Watts opted to single the rhythm section, while Dubin opted to jump through them. This maneuver pulled Dubin directly up to Watts" back fender as the two entered the next corner. Watts protected her inside line as Dubin railed around the outside, shooting past the Novice rider and into the lead. Dubin quickly pulled ahead, securing her overall win in the Women's Beginner class with a 2-1 tally. Stewart (1-2) was second. Harmatiuk Survive Speedway "Destruction Derby" Victorville Motocross Complex By Dubin Dominates VMC COSTA MESA, CA. JUNE 14 It was Father's Day Night, Wacky Hair Night, and a full moon. Put them all together and it was one strange night. The riders had a whole lot of trouble keeping the greasy side down, along with both wheels. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, and when all the dust had set- By JASON DUBIN VICTORVILLE, CA, JUNE 14 As lhe sun set on the first round of the VMC Summer Nights Series, everyone collectively breathed a sigh of relief, as there would be no more racing in 100-degree heat. It is during this temperature change that those who can adapt usually prevail. This became apparent when 15-year-old Amateur motocross rookie Heather Dubin took the top honors in the Women's Beginner class on Saturday night. When the gate fell for the first combined 250cc Beginner/Women's Beginner and Novice moto, Dubin shot out of the gate first. Dubin made a small bobble in the sandy first turn, and the lone Novice rider, Katie Watts, and Beginner rider Nikki Stewart both slipped by. Following closely were Ainslie Cortines, Samantha Steffan and Janis Welsh. As the leaders entered the long rhythm section after the finish, Dubin took the lead of the Beginner class by outjumping Stewart. Dubin then set her sights on Watts. Stewart, however, had other plans. As the race wore on. Dubin would pull Stewart through the rhythm section, while Stewart would pull Dubin on lhe nat back section of the track. On the last lap, Watts was a couple of seconds ahead of Dubin and Stewart. Rounding the final corner, Stewart pulled alongside Dubin and made the pass for the first-moto win by half a bikelength. When the gate dropped for the muchanticipated second moto, Watts absconded with the holeshot, over Stewart, Cortines, Welsh and Dubin. Then Dubin held the throttle pinned off of the huge 120-foot tabletop to outjump Stewart once again and set her sights on Watts. Dubin, however, kept Watts honest as the duo pulled a comfortable lead over ELAINE JONES tied, it was "Flyin' Mike" Faria, transferring from the last-chance qualifier, who had won the Scratch main and Shaun Harmatiuk who took the Handicap win. The first Scratch semi had" Awesome" Scott Brant on the pole, with Faria in two and Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell and "Gorgecus· Gary Hicks in three and four. Brant and McConnell went out on top. Faria and Hicks battled for third, hoping to find an opening up front to pick up a transfer spot, but both Brant and McConnell were riding the pole, and they finished one-two. Faria and Hicks headed to the LCQ. The second semi had Dukie Ermolenko on the pole, with "Fast" Ed Castro in two and Andy "The Enforcer" Northrop and Harmatiuk on the outside. Castro was asleep at the line when the tapes came up, but not so Ermolenko and Northrop, who went one-two in the quick four-Iapper. Castro and Harmatiuk had one more shot in the LCQ. The LCQ was over as soon as the tapes came up. Faria, out of three, outgated the field and was gone. The fifth slot in the Scratch main was his. In the main, McConnell drew the pole. Faria was in two, Ermolenko in three, Brant in four and· sporting bright orange. hair Northrop in five. Faria read the gate to perfection and went out on top. with McConnell working the low line in second. Two laps in, Ermolenko hooked up out of two and got airborne. Ermolenko's skills served him well: everyone walked away from what could've been a serious accident. The race was called, with Ermolenko credited for the red. Faria got the win, with McConnell second, followed by Brant. Northrop and Ermolenko. Harmatiuk and Justin Boyle lined up on the 20-yard line for the Handicap main. The 40 was crowded with Northrop, Schwartz, Ermolenko, McConnell and Castro. Brant was all alone on the 50. Harmatiuk got off first, but Boyle took over the front spot as they came around on lap two. He held on for three more laps and then parked it big-time in three and brought a good portion of the field to the ground as they laid their bikes down to keep from running over the youngster. They lined up single file for the three-lap sprint, with Harmatiuk in front. He held off a strong charge from Castro to take the win. Mike Fontaine and Scott McElroy went wire to wire in the bump-and-run Sidecar main. Joe Jones and Brandi McElroy held off a very strong charge from brothers Dan and Chris Jones for the second. The new team of Mark Adams and Jackie Bennett were fourth.
