Cyrus Canyon ORV Area Johnson & Ketcham Top Kernville Sidecars By DUKE EARUMART KERNVILLE, CA, JUNE 1 Chris Johnson and Les Ketcham teamed up on their EML-Honda sidecar to take the top honors in the Championship class at round two of the AMA Westem National Sidecar MJ( Series, held at the Cyrus Canyon ORV area in Kernville, California. The team certainly cap· tured the day, but it wasn't without a challenge. in the form of the hard-charging. EMLZabel· mounted Victor Palfreyman and Perry Melillo. as well as the reluctant Wasp Yamaha outfit of Allen and Bryan Wenzel. In moto one, Palfreyman f., Melillo and Johnson [, Ketcham charged for the first tum. with the Wenzel brothers just behind. The teams dived into the left· hand first turn. and with the left· handed Palfreyman [, Melillo rig and the right-handed outfits of Johnson [, Ketcham and the Wenzels, the crowd got to see the passengers either hanging it out or clamped around the driver, each passenger doing whatever it took to help their team gain momentum. A few moments later, there was an incident between Palfreyman [, Melillo and Johnson [, Ketcham that left Johnson/Ketcham wondering what happened. The Wenzels just barely escaped the melee. The incident was perhaps best summed up by Johnson, "Yeah, it was a racing deal. ..... Nevertheless, the team was not about to fold. Johnson [, Ketcham were sidelined for a lap, while the Wenzels chased Palfreyman f., Cyrus Canyon ORY Area: Victor Palfreyman and Perry Melillo won the first moto at round two of the AMA Western National Sidecar MX Series in Kernville, California, but they were no-shows for moto two, victims of leaking head gasket. Melillo, who showed no signs of slowing up on the rough Kernville track. leaping over every jump and throwing up giant roost from every left·hand comer. Johnson [, Ketcham finally re-joined the action, albeit with bent controls on their rig. However, Palfreyman f., Melillo took the win, the Wenzels placed second. and Johnson [, Ketcham took a well-deserved third, The start of moto two was calmer, as Palfreyman f., Melillo had gone missing, sidelined with a leaking head gasket on their EML·Zabel outfit. But the show must go on, and indeed it did, with Johnson [, Ketcham taking the early lead and the Wenzel brothers giving chase. One lap into the moto, the Wenzel brothers took over and showed the way brielly. Johnson [, Ketcham charged past on the next lap, showing the same determination as in the first moto. However, somewhere near the halfway mark. the Wenzels got past again. Their lead was short· lived, as Johnson f, Ketcham charged past the Wenzels again, taking over the lead just prior to the step-up jump leading into the carousel section of the Kernville track. It was a defining moment for Johnson f., Ketcham, as they then pulied away from the Wenzels and led the rest of the moto unchal· lenged - though the rough Kernville track provided enough of a chalienge all by itself, At the finish, it was Johnson f., Ketcham leading the Wenzel brothers to the checkered flag. securing the overall in the Championshjp class on the day, All in ali, it was a great day for sidecar motocross.
