Chris "Krash" Kerr finished in third, ahead of Polish National rider Bart Bardecki, who, like Kerr, finished his night with an inopportune midrace spill. In the year's third installment of the Elimination Challenge Scratch Series, Yarrow just barely survived the opening heat, transferring on oniy after Kerr failed to hoid the fourth and final transfer spot. Yarrow then went on through the ensuing heats to secure a place in the August 22 final with a two· lap victory over former Class C f1at·tracker Chad Felicia. In one of the most entertaining rides of the evening, Brian Leventon led the Division Two main event for nearly four laps before unex· pectedly falling in the final turn just shy of the white Aag, giving the lead to Mark Thomas, who in tum gave the win away to David Fonts. It was Fonts' second Division Two win in a row. and his third of the season. Results SCR; I. Bobby Hedden (GM): 2. Bart Bast (Ja......): 3. Chris Kerr (Jaw): 4. Bart 6llrdecki (OM). HOCP: 1. PINEVILLE, MO, JUNE 28 It's not often one can go to motocross races and watch the little guys on 50s and 65s put on the best shows, but at round three of the Sugar Creek Championship Series, that's exactly what happened. The first of the Pee Wee motos featured a combined field of 4- to 6-year-olds as well as the 7- to g-year-olds. KTM-mounted Aaron Williams got off to a great start, followed closely by local fast kid Michael Wright. Kolton Worley and Dayton Winn gave chase as they completed the first of three laps, Wright quickly used an outside line to make the pass for the lead and never looked back, steering his Polini to the winners' circle with a comfortable lead. Rounding out the younger class were the Dakotas - not North and South, but Dakota Perry and Dakota Winn. In the elder division of youngsters, KTM rider Jacob Leader finished runner-up to the other Winn, Dayton. The second moto looked much like the first, as Wright and Worley led the combined classes, Wright quickly pulled out to a comfortabie 25-second lead, leaving the battling behind him. Wright won, foliowed by Perry and Dakota Winn again. Leader won the second mota for his age group, as well as the overall. The battle of the night came early, in the first 65cc (9-11) moto. Ashton Fitzgibbon set the mood by pushing feliow KTM rider Corby Shumate out of the way in the second corner and taking the lead. Ryan Fitzgibbon chased his younger brother Ashton for most of the first lap until Shumate used the horsepower of his Langston-modified KTM 65 to make a pass and set out after Ashton. Then, on an uphill section. Ashton went down, giving Shumate the lead. Ryan took this opportunity to chase Shumate and study his lines. However, on the last lap, his younger brother got by, but there was no time for him to catch the leader, Shumate. That's how they would finish, with Alex Puttkammer taking a well-earned fourth. in the second moto, Ashton took the lead, c10seiy followed by Shumate and Ryan. The lead trio set a torrid pace no other 65cc rider could match. Ashton maintained his lead and took the moto win, ahead of Shumate. In the first 65cc Open moto, Ashton took the early lead, holding off a hard-charging Shumate. Finishing lap one, Ashton inadvertently overjumped a small double and ran slightly off the track, handing Shumate the lead. Shumate rode his heart out and won the moto, chased home by Ashton and Ryan. Ashton and Shumate dueled again in moto two, but Ashton made no mistakes and held on for the win, ahead of Shumate and Ryan. Puttkammer put his Suzuki into fourth in both motos. Nick Blood swept both 250cc Novice motos, and Yamaha-mounted Blake Gregory JULY Results 50 OPEN: J. Kolton Worley (KTM); 2. Michllel Wright (Pol): ]. Craig Brllnnan (KTM). 50 BEG: 1. Amazingly, in late June, the heavens finally cleared, and the 2003 Can-Am Speedway Championship at St. Alex Speedway in St.-Alexis-des-Monts, Quebec, was run under perfect conditions. The event was round two of the Northeast Speedway Racing Association's East Coast Speedway Series, and the good weather was a welcome sight after round one in North Carolina was cut short due to rain. The Can-Am Championship attracted a top-quality field of riders that included fomner U.S. Speedway Champion Kelly Moran, 2003 Under-21 contender Kyle Legault, New York top gun Craig Estelle, and fomner indoor ICE champ and crowd favorite Nick Fafard. While the competitors were top·notch, the most impressive aspect of the event was the knowledgeable and passionate crowd; paid attendance was well over 1200, thanks to the efforts of track owner Michel LeMay. The St, Alex track is a compact bullring with tight corners, and early heat action saw: a number of riders experiencing difficulties adapting to the technical nature of the strip. Fafard put his years riding on hockey rinks on the indoor ICE circuit to good use and emerged as the points leader heading into the