CMA Bounty Hunter MX Series Round 3: santa Maria Fairgrounds Showtime Motorsports Park: Jesse Freeman won the 85cc (7-11) class at round nine of the fifth annual Florida Motocross Series, in Waldo. Turf War By EDDIE GRAVEUNE Florida Motocross Series Round 9: Showtime Motorsports Park Freeman, Free and Clear By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON WALDO. FL, JUNE 15 Suzuki rider Jesse Freeman seems to be the one to beat in the 85cc (7- 11) class as the Florida Motocross Series enters the home stretch. Freeman has opened up a sizable points lead on his nearest competitors, and if he keeps this up, no one is going to catch him. One could say at this point that he will probably be the 85cc (7 - J 1) series champion • but things can always change. In the first 85cc (7-11) moto, Derek Hall grabbed the holeshot. ahead of Freeman. Following the two were Kenneth Hill, Tyler Dupre, Mikey Desane and Kyie Combee. Freeman qUickly moved into the lead by the end of lap one. Hill tried playing catch-up halfway through the race and closed to within three seconds of Hall. The three each finished about that far apart from one another. Combee was the rider on the move, as he and Desane passed Dupre. The three stayed close, each waiting for the others to make a mistake. Combee moved by Desane for fourth, where he would stay. Desane, on the other hand, was repassed by Dupre for the fifth spot. Freeman absconded with the second-moto holeshot. Hill was ahead of Hall, and the two waged a race-long battle. Dupre and Eddie Clark were fourth and fifth. Desane and Combee were right there in sixth and seventh, but they would be fourth and fifth by lap two. In the end. Combee edged out Desane for the fourth position. Up front, Freeman motored away with the win. Hall finally left the gas on a little longer and went around the outside of Hill in the first tum to finish in the runner-up spot. The 85cc Beginner class rode at the same time, and it was Tony Carriero who took the first·moto win. Alex Spade came up from the sixth position to make a last-lap pass on Zach Spagnuolo for second. Trevor Paschal started second but slipped to fourth at the finish, and Beau Durrua rounded out the top five. In the second moto. Carriero ran away with the win. There was a race-long battle for the second position, among four riders. Spagnuolo edged out the rest for second at the end, and Chappy Herwick made a last-lap pass for third, sending Paschal to fourth. Chris Fischetti got fifth. The 50cc (4-6) class was the Dalton Myers show, as this little Cobra speedster ran away with the first moto. Hunter Baker ran second for most of the race until bike problems caused a DNF. This moved the battle for third up to the battle for second, between Jarek 60 JULY 23.2003' eye I e Balkovic and Zach Duchaine. The two riders switched places by the checkered fiag. Matthew Burkeen finished fourth. and Tyler Oliver beat out Christopher Salter for fifth. Myers took a convincing win in moto two, and Duchaine ran second the entire moto. Balkovic got the holeshot but dropped back to third quickly. Balkovic dropped back to fifth, where he finished. Burkeen moved into third. and Baker closed in during the closing laps for fourth. Dean Dyess took four moto wins in the 125cc B and Youth (12-15) classes. This Suzuki speedster got out front and took off like a yellow hurricane. In the first B moto, Blake Koch got the holeshot. Kyle Levalley. Brandon Abell, Dyess and Waylon Maloy followed. Koch pulled out a few bikelengths as the next three stayed close. By lap two, Dyess made his move on not one rider but two, and now he was second and gaining on Koch quickiy. Dyess held it on around the outside of turn one and took the lead around the halfway mark, never looking back. Koch dropped back in the pack, and three riders moved up to battle for second. Levalley and Abell were going at it, and D.C. Clark moved in on the two. Clark had started seventh and was pushing hard, and he managed to get third, ahead of Abell, but came up just short of passing Levalley. Maloy finished a distant fifth. Koch got the holeshot in moto two, ahead of Dyess. Abell, Matthew Pedrero and Clark. Koch ran off the track on lap one, dropping back to third, as Clark made the pass on Pedrero. Dyess was in front, where he stayed. Abell was second until the last lap, when a spill cost him a secure