He won 1 lout of '12 motos at round eight of the Wild West Nationals, his only loss coming at the throttle hand of Nick Thompson in the second 125cc Intermediate moto. Fraughton still won the 250cc Intermediate and Open Amateur classes. Other double winners included Gray Davenport, in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, and Braiden Hartzell, in the 50cc Modified and 60cc (6-8) classes. One unfortunate problem occurred. A couple of aocc riders were riding a little too aggressively. They were approached by the referee and warned that if it happened again, they would be disqualified. They failed to take the warning, tangled again and were disqualified. This should send a message to all the Wild West riders - and their parents - that rubbin' may be racin', but intentionally taking one another out is not allowed and will not be tolerated. In the first 125cc Intermediate moto, Thompson nailed the holeshot, with Travis Clifton on his heels. It took Fraughton one lap to catch Clifton and move into second; by then. Thompson had built a three-second lead. Fraughton whittled away at Thompson's lead and made a quick pass around him in the corner. Daniel Johnson was passing through the pack at will, and he caught up to Thompson. Fraughton pulled away for the win, with Thompson second and Johnson third. The next moto was probably the best of the day. Thompson snatched the holeshot, while Fraughton was fourth heading out of the first corner. Thompson ripped off a six-second lead over Zane Trivett, while Fraughton closed in on Trivett. Fraughton took two laps to get by Trivett, while Thompson's lead stayed at six seconds. Fraughton was gaining about two seconds per lap on Thompson. On the last lap, Fraughton was within striking distance, and he made his move. Fraughton got a good drive out of the rhythm section and appeared to be catching Thompson going over the final double, At the sweeping right, Fraughton had the inside line, but traction was limited, and Thompson railed the top berm and closed out Fraughton for the win and overall. Sophomore Pro David Panzer picked off the holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto. Panzer's lead was short-lived, as Gray Davenport had grabbed the lead by the end of the first lap. Brandon Barnes was quickly moving through the pack, and by the second lap he had taken over second place. Davenport seemed just a tad faster than the rest of the class, and he maintained a comfortable lead. Josh Borges made his way through the pack and claimed third, behind Barnes, In moto two, Panzer again mastered the holeshot, but again Davenport quickly worked his way into the lead. Barnes found himself in second, with Pete Roberts challenging for the position. Barnes and Roberts tangled; Roberts hit the dirt while Barnes ran away. Panzer went down on the final lap, letting Chad Wallwork scoot by for third. Davenport took the overall with two wins, Barnes (2-2) was runner-up, and Wallwork (5-3) was third. The Open Amateur class provided some close racing, as Beni Williams showed that he has the speed to run with Justin Fraughton. However, Williams just couldn't get a good start, and Fraughton took the first moto easily while Williams was mired in the pack, though he did manage to work his way up to fourth. Ryan Richardson hung with Fraughton fOe most of the moto and held off a charging Johnson for second. Fraughton led moto two, with Richardson second, Josh Kenley third and Williams fourth. Fraughton was enjoying clear track in front of him while Williams was on the throttle, passing his way into second by the third lap. As Williams moved into second, Fraughton had a four-second lead over the speedy Williams, who was gaining about two seconds per lap on Fraughton when the white flag flew. Fraughton could not only feel Williams pressuring him, he would get a look at Williams' front tire, but Williams just ran out of laps. The two will likely meet again, and it will be another battle to the end. In the aocc Intermediate class, Thayne Eddins and Cole Myer battled back and forth, passing each other twice before the first lap ended. Myer pulled out a small lead over Eddins. Then Eddins fell in the whoops and ended up fourth. Brandon Brower took over second, with Dacoda Sorochuk finishing third. Brower ripped a perfect holeshot in moto two, with Myer in second and Eddins third. Myer kept the pressure on Brower but never got close enough to attempt a pass, and Brower took the win, with Myer second, Sorochuk third and Rudi Williams fourth. Brower (2-1) took the overall, over Myer (1-2) and Sorochuk (3-3). 25~ PRO: l. Josh Borges (Yam). 30+ JR: J. Chris Hale (KTM); 2. Matt Psalto (Hon): 3. Duffy Williams (Kaw): 4. Aaron Smith (Hon); 5. And now, a little "Trivial Pursuit, motocross-style" .... Where in the world was the first Dunlop Tires Day event held? At Hunt Moto Park. What world-class motocross team used Hunt Moto Park as a test facility in the 1980s? Team Yamaha's European Unadilla Team tested Dunlop tires here. What former East Coast National Four· Stroke and Western Four-Stroke Champion piloted a Suzuki Rampage in the Junior Mini class at Hunt Moto Park in the early 1990s? The very same one who returned on this day to this old-school motocross track - none other than defending Eastern and Western Four-Stroke Champion Paul Carpenter. With a full gate of Open Expert/Pro riders ready to flood the track, all eyes were on the number-one 2003 WNYMA Expert, Brandon Kuhn; former number-one WNYMA Expert Joe Ellington; and, of course, Carpenter, as well as his cousin Jack Carpenter. The drop of the rag wasn't a drag for Paul, as he powered his way through the holeshot with Kuhn, Jamie Robinson and Jack chasing that big White Brothers four-stroke Honda. Paul was haulin' while cousin Jack was actin' like a master chef, slicing and dicing it up with Kuhn and Robinson at Cuisinart speed, serving up "terra firma pie" from the second spot. Robinson won the battle over Kuhn for the third spot, while Don Schmidt, Brian Austin and Joe Ellington were locked in a battle for fifth through seventh. Paul still had a firm grip on the lead, but Jack was only half a heartbeat behind him on lap two. Robinson, Kuhn, Austin, Ellington and Schmidt resembled an Old West posse, trying to run down Paul and Jack so they could collect the bounty. Paul had other plans, and he took the checkered flag in moto one with a four-second lead over Jack. Robinson hung on to third at the finish, with Kuhn and Austin rounding out the top five. Between taking the Open Expert, 16-24 and Four-Stroke classes to school, Paul found time to watch his cousin compete and answer a lot of young and older riders' questions. One young 50cc rider asked Paul if he had ever competed against Travis Pastrana. "Yep, that's always a blast," Paul responded. When asked if he had ever competed against Ricky Carmichael, an older rider answered for Paul: "You are talking to one of the few guys to score a holeshot over 'RC' in the entire 2002 season." The rest of the Open Expert class were locked, cocked and ready to rock on into moto two. Austin timed the drop of the gate perfectly and snagged the holeshot and lead, over Paul, Schmidt. Jack and Jason Grady. Paul roosted his way around the track's natural terrain. fending off Schmidt and keeping an eye on Austin until Schmidt slipped up and went down cornering. Paul had Austin hooked, and he qUickly reeled in the 42-year-old competitor. Looking inside and outside, Paul applied intense pressure on Austin until the opportunity to pass him cleanly presented itself, and Paul kept it pinned from there. Austin tried to mount a counterchallenge for the lead, but Paul was in command of the lead. Paul opened up a cushion while Jack went to work on Austin. Schmidt, Kuhn and Robinson re-joined the posse just in time to see Austin slip off the pace, allowing them and a gaggle of other riders to get past him. Paul (1-1) owned first overall. Jack (2-2) took second overall for all his hard work. Kuhn (4-4) proved that being consistently fast and upright pays off, by claiming third overall, over Robinson (3-5) and Schmidt (7-3). ~ ~ w ~ Z "' :::l o a: w ~ iii [3 r a.
