CMC Pac West Nationals Round 2: Albany Motorsports Park Tiger Lacey (221) and Ryan Huffman (112) waged war throughout the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at round two of the 18th annual CMC Pac West Nationals. STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT AlBANY, OR, JUNE 8 amaha-supported Oregonians Tiger Lacey and Ryan Huffman clashed on several occasions at round two of the eight-round CMC Pac West Nationals, and, at the completion of the day's program at Albany Motorsports Park, it ended in a draw. At the previous round, Lacey dominated every moto; at this round, Lacey scored the overall 125cc Proclass win, while Huffman came out on top of the 250cc Pro class. The two Northwesterners used arenacrosslike tactics outdoors in what became a "bumpfest" for the top Pro payoff. Nearly a thousand riders from five western states were on hand for the event, which has long been among the elite series in the West. Lacey darted to the head of the field at the start of the first 125cc Pro moto, followed by Huffman and Dan Moore. Cole Siebler sneaked in behind the trio, while Billy Binckley and Ryan Terlecki ran in the top five on the opening lap. Things changed up front rather quickly, as Huffman outjumped Lacey to gain the point position at the completion of the first lap. Huffman, who suffered from severe arm pump at the opening round, vowed he'd come back strong the next day, and he did just that. Huffman held a slim advantage by jumping the massive "gap." Lacey decided that he, too, would have to make the jump in order to stay with his fellow Yamaha rider, and, on the next-tolast lap, he made a pass stick to grab the lead. While Huffman had one final shot at holding the lead, Lacey got the best of the rider from Roseburg and narrowly won. Huffman, Siebler, Moore, Terlecki and Alaska's Jerry Lymburner held the top positions. Huffman was out for vengeance in moto two. After taking the lead, he held off Lacey for many laps before losing ground to his opponent. After Y getting the worst of the shoving match, Huffman finished 10th. Lacey also won this moto to cap off a 1-1 sweep, trailed by Moore, who placed second overall with a 4-2 score, followed by the consistent Siebler (3-3), Binckley (6-5), Huffman (2-10) and Dale Ainslie (10-4). The showdown between Lacey and Huffman didn't end with the 125cc class. The two would meet again in the 250cc Pro class. The best of their battles was the first 250cc Pro moto. After trading the lead many, many times, Lacey tried a daring pass, and the two tangled; Lacey was sent sprawling to the turf. Lacey would finish a dismal 15th, ending his chances of a sweep of the Pro classes at the back-to-back rounds. Huffman easily won, while Siebler, Terlecki, Ainslie and Honda rider J.R. Vielle completed the top five. Huffman also led for much of the second moto, but in the end, the win went to Lacey. Huffman, though, scored the overall win with a 1-2 punch. Lacey's 15-1 tally left him stranded in sixth overall, behind Huffman, Siebler (2-3), Terlecki (3-4), Ainslie (4-5) and Vielle (5-6). Moore, riding Yamaha and Suzuki machinery, first posted a victory in the Over 25 Pro class. A former AMA National number holder, Moore amassed large leads in his sweep of the class. Fellow Suzuki rider Gary Terlecki placed second to Moore, fol- lowed by KTM-mounted Dave Sibley and Washington's Travis Gage. Moore was equally impressive in the Over 30 Pro class, winning both motos, ahead of Sibley and J.R. Meusling. While Lacey, Huffman and Moore were the cream of the crop in the Professional ranks, there were also two other riders who stood head and shoulders above the competition on this day. Landon Currier and Travis Farmer were the only riders other than Moore to snare two class wins. Currier was the dominant 60ccclass contestant, as the KTM rider from Brush Prairie, Washington, walloped the competition in the 60cc Senior and 60cc Open classes, winning all four motos he contested. Currier's main competition came from Tevin Tapia and Taylor Monroe in both classes. Farmer also had tough competition in his wins. Local Yamaha rider Nathan Whitlow (who had earlier topped the Before The Hill Junior class) chased Farmer in the 125cc Junior class and finished second overall. Robert Montgomery trailed Farmer in the 250cc Junior class. Farmer, Currier and Moore all swept their respective classes at the backto-back rounds. eN Allulay MotIIl'$JIGrb Plrll Allulny.