main, foliowed by Estelie, Legault and Jeremy Parsons. Although Moran has so far raced well on the East Coast in his comeback, at St. Aiex he apparently disliked the surface and was never in contention to make the main. The Division One main was an all-star affair, with the crowd imploring local boy Fafard to deliver the win. A first-turn fali by Kyle Legault put him on the 10-yard line for the restart, with Estelle grabbing the hoieshot. Fafard was in hot pursuit, desperately seeking drive only inches off Estelie's rear wheel. At the checkered Aag, it was Estelie, Fafard and Legault, with Parsons falling in the late going. Division Two action was highlighted by the rising stars of East Coast speedway, Chip Lengle and Mikey Buman, who both met a determined foe in Canada's "Big John" Perry. In the Division Two main event, Lengle hooked up wildly at the start, aliowing Perry to nail the holeshot. Lengle and Buman pressured Perry intensely, but Big John's Aat-track technique through the turns shut off the inside line. At the flag, it was Perry, Lengle, Buman and Quebec's Jacques Gagner. By FAT BILLY BREMEN, GA, JUNE 28 The Moto-Madness Series marches on, and round 11 was a winner_ The 229 riders who signed up came ready for the best in Georgia motocross, and no one was disappointed. The track crew had the racing surface in great shape, as always, even though Kyle Kelly isn't on the equipment, due to an injury. The 50cc (7-8) event was the property of Cobra rider Wil Castleberry. KTM rider Hayden Richardson took second-spot honors. Austin Elder came back from vacation to serve f'!otice with a solid tl1ird·place finish. . The 50cc Shaft contest was a hard-fought event. Coleman Martin won both motos. Travis Norton kept Martin honest with a solid run for second. Colton Ford used his strong ride to take the third podium spot, The good news was that the riders finished strong, and no parents were lost while running around trying to help. One young rider who is going places is Jase Lewis. He started racing at Bremen and will put on a show this year at Loretta Lynn's, for sure. Lewis took his Freewheeling/LSD Racing Honda to two wins on this evening. The 125cc B class was the first to fall to Lewis, Kawasaki jockey Mason Sealock took the second podium spot, ahead of Yamahamounted Allen White. The 125cc C division was dominated by Bobby Scogin, another Freewheeling rider, who won the last moto. but Yamaha-mounted Mick Bailey kept Scogin honest with a strong second-place overall finish. Clayton Henderson, another regular winner, was held to third place by bad starts, but Henderson got a lot of practice at passing the field. The Youth division was another Jase Lewis benefit. Henderson finally got a good start on his Honda in the second moto to score second overall. Suzuki pilot Taylor Johnson was the man in the last podium spot on this evening. One of the best races of the event was the 250cc Beginner class. Brandon Anderson put his Yamaha in the first overall spot. Kawasaki man Kris Lemaster ran a strong race in the first moto for second and placed fifth in the second mota, garnering second overall. The reai story was about the third-place finisher, Yamaha rider David Seals, who had a long evening: Seals took a sky/ground/sky/ground soil sample that was alarming. Nevertheless, he got up and finished seventh in the first moto. In the second mota, Seals made sure everyone knew he was there by winning with a flawless ride. Overall, a great night of racing was had by all. Big gates for most classes kept the large crowd of spectators captivated, and everyone had a great time. Results 50 SHAFT: 1. Coleman Martin (Yam): 2. Faribault County Fairgrounds Paul Mauls the Moms By DAN BROTEN St. Alex Speedway: New Yorker Craig Estelle (51) continues to be the road warrior of East Coast speedway, winning the second round of the Can-Am Championship in Quebec. n e _ s FARIBAULT, MN, JUNE 28 The Sideways Promotions crew put on a pitbike race for the moms during the break at the Faribault, Minnesota. short-track races. As the 10 moms lined up for the start, everyone was wondering who would be the fastest. Brenda Paul took the early lead and hung on for the win on a PW50 that's nomnally ridden by Rochelle Paul in the Micro classes. Following Paul were Brenda Letendre and Lissa Golden. Due to its popularity, it looks like this event might be added to oth~r race meets. Promoters Candy and Darren Ray, along with Ken Rynda, formed Sideways Promotions last year and put on some very successful race meets at Faribault and Willmar. They have enough staff to provide corner flagmen, announcers, a starter, a gatekeeper, and workers to handle sign-up and entry fees. For this race, they even brought in a taco stand for the people in the pit area. Once Dave Solnitzky of Team 81 did the taste-testing, the rest of the pit workers indulged in some fine racetrack cuisine.
