Boehm ran second for a portion of the race before yielding to both Moore and Weaver. Boehm would eventually drop several more positions, as Conner and Murphy relegated the Yamaha rider to an eventual sixth-place finish. Overall, Huffman (1- 1) led the way, trailed by Moore (2-2), Weaver (5-3), Murphy (3-5) and Conner (6-4). Huffman was equally impressive in the 250cc ranks. California's Cavanaugh was one of the few riders all day long to lead Huffman, but Huffman came back strong on the second lap to overtake Cavanaugh and won again. Conner made a move to net second in the opening moto, while Cavanaugh clung to third, ahead of Moore, Jason Matthews and rookie Pro Keith Ford. Cavanaugh was again Huffman's closest competition and finished a respectable second in moto two, although the moto was all Huffman's, and he scored the overall with his 1-1 tally, leading Cavanaugh (3-2), Conner (2-4) and the Kawasaki-mounted Ford (6-3). Ford's thirdplace moto-two finish was an impressive one for the former Intermediateclass standout. Rounding out the top five overall was Matthews (5-5). Honda-mounted Travis Farmer has enjoyed dominance in the 250cc Junior class thus far in the series, including a double-moto win on this day. Farmer had tough competition, in the form of Californian Mike Hodges and Washington's Kory Huffman. Neither, though, could put the stops on Farmer. Hodges placed second with 3-2 finishes, while Kory, who finished second to Farmer in moto one, backed up that performance with a third-place finish in moto two. eN 80 (14-16): I.
