Yamaha Dealers Series Round 2: Glen Helen Raceway Park STORV AND PHOTOS BV JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 1 housand Oaks Kawasaki/Yamaha's Richie Owens was the big paycheck winner at the second round of the Yamaha Dealers Series at Glen Helen Raceway. Owens rode the only Kawasaki in fields dominated mostly by YZs in both 125cc and 250cc Pro action. Owens, who did not contest the opener two weeks earlier, led both 125cc motos from the beginning to ace out Cody Knauss of the defending team champions, John Burr Cycles of Fontana. Yamaha rider Terry Fowler, the 250cc winner at the series opener, could not keep pace with the younger Owens, despite two good starts, and he had to settle for second at this outing. The weekly Intermediate showdowns have been turning into spectacular clashes, with a handful of riders all in the hunt. Once again, Andy Bakken scored the top honors in the 250cc Intermediate class, while Joshua Grant bested the 125s. Bakken, riding out of the same shop as Owens, rode to the first victory over a tenaciously determined Jared Minor. on a JBC Yamaha. Micky Griffin, who is usually at the front on his Temecula Motorsports Yamaha, seemed to be tripping over himself back in third. So when Griffin came back in the second moto and charged to the win, Bakken felt some relief from the pressure, knowing that a runner-up finish was all he needed to secure the overall triumph - which he attained, with Minor again close behind. This trio again faced off in the 125s, being joined by solo-class entry Grant, on a Tom Morgan Racing Honda. This foursome promises to be in the thick of things for years to come, as they plan on moving up to the Pros before the year is over. On this weekend Grant prevailed after Minor, who scored a first-moto win, tumbled down to sixth place in the second race due to a spill. Grant. who placed second in their initial confrontation, kicked his CR into high gear and sped away with the second-race victory. Bakken, whose father was an AMA District 37 desertracing star from the '70s, secured the "place" showing with a 4-2 performance. Minor grabbed third place. Griffin, who swapped his two-stroke 125cc for a thumper less than a month ago, still seems to be getting acquainted with the new mount. Normally poking his front tire into the first turn near the front, he has yet to get a blast off the line better than mid pack. On this day, he still fought from behind to manage fourth overall with a 7-3 outing. Trent Pugmire's last birthday pushed him into the next level of racing, but he seems to have settled back into his winning ways: He topped all four motos he entered, acing both the Superminis and the 85cc (12- 13) class. In both events, Yamaha-mounted Matt Dowell of the defending shop champs had to settle for second, behind the KX rider. The Paluzzis took home an armful of trophies as well. Daniel needs to find room for three more first-place trophies, as the Cobra tamer recorded the 50cc Stock and Modified (7 -8) wins, as well as the 65cc (4-8) victory on a Kawasaki. Meanwhile, Nick got second place in the 85cc (4-11) class, behind fellow Kawasaki jockey Michael Hall. The only other two-class winner was Cobra racer Mike Victorian of West Coast, who bested the fields in both 50cc (4-6) Stock and Modified racing. The brother-and-sister act of Chaparral's Elizabeth and Cameron Bash also got wins. Elizabeth won the Women's class, and Cameron topped the 50cc Shaft class. Montclair Yamaha, second in the points standings, was led this week by Trent Pugmire won all four motos he entered. acing both the Supermini and 85cc (12-13) classes in San Bernardino, California. 62 JULY 9. 2003 cycle n e vv s (Right) Richie Owens topped the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at round two of the Yamaha Dealers Series.
