SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 13 Teammates "Awesome" Scott Brant and "Fast" Ed Castro totally ruled the main events at the Orange Show in San Bernardino on Friday night. In a display of riding that had the spectators on their feet, Brant won the Scratch main. Not to be outdone, Castro came right back in the Handicap main and took a page out of Brant's book. winning in spectacular fashion. The first Scratch semi had Shaun Harmatiuk on the pole, with "Gorgeous" Gary Hicks in two, "Cowboy" Bobby Krips in three and Brant in four. The gate went to Hicks, but Harmatiuk had the lead as they came around on lap one. However, Brant was on the gas and out in the dirt, taking the long way around, and he took the lead on lap two and never looked back. Krips was working the low line, and that was good enough to get him a direct transfer to the main, along with Brant. Harmatiuk and Hicks were headed to the lastchance qualifier. In the second Scratch semi, the pole went to "Boogaloo" Bobby Schwartz. Billy Lyons was in two, with Dukie Ermolenko and Castro in three and four. It was gate and race to the veteran Schwartz, and Castro would transfer with him to the main. ErmoJenko and Lyons would get one more shot in the LCQ. Ermolenko got the gate in the LeQ and was gone, and he would be the last rider in the Scratch main. In the Scratch main, the pole went to Schwartz, with Brant and Castro in two and three, and Krips and Ermolenko on the outside. The gate and the lead went to Brant, with Schwartz off second. Castro and Ermolenko were out in the dirt. Ermolenko got the cheap thrill of the night when he hooked up big-time coming out of two and literally went airborne: The front wheel was in the air down most of the back straightaway before he could get the nose down. Castro was having better luck, and as the white flag came out, he managed to get inside of Schwartz and end up with second. In the Handicap contest, Lyons was the only rider on the zero-yard line. Harmatiuk was alone on the 20. Krips and Justin Boyle shared the 30, Ermolenko picked the best place to start on the 40. and Brant, Hicks and Castro loaded in on the 50. Lyons held the lead for one iap, but the Cowboy was on the move, and he took things in hand as they came around on lap two. He held on for two laps before he became sandwiched between Castro and Brant. who tried to pressure him, but held on to second. Castro. working the dirt, looked great while taking the checkered fiag. Rudy Laurer won the Support main. Keith Mullaily wa's second, with Scott Tidwell third. Support B was won by Dewayne Stark, topping Steve Dzaidus and Mike Boyle. In the Juniors contest, Jason Ramirez beat "Cowgiri" Tamara Krips and Dylan Stark. Results Results 50 (4·6) PRI: 1. Jordan Schultz; 2. Jesse SllncheI; 3. Tllylor Marin. 50 (4.6) FAC: I. CARSON CITY, NV, JUNE 13 While much of northern Nevada looked forward to a quiet Friday evening at home, area racers fixated on the impending return of an old tradition: Carson City's Friday night MX. The pits were packed even tighter than in the old days for this race, which served as round two of the MX West Summer Series. Nevada motocross has grown since the demise of the original Friday night races in the late 1990s, and the growth was apparent on this evening. Even the aura of superstition that comes with any race held on Friday the 13th didn't seem to harm the turnout. In the mid- to late '90s, the Carson Valley featured a number of talented 80cc riders, including a few names that may sound familiar today: Dustin Miller, Drake McElroy, Matt Buyten, Mike Mason and Nathan Tieamey all regularly battled it out in the Mini class at the original wave of Friday night races. Today's 80cc riders are also growing faster, thriving within the crowded Mini classes. On this Friday, Yamaha rider Ryan Eager and Honda-mounted Chris Lenard rode to the front, claiming wins in the aocc Intermediate and Supermini classes, respectively. Eager made a last-to-first charge in the first 80cc Intermediate moto and backed up his win with a second-place finish in the Superminis. Lenard took second in the Intermediate class but came back to take the top spot in the Supermini race. Both of these riders look big enough to make a jump to the 125cc class soon, and if they foilow the pattern of the most recent