CMC Pac West Nationals Round 6: Washougal Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, JUNE 29 II ormer AMA National number 97, IY Dan Moore, made the trek from Yakima, Washington, payoff with a pair of overall Pro-class wins at round six of the 18th annual CMC Pac West Nationals, held at Washougal Motocross Park. Riding a pair of Suzukis, Moore won the Over 25 and Over 30 Pro classes and also finished second, behind Ryan Huffman, in the 125cc Pro class. Huffman was equally impressive:' Riding two Yamahas, Huffman carded overall wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, despite pressure from Moore in the 125cc class and from Oregon's Mike Corder in the 250cc Pro class. The Honda CRF450Rmounted Corder, who was making his series debut, trailed Huffman in both motos to finish second, ahead of Californian Josh Cavanaugh. The first of Moore's two overall wins on the day came in the Over 30 Pro class. Moore faced several former AMA National riders, including Don Bisceglia, Darryl Zumstein and Mike Hamness, but that didn't deter him from manhandling both motos. Bisceglia, the only rider thus far in the series to finish ahead of Moore, ran second to Moore in both motos, followed by Hamness (3-3), Zumstein (5-4), Scott Sherrell (4-5) and J.R. MeusIing (6-6). A nearly identical field of riders was looking to put the stops on Moore in the Over 25 Pro class. In the end, though, Moore did just as he had earlier, winning both motos. Fellow Suzuki rider Bisceglia (3-2) was again relegated to the number-two spot, trailed by Jason Matthews (2-3), Sherrell (6-4) and Travis Gage (4-7). For the fourth time in six rounds, Washington's Joshua Hill swept the (Above) Dan Moore topped the Over 25 and Over 30 Pro classes at round six of the 18th annual CMC Pac West Nationals. (Above right) Josh Hill dominated the 80cc (12-13) and Supermini classes at Washougal Motocross Park. Supermini and 85cc (12-13) classes. While Hill did demolish the competition in the two classes, there were several other top performers chasing him. Fellow Washingtonian Mikey Schmeck and Idaho's Matt DeAtley were the riders who stuck closest to Hill, finishing 2-2 and 3-3, respectiveIy, in the 24-rider field. In the adjoined 85cc (14-16) class, Canada's Brady Sheren won the overall. In fact, the Kawasaki jockey showed some brilliant riding, as did Suzuki's Sam DeAtley. The two riders split moto wins in the class, but the overall win went Sheren's way by virtue of his second-moto victory. Another Idahoan, Kyle Evans (3-3), finished third overall, followed by Aaron McClinton (4-4) and Randall Walt (6-5). Hill and Sheren met again in the 37 -rider Supermini class. Hill had the upper hand in both motos, leaving the Canadian with second overall. Suzuki riders Sam and Tevin Tapia swapped third-place finishes; Sam's 4-3 placings netted the rider from Lewiston, Idaho, third overall. Tapia (3-5) and Schmeck (5-4) rounded out the top five overall. Morgan Burger scored a win in the 85cc (7-11) class, but the Idaho rider's win didn't come without pressure from two of the class' top performers, Tapia and Landon Currier. While both have been impressive so far in the series, it was Burger who scored the moto-one victory, ahead of Currier, Tapia and Oregon's Gared Steinke. Tapia took control of moto two and held off challenges from Burger to score the moto win, although a third-place first-moto finish thwarted Tapia's chances of an overall win. Burger (1-2) won overall, with Tapia (3-1), Currier (2-3), Steinke (4-4) and Cody Conner (5-5) trailing. Neither Tapia's nor Currier's day was a wash, though, as Suzuki rider Tapia prevailed in the 65cc (9- 11) class and Currier won the competitive 65cc Open class. The KTM rider from Brush Prairie, Washington, won both 65cc Open motos. Fellow KTM riders Taylor Monroe and Austin Rose placed second and third overall. Tapia's 65cc win came much easier, as Currier was hammered by mechanical problems (after leading moto two), and Tapia won both motos. Huffman has given some incredible performances throughout the six rounds of the Pac West Series, and, on what would be considered his home track, he showed the competition in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes some more. Even AMA National and Supercross regular Corder couldn't put a stop to Huffman's domination of the 250cc class, and Corder finished second on the day. One rider with little Washougal experience, Cavanaugh, picked up the third-overall money after swapping third-place finishes with second-year Pro J.R. Vielle, who netted fourth overall with his 3-4 score. Mathews (5-5) and rookie Pro Bob Melloy (7 -7) followed. eN 65 (9-11): 1. Tevin Tapia (Suz): 2. Austin Rose (KTM): 3. Thomas Nichols (KTM): 4.
