It was one fantastic day at one of western New York's oldest motocross tracks, as a whole lot of young and old motocross riders reached a rare level of MX nirvana. Before the second .. very muddy moto, rumors circulated around the starting gate that Honda rider Wright had installed a paddle tire and was on his way. As the other Pros soon found out, Wright's paddle-tire rumor was just that - a rumor. When the gate fell and they rounded the first turn, series regular Jon·Paul Powell had the lead until Stone and Wright quickly made their way around. Stone soon found out that Wright is quite the mud rider, as Wright would lead much of the moto. Behind the lead duo were Michigan transplant Whipple, Steve Sampley, and Benoit, who fell early in the moto. As the checkers were thrown, it was the smooth and consistent Stone with the win, followed closely by Action Honda/Reynard Mods' rider Wright. As it turned out, Stone had his way with 250cc Pros as well, leading nearly every lap. His stiffest competition in the class was professional off-road racer Josh Weisenfels, aboard his KTM 250 SX, in the second mota. Stone won both motos, only falling down one time. "This is the first time I've been to this track," Stone said. "I like it - the layout. the dirt, everything. I've never considered myself much of a mud rider, but tonight was good. Very, very muddy, but good.' Sugar Creek MX Park Mid-South MX Championship Series Round 11: Sugar Creek MX Park Pineville. Missouri Results: June 14, 2003 (Round 11 of 13) 50 (4.6): I. JlIke Gl"l!!en (Cob): 2. Jack Sheppard (KTM); .3. Michael Wright (Pol): 4. Hayden Schulu (KTM): 5. Kody Stricklin Stone Shines in the Slop By CHOCK BALL PINEVILLE, MO, JUNE 14 What started out as a great night of racing on a prime track soon turned into a matter of "surviving the slop' at Sugar Creek MX. All was fine for the first set of motos, but during the second go~around, what can only be described as a monsoon flooded the track. Promoter Dirt Bike Mike and track officials met to decide the fate of the night's program. All events that had not yet run their second moto would be canceled, and the overalls would be decided by first·moto finishes. The exception, of course, was the Pros. In 50cc (4·6) action, local hotshoe Michael Wright rocketed to the early lead aboard his Action Honda/Polini·backed Polini. That lead didn't last long, however, as Wright dismount· ed his bike in the second corner, handing the lead to KTM rider Jack Sheppard, who was being hounded by Mayhan's Maniacs Racing/No Fear/Spy/FMF·backed Cobra jockey Jake Green. Daltyn Kennedy, Shelby Maz· zoleni and Wright gave chase. By the end of lap one, Green had put his Cobra out front, leaving the battling behind him to Sheppard and Wright; the latter would go down three more times. At moto's end, the order was Green, Sheppard. Wright, KTM rider Hayden Schultz, and Kennedy. When the gate dropped for the second moto, Sheppard absconded with the holeshot, but Green quickly moved past and set sail for the checkered flag. Behind him, Wright was slicing and dicing to make a path toward the front of the pack. A crash on the uphill section cost Wright valuable time, as Green checked out and led this one home to the checkers, followed by a consistent Sheppard, an obviously upset Wright, Kody Stricklin, and Schultz. A microphone-shy Jake Green wasn't very talkative after the race, but his mom, Jamie, gladly obliged. "This is so great." she said. "We got qualified for Loretta's, and he's riding so well. It's just Jake and I doing all these races by ourselves as a team. It feels great to watch him win like this. Thanks to Craig Mayhan and Mr. Albert; without them, we couldn't be doing all this." In 125 Pro action, Whisper'n Smith had the early lead as they set off up the hill. Team Green's Brian Stone quickly moved around Smith and opened up a slight. gap. Next to catch Smith were Nathaniel "Buddy' Benoit and Shawn Wright. This order lasted a few Sugar Creek MX Park: Mayhan'S Maniacs' Jake Green rode flawlessly on his way to 1-1 moto finishes in the 50cc (4-6) class at round 11 of the Mid-South MX Championship Series in Pineville, Missouri. 76 JULY 9, 2003' cue e nuVll'S (KTM). 50 (7.8): I. By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON HILLIARD, FL, JUNE 14 The first round of the inaugural Moon and Stars Summer Series, sponsored by Western Power Sports and Fly Racing, kicked off at North Florida Motocross Park. Other sponsors helping out with the series include Scott Goggles. Michelin Tires, MX America, Doug Harvey Racing, and Chris Cruz Artistry. The weather was great and the thunderstorms kept their distance as 245 riders got to see who would lead their class going into round two. The track was prepped perfectly to start off the night, but it got rough and tough as the racing wore on. Two riders who endured the night's racing were Matt Theus and Lee Tathum. Theus tock his NFR/Phoenix Moto Shop/Fox/ACS Cont./M2R Helmets·sponsored Suzuki to four moto wins. while Tathum was the big-money winner on the night, taking home the lion's share of the $500 purse. The Cycle West Accessories KTM rider won the 250cc Money class with a perfect score and won the overaJl in the Over 30 Money class with a 3·1 tally. The evening started off with some tigbt racing action in the Pee Wee 50cc class. Kicen Gardner led Chance Crain as the two went at it for the lead. Gardner won the motd, over Crain. Crystal Collins got third, ahead of Nichols Wirth and Liquid Performance/Ernie· Cycle's Bailey Ellington. Moto two saw them go at it again. Gardner led the first lap, but this time Crain slipped underneath to take the win. Wirth moved up to third, and Ellington and Tyler Powell rounded out the top five. The 16·29 class was next. Frank's Trac· tor/DHR Suspension/Performance Honda's Clint Frank led ATV Motocross Crossroads' Jeffrey Tyson and Powersports' Jordan Gooch. The three pulled away to battle for the lead. Frank led until after the halfway flag. North Florida MX Park: Matt Theus (22) and Cody Johnson (214) fight for the holeshot in the first 85cc Open moto in Hilliard, Florida, site of round one of the inaugural Moon and Stars Summer Series.
