Texas World Speedway: Joe Prussiano took the Unlimited Supersport Expert win at round six of the CMRA Championship Series in College Station, Texas. Track conditions for the Unlimited Supersport race were less than ideal, as, for the third event in a row, weather was a major factor in the CMRA Series. Mother Nature deposited large amounts of precipitation in the area on Friday night, and a Saturday morning shower. followed by threatening skies, made conditions inconsistent and tricky for the rest of the weekend, with several portions of the track holding a fair amount of water throughout the event. Because of the ongoing threat of bad weather, Sunday's sprint events were shortened to five laps. Michael Sanchez. riding a Suzuki GSXR 11 00. sat on the pole at the start of the Unlimited Supersport Expert race, and he took advantage of that position with a clean sprint through turn one to take the lead. Annandale's Chris Rankin got a good jump from row three and followed Sanchez through to grab second. while Honda CBR954RR-mounted Prussiano got an excellent start from his fourth-row position and exited turn one in third. At the exit of turn three, the order was Sanchez. Rankin and Prussia no, followed by GSX-R"1000 jockeys John Ross and Marcus McBain. and then Andy Galindo. John Orchard. Northwest Honda's Ronnie Lunsford, Kevin Pate and Brett Champagne. On the front straight, Prussiano took the high line and drafted by Rankin's CBR600RR to take control of second going into lap two. Starting lap three, Prussiano duplicated his pass on Rankin by drafting past Sanchez at the stripe. Sanchez attempted a countermove later in the lap by taking a look to the inside of Prussiano in the infield carousel turn, but he couldn't find enough room to make the pass. This battle carried Prussiano and Sanchez to a three-second gap over Rankin. with Galindo, Ross. Pate and an on-the-move Champagne several bikelengths behind. By lap four, Prussiano had put a gap on Sanchez, after the Suzuki rider overcooked it going into tum three. "I lost it in three on the brakes," said Sanchez. "I could hang with him. but I lost time in three. I just lost it and drifted real wide, and he put a big gap on me." With the extra breathing room, Prussiano was able to ride a conservative race to the finish. Sanchez came home in second, followed by Rankin. Galindo and Pate. "Michael was going real well, and I knew if I made any mistakes, he would be there," said Prussiano. "I just tried to keep it clean and not try to take any chances. The track was green in places, and I was spinning in places that I normally wouldn't, but it worked out all right." While Prussiano won the only sprint race he entered, Sanchez returned to take five Expert wins and two seconds in eight events to pocket $2975 for the weekend. 78 JULY 9. 2003' cue I e all GP: I. Mid-Carolina Speedway Olliff 'n' the Others in the Rain, Dear By TERRY Harro NEESES. SC, MAY 31 Rain may have delayed the racing action at Mid-Carolina by two weeks, but it didn't dampen the competitive spirit on Saturday night, as riders returned to put on quite a show for the spectators. All classes saw handleoargrazing and left-turn sliding on the Mid·Carolina clay. Metter, Georgia's rompin', stompin', 55pound.l1-year·old future flat-tracking superstar, Zach Olliff, went three for three. topping the 80cc. 125cc and 250cc classes. Olliff jumped out from the start line in his hotorange leathers, aboard his C.O. Logging/ Honda of Statesboro-backed machines and cut away from the pack every time and streaked all the way to the checkered flag. The closest racing of the night was in the Open Amateur event. where strong riders traded the first four spots back and forth for all 10 laps of the main. When the dust settled. Bubba Seyle had taken the top spot on his Stokes Automotive Honda. Not far behind him was his uncle Eddie Stokes, with their fellow Honda pilot Henry Perritt in third. Jeff Salley was close behind in fourth. on his Ed Salley Racing Yamaha; Salley was making his "redebut" after being sidelined for the first few races due to an injury, but he didn't look the least bit rusty. Honda rider Eddie Salley and Yamaha rider Darren Hawke were fifth and sixth. Another exciting class was the Senior Over 45 B class, with some hot competition among its six riders. Local racer Speedy Davis came out the victor on his OldSouthTractor.com Honda. despite valiant efforts by Ed Salley and Woods Honda rider Vern Morton. In the Senior Over 45 A main. Lloyd Widener, on his Widener Electric-sponsored Honda, charged from the back of the pack to take over the lead on lap five. with Honda rider Jerry Stokes and then Fuzzy Hutto, aboard his StarPlates by Fuzzy·sponsored Honda, in hot pursuit. Widener took the win, with Stokes second and Hutto third. The highlight of the evening was surely the Adult 50cc exhibition. Seven brave souls took their mighty machines to the start line for three full laps around the quarter-mile clay oval. Looking like long-legged spiders on the minis, they traded spots, and it was a close race to the end. Eddie "The Earthquake" Salley was off to a hot start. but a size-13 shoe on the shifter caused a bad gear change, allowing just enough time for Henry "The Hot Dog" Perritt to snatch the prize. Meanwhile, George "Of The Jungle" Wells made a valiant effort, putting his little Honda to the test. as did the other two Honda/Kawasaki of Orangeburg's featured riders, Mark "The Merciless" Gilmore and Lee "Blackbeard" Blackmon. Not to be forgotten, Lee "The Terminator" Strock powered his 1986 Honda 50cc Chrome Special to an honorable sixth-place finish. The usual podium spot escaped Bubba "Busted In Tum Three" Seyle, as he laid down his very first Honda, recently restored by his dad, on the last lap. Results 50/60: I. Auslin Lorick (Hon): 2.
