"NOrH". PIN" With recent heavy rains in Minnesota, the track was soaked. The tractor pulling the wheel packer ran into trouble and was stuck in turn two. After blading and wheel-packing, the track was ready to go, and as the day went on, the track turned into a dusty, dry, slick, rough course that did not groove up very well. Many riders were trying to reel in their bikes quickly after running too hot into the comers. There were many falls but no serious injuries. Even with the delayed start, the race program ran quickly and smoothly for the 110 entrants on hand. The Rotax-powered bikes of veteran riders Billy Hoffmeister and Eric Brouhard proved to be overwhelming in the Open Pro class. The framed 6005 were getting much more traction than the Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha of Kevin Anderson, Troy Johnson and Willie Broten, who followed in that order. Old-hand rider Hoffmeister showed that he can still get around a short track quickly and looked very smooth on the rough, slippery track, using a lot of throttle control to find the traction. Dark clouds rolled in at the end of the day, spoiling the Over 50 Masters raee, whieh fin· ished in the rain, with Larry Sparks taking the checkers. The 505cc Pro class was canceled due to the showers. Double-event winners included Cole Anderson, Jonathan Ziesmer. Ed Hampe, Kevin Anderson and Darick Pearson. With the season nearing the halfway mark, the points battles are starting to heat up. With no races scheduled until July 12. some of the riders are headed to the Amateur Grand Nationals at Springfield to test their skills and riding abilities against the nation's best riders. By BRANOI SHELBY Tune in for LIVE INTERNET COVERAGE via Cycle News Online's "VIRTUAL GRANDSTAND" from the TAFT, CA, JUNE 28 Fifteen-year-old Amateur Kyle Griffith took the Pro· Am race on Saturday at the Franklin Field Sports Arena. After a long day of racing in Mammoth, California, this dedicated rider flew out to the Taft Arenacross Summer Series just in time to join in the action. Tulare rider Chad Vejar took the holeshot and led the race for 1 I laps. Coming out of the gates, Griffith was positioned in sixth, just behind fellow Taft riders Kyle Jones and Zak Crabb. However, he wouldn't stay there for long. Griffith, who had no prior experience on the newly remodeled track. took to it like a Pro, eagerly making his way to the front of the pack. By lap 16, Griffith had made his way to the seeond position, trailing Vejar by seconds. Jones had also moved up, pulling in right behind his teammate. By lap 17, Griffith had moved his Honda to the front, pushing it to the max. Vejar fell to second, while Jones remained in the third spot. Vejar battled it out for the last three laps, trying to regain the lead, but, due a bit of lapped traffic and Griffith's determination, Vejar was unable to suc· ceed. Griffith took the 20-lap Pro-Am, with Vejar in second and Jones a close third.