second. Clark was pushing again and passed Koch for second partway through the last lap. Koch didn't give up and put a good block-pass on Clark, with a little contact, at the next-to-Iast comer. Abell finished fourth, and Casey Gulick held off Camden Cruz for fifth. Everyone who attended in 2002 had fond memories of a nice facility, an innovative track and awesome dirt. In fact, last year's trip was so successful that they scheduled a two-day doubleheader for this summer, plus a return trip in the fall. Sunday, June 15. was the second and final day. In contrast to Saturday, there wasn't a Bounty Hunter main scheduled, but the Pro classes were still paying, and it counted as a separate round for all of the Amateur title hopefuls. Sunday dawned with beautiful weather, just like the day before. The entry iists were a mile long, just like the day before. The track was also in wonderful condition, so there was no reason to expect anything but another great day. For those unfamiliar with the series, the Bounty Hunter schedule is unique in that there is usually only one race (or, in this case, one race weekend) per month, and they are all staged in different parts of the state. Because the series is so prestigious in Central California, a lot of racers follow the entire series. What you end up with is riders from the southern, northern, central and coastal parts of the state who wouldn't normally race against each other, all competing for the same titles. The 85cc Beginner class was dominated by "local" riders from the coastal area around Santa Maria. Templeton's fastest female, Jessy Arthurs, came out swinging and took the first moto, over Robbie Boggs and Tyler Boeddeker, both from nearby Paso Robles. Boggs proved to be a quick study, though, and claimed the second victory. Arthurs fell to third in the second race, behind Boeddeker, but she still had enough for second overall. Jordan Coli ins of Paso Robles and Michael Furlin of Pismo Beach completed the coastal sweep of the top five_ Moving up to the 85cc Novice division, things got a little more geographically diverse. Trevor Allred and Michael Flores engaged in a spirited battle for the overall victory. Flores, who came all the way from Stockton, California, struck first and won the opening moto. Maybe Alired benefited from sleeping in his own bed the night before. because he edged Flores to win the second moto and the overall. Central California made a comeback in the upper Mini divisions. Clovis' Nicolas Baker and Madera's Dustin Pipes teamed up to deci· mate the competition in the 85cc Intermediate, Supermini and X classes. Baker won every moto he entered aboard his Clawson Motorsports-supported Yamahas, but Pipes was never that far behind. They proved to be the perfect one-two punch in every class they entered. The turf war continued with the big-bike classes. The 125cc riders seemed to live and die based on the distance they lived from the ocean. Greg Karmann rode a YZ to the firstmoto win in the 125cc Intermediate class. He looked poised to repeat in the second race, but an untimely DNF spoiled any chance of that. At that point, the door was open for Anthony Houser, who had finished second in the first mota and was looking solid in the sec· ond. Give the guy credit for seizing the opportunity and walking away with top honors in one of the most competitive classes in motocross. Jake Osborne slipped into second place with a 3-2 performance. After two other guys scored DNFs in the second moto, Karmann salvaged third overall. Karmann put a storybook ending on his day by sweeping both 125cc Youth motos. The brother act of Larry and Ronnie Vasquez proved to be effective: They split second- and third-place finishes. with Larry getting the nod for second. Atascadero native Weston Arthurs had a good day. He won both 250cc Novice motos, over Ronnie, and topped it off with the Sportsman X title. The top Pro of the day was Hollister's Billy Jurevich, who came out on top of a heated three-way duei in the 250cc Pro class. It looked like Nor-Cal's Daniel Blair might claim the victory after winning moto one, but he fell to fourth in the final. Jurevich took it with a Santa Maria Fairgrounds: James Culbertson had a very successful day, going undefeated in the 65cc Novice and X classes at round three of the CMA Bounty Hunter MX Series, in Santa Maria, California.
