blows throughout the day in the c1ose'-fought Over 40 class. Barron's tie-breaking win over Farris in the final moto clinched the victory for Barron. Barron returned in the Over 35 division, where he earned runner-up honors, behind Keith Davis, who also won the Over 30 match. At the other end of the age spectrum, the 50cc (4-7) Beginner class, with its many lead changes, proved to be one of the day's most exciting contests. Hard-charging Hunter Foskey had his tum at the front in both motos, but. spills set him back to an eventual fourth overall. Meanwhile, Chandler Knight put together the winning] -2 s.core, ahead of Tucker Landreth's 4-1 performance. Tanner Foutch. son of track owner Kelly Foutch, was third overall. Both motos of 65cc (10- I I) competition had numerous lead changes. D.J. Losch and Cole McRae were occasional race leaders, but Hunter Landreth had the best control and won both motos. Losch recovered from mistakes and placed second, over Drew Baron and McRae. The Supermini class showcased several first-place contenders, but at the end of the day, Kirk's Cycles-backed Tyler Horne had dispatched all challengers and emerged with a perfect score. RT Cycle's Jonathan Foskey swapped the lead back and forth in a first· moto duel with Home. Home's last-lap efforts netted the moto win, over Jonathan, who had to settle for an eventual 2·2 score, ahead of Trea Miller. Kyle King grabbed the secondmoto lead and showed Horne the way around the track for several laps. A spill by King set him back to fourth and fourth overall. Sarge's Cycle-backed King returned to win the 125cc Schoolboy class. Miller came back to post a 1-1 tally in the 65cc (12-15) contest. Four of the top five finishers in the 125cc B division were from Alabama. including Kevin Primeau, who earned the top slot via his 1·2 score. Primeau also rode the 125cc Schoolboy class, finishing second overall. Results 50 BEG (4.7): 1 Chandler Kmghl (KTM): 2. Tocke' Landreth (KTM): 3. Tonner Foutch (KTM); 4. Gunstock Recreation Area Galvin Galvanized at Gunstock By MIKE GREEN GILFORD, NH, JUNE 7 The FIM/NAMU-sanctioned North American Vintage Observed Trials National Champion. ship returned to the Gunstock Recreation Area in New Hampshire for the third year. Gunstock is a popular ski resort in the winter, and the challenging natural terrain is perfect for trials competition. Almost 70 riders from the United States and Canada signed up for this year's event, and the cool drizzle that fell all afternoon was not enough to dampen everybody's enthusiasm. Veteran rider Wayne Galvin emerged as the top Expert rider after dropping just 27 marks on the 350cc Bultaco Sherpa T that he bought new in 1982. Dave Samuelman was just one mark behind in second, on his 1974 Yamaha TY250. His brother Mike, who won the event in 2002. was a further point adrift on his 1975 Yamaha TY250. "It was a great event," said Galvin, who had ridden in the NATC Nationals In Oregon and Washington prior to Gunstock. HI lost most of my points in the river sections: they were long and challenging. I didn't check my scores during the event and had no idea I was leading. This was my third year at Gunstock. and it's good to finally win one.' The Intermediate class was won by former AMA National Champion Jerry Young, on a 1979 350 Bultaco Sherpa T. Young traveied to Gunstock with former factory Triumph racer Eddie Fisher, who was racing in the road race at Gunstock the following day - the re-creation of the Laconia Classic that Fisher won in 1953. Young was unaware that the trials event was taking place. but he managed to borrow a bike and some riding gear just as the event started. Young dropped one mark on each of the three laps on a 1979 35Qcc Bultaco Sherpa T and finished two points ahead of New England Twin Shock champion John Beaupre, on his 1975 Yamaha TY175. Vern Merrihew III was third on a 1973 125 Montesa Cota, just Gunstock Recreation Area: Bill Manifold and Danny Allen ride through one of Gunstock's streams on their 200cc Fantic trials sidecar at the FIM/NAMU-sanctioned North American Vintage Observed Trials National Championship event in Gilford, New Hampshire, 80 JULY 9.2003' cue • e nevvs one mark behind Beaupre. Canadian Mike O'Reilly was making his second visit to Gunstock, and he finished just two marks behind Merrihew on his 1975 Yamaha 11'175. Vem Merrihew Jr. rode his 1974 Yamaha 11'250 to a fine win in the Novice class after dropping just four marks for the day. Leo O'Shea finished second on a J 975 J 75 Montesa Cota after losing six marks; Jacob Spencer lost 11 marks to finish third on a 1974 250 Montesa Cota. Canadians Yves Doyon and Doug Hunter made the long drive worthwhile by picking up a couple of wins. Doyon won the Vintage Ughtweight Intermediate class on his Triumph Tiger Cub, and Hunter won the Vintage Heavyweight Novice class on an immaculate Sammy Miller replica Ariel HT500. Englishman Bob Manifold and former Cemoto East salesman Bill Haas entertained the large crowd with their Fantic·powered tri· als sidecar. Haas' day ended prematurely when the outfit flicked him onto his back in the river, but 14-year-old Danny Alien was recruited as a late substitute, and Manifold managed to complete the three laps. JUNE 7 Kawasaki-mounted Brandon Kelly has been steadily inching his way toward the front of the pack in California Racing Club's 85cc Beginner ranks. On this night, it all came together for the RK Racing/MX Stands/661-backed Kelly at Los Angeles County Raceway, where he went 1- 1 for the class win. Garrett Morrison absconded with the open· ing-moto holeshot, ahead of Kelly, Chris Arroyo, Matthew Dion and the rest of the field. Kelly wasted little time making his way into the point position on the first circuit of the J.B. Memorial Track, and Arroyo dropped Morrison back to third a short time later. The moto was all Kelly's, as he put five seconds on Arroyo en route to the win. Morrison crossed the line for third, a safe distance ahead of Tylor Hemme and Justin Jones. Kelly railed around the first turn in moto two and into an immediate lead, with Hemme, Daniel Gard.iner, Morrison and Arroyo giving chase. Kelly put a couple of seconds on Hemme early in the moto, while Arroyo and Morrison went at it over third place, just a few seconds back. Kelly reeled off one flawless lap after another, and by the time the checkers waved, he had a comfortable 12-second lead over Hemme. Arroyo's third in the moto gave him second overall, topping the 4·2 score of Hemme and the 3-4 finishes of Morrison. In the first 250cc Beginner moto, Chris Cordos got an excellent start over Don McGranahan, Richard Kltbach and Tommy John. Chris Shipley and Jason Sanchez both overcame poor starts and worked their way up into second and third, respectively, with a little over a lap remaining. Coming out of the final tum on the final lap, Cordos went down, hand· ing the lead and the first·moto win to Shipley. Sanchez was a close second, ahead of Stephen Sandoval and Kitbach. Sanchez got the holeshot in moto two aboard his RM250, with Cordos and Johnny Martinez all over his back fender. Sanchez fell in a turn on lap two, holding up Cordos in the process. Martinez also went down a short time later, handing the lead over to Kitbach, who continued on to win the moto and claim third overall. Shipley was once again a victim of a bad start, but he slowly worked his way up into a close third-place finish, behind John, to sew up the overall for the evening. Results PfW YAM. BEG: I.
