Stroke class and placed a respectable seventh overall in the process. Yamaha jockey Nick Travis followed Sumner in second, with Shannon Javis taking third on a Honda. In the two-hour I 25cc-200cc (13-17) class, T ravis Toogood took his first victory of the 2003 season. Toogood used consistent lap times and his mud-riding skills to take the win on his KX 125. Following closely in second was Kawasaki jockey Chase Seiting, who finished only eight seconds behind Toogood. Third place went to Honda pilot Dan Deyman, who finished seven minutes behind the ieaders. JUNE 8 The fourth round of the AMA District 14 Hare Scrambles Championships was held at the Bent Wheels facility in Rose City, Michigan. Cloudy skies and thunderstorms were forecast, and Mother Nature didn't disappoint. As this region of Michigan had already had its share of rain, the course was muddy for the morning's programs. Then the skies let loose just prior to the start of the afternoon program, which made for downright sloppy course conditions. Team Green Kawasaki's Chris Gallt is no stranger to quagmire conditions, having contested all of the muddy GNCC rounds this season, and thus he was prepared and took the win. However, Gallt's victory did not come easily. The Bent Wheels staff laid out a 6-mile track that mainly consisted of winding grasstrack sections, and due to the soil's being mainly clay-based, the rain-soaked course was as slippery as a greased cookie sheet. As the 12 Expert riders headed into the first turn, it was once again KTM rider Brian Marc at the front of the pack, with a bevy of fast AA riders hot on his tail. Galit emerged with the early lead as the riders were scored at the end of the first lap. but he had company. Yamaha rider Aaron Wegner was nipping at Gallt's heels, and he wasn't about to let him get away. As the race progressed, the course began to "groove in" as the rain subsided. However, the scene at the front of the pack didn't change. Wegner kept his Ray C's Cycle/ WER/IMS/iron Man Sprockets YZ125 right on Gallt's rear fender, and it was all the Team Green Kawasaki rider could do to stay out front. After three hours of racing, the two competitors came blasting into the scoring area side by side, with Gallt earning the win. Wegner was officially scored two seconds behind Gallt. taking second on the day. Third overall went to Kawasaki-mounted Steve Willey, who enjoyed the muddy conditions and finished with a grin on his face. Next through scoring was Honda rider Travis Tudethout, earning fourth overall. Tudethout is the early-season points leader, and his consistency has been a welcome change from his frustrating 2002 season. Enduro Engineering's Corey Calkins rode his KTM thumper through scoring next. placing fifth overall. The top placing non- Expert was once again Clint Sumner. although he competed on his Honda four-stroke at Bent Wheels instead of his CR125. Sumner easily won the Four- Bent Wheels Motorcycle Club: At round four of the AMA District 14 Hare Scrambles in Rose City, Michigan, Brian Marr (59) earned the holeshot, but Team Green Kawasaki's Chris Gallt (19) went on to win the overall. Willow Springs Kart Track Herrin Swoops to Conquer By ROD GIRARD WILLOW SPRINGS, CA, JUNE 8 The heat was on for the California Motorcycle Road Racing Association's June meeting on the tight yet quick Willow Springs Kart Track. With the biggest rig on the paddock. some may feel that young Josh Herrin has been given an unfair advantage. But the simple truth is that there is no substitute for preparation, proficiency and professionalism. regardless of the level of racing. However, in the end. it is still the rider that makes it happen. and Herrin is happening in a big way. In the Expert Stock race, the youthful exuberance of Herrin was again pitted against the experience and craftiness of Leonard Mellgren. the "Zen Master" of Willow Kart. Winning the scramble to the first turn in race one. Herrin bested Mellgren for the lead. with Michaei Beck and Scott Garner following in tight order. Although Herrin would lead from wire to wire, he wasn't given a moment's rest. as a hardcharging Mellgren pulled out every trick in his bag - to no avail. Behind the two leaders, Beck and Garner battled equally bard for position, with Garner overcoming an off-track excursion to take third from the young upand-comer. In race two, Herrin was lightning-quick off the line, followed by Beck and Garner. Mellgren, in fourth, had some ground to make up. Meligren quickly dispatched both Beck and Garner. and then he put his head down to catch Herrin. who had begun to distance him· self from the field. Mellgren reeled in Herrin on the penultimate lap, but he was unable to make the pass, and Herrin took the flag for the overall. Some distance behind the leaders. there was a three-way battle for third. as Jason Van Slyke had moved up to mix it up with Beck and Garner. At the flag, Garner was able to regain his position. finishing third. over Beck in fourth and Van Slyke in fifth. By day's end. Herrin had impressively swept three Expert classes, letting only the Expert Formula GP-c1ass win get away. In a pair of races that gave no individual a clear advantage, the Expert Formula GP was a real toss-up. Van Slyke looked unbeatable in race one, distancing himself from the field, while Herrin and B.J. Prince diced for second, and Mellgren was unable to do better than fourth. In race two, Herrin was quickest off the line, only to go down in turn one. Mellgren took over and held off Prince for the win. Van Slyke cue I e faded quickly to finish fifth. giving Mellgren the overall. Andrew Barnes. who was never in contention in race one, moved up to take third, while Herrin picked himself up quickly and worked his way back up to fourth and an overall third. After being unchallenged in race one, Van Slyke could do no better than fourth overall. Results BEG STK' 1 Jeff Ha'Wklns; 2. Richllrd Bell 3. Tony Vaughn: 4. HectOf Salinas: 5. Christl HlInson. Two riders, Brandon Yoder and Hunter Shingler, quickly pulled to the front of the pack and began dicing for the lead, followed closely by three other riders. Yoder and Shingler swapped the lead sev· eral times each lap, making for an exciting event. Shingler's luck ran out, however, on the last lap, when he ran off the track in the infarfl"Oes Yucca turn. He lost three positions, but he was able to make up two of those positions to finish in third. Yoder held on to the lead to take the checkered fiag, followed closely by Klee Bethel.