graduates from the 80cc Intermediates, they should be contenders in the 125cc Intermediate class very quickly. In fact, Wes Peebles, who deveioped some of his talents in the 80cc Intermediate division just a few years ago, is now one of the top riders in the 125cc Intermediate class. Peebles won the first round of the series in Fallon, and he continued his streak by claiming first aboard his Kawasaki again in Carson. Suzuki pilot Dean Wilcox claimed second. Nathan Tiearney again came out on top of the Pro classes, after battling Bobby Garrison and Kenny Lash. Possibly the most exciting race of the nlght was the first 12~cc Pro mota, in which Garrison held a fairly comfortable lead until the iast iap, when lapped traffic allowed Tiearney to close the gap. Tiearney edged underneath Garrison on the final straight, knifing out a scant few inches of racetrack to squeak past Garrison just feet before the flag. Garrison did. however, manage second on the night in the 125s. while Lash rode to a solid second overall in the 250s. The people at Nevada Motocross Develop· ment were able to negotiate the legal and financial minefield that has surrounded Champion Speedway's reopening. They have scheduled even more races for the rest of the summer, so hopes are high that Carson will again be a steady part of the local calendar. Mother Nature finally cooperated at the fourth round of the Friday Night Motocross Series, with pure blue skies and temperatures as cozy as your living room. Summer is here to stayI KTM rider Colton Greaves continues to become one of the most recognizable Pee Wee riders in the area. Now entering his third year of racing motocross, Greaves shows vast improvement every time his tires hit the racetrack. He is one of only a few Pee Wee riders who consistently hit the infield double with ease lap after lap. In the first Pee Wee mota, Greaves jumped out to an early lead, but he got a little overanxious as he entered the high-banked lefthander after the double and bit the dust. Greaves had trouble remounting and starting his orange two-stroke, so a charging Aaron Remter took over the lead on his Lem. Remter got on the gas, knowing Greaves was back on the seat and trying to catch him, but Remter now had a comfortabie lead. Remter pulled off the upset, over Greaves and the pack of 10 Pee Wee riders. A.J. Woiler placed third, and Devon Barrette and Ben Rowe rounded out the top five. Greaves, obviously disappointed, was seeking vengeance in the second moto. When the gate dropped, he pulled out to a nice iead. Remter kept Greaves in sight for most of the mota, but Greaves hit the infield double with ease and increased his lead. Greaves took the big win. ahead of Remter. Woller rode consistently for third in the mota and overall. Rowe beat out Barrette for fourth and fourth overall on his 5-4 taliy. Jacob Greatens scored a big win in the 85cc Senior class with back-to-back wins over hotshoe Tim Stephani. Greatens ied ail but one lap in both motos. Stephani took the holeshot in the second mota, but Greatens assumed the lead shortly after and scored the victory. Kawasaki rider Brian LudWig improves his results each week, and this time he took the overall win by conquering both motos in the 85cc Junior class. Ludwig was unstoppable, leading every lap of both motos and beating Yamaha rider Matt Opperman and Kawasaki jockey Ben Peterson. Though Peterson kept it dose in the first moto, a lapped rider got in the way, preventing him from completing his charge to take the point. Ludwig got the win, while Opperman (3-2) took second overall, beating out Peterson on the final lap. Peterson (2-3) was third overall. er: 4. Martm Cadalorll. 4-STRK: I. Eric Peters; 2. Bill Peters. Muhlenberg County Fairgrounds Greenville Good for Princeton Crew By BOBBY LEWIS GREENVILLE, KY, JUNE 13 The Kentucky Dirt Track Series returned to' Greenville for round five, but not to the familiar indoor arena. A sparse crowd of riders were on hand for the midweek fair event, and they were the first to tum laps on an all-new outside circuit. The new fifth-mile track features a banked clay surface with a tri-ovalshaped front straight. Riders willing to hang it out through this section were able to gain huge amounts of time. The Princeton crew of Jason Goodwin. Jeff Jones and Jake Lewis seemed to have it dialed in best.
