Wild West Nationals Round 7: Ogden Cycle Association Fraughton Triples, Davenport Doubles BY DAVE ROONSEVELLE OGDEN, UT, JUNE 7 Justin Fraughton won three classes in convincing fashion - the 125cc, 250cc and Open Intermediate classes - while Gray Davenport was just as dominant in the I 25cc and 250cc Pro classes. Neither Fraughton nor Davenport lost a moto all day, showing that they were forces to be reckoned with. The weather was nearly perfect, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s, and the track in prime condition, making for a great time for racers and race fans alike. In 250cc Intermediate action, Fraughton took the early lead and looked ready to run away with an easy win. Cody Argyle was not going to let Fraughton run away, and he kept him in sight; if Fraughton bobbled, Argyle would have a shot at the lead. However, Fraughton kept up the pace and never let Argyle get close enough to make a move. Fraughton took the first moto, with Argyle second. Reed Tingey rode strong to take third. There was a real dogfight for fourth, between Josh Kenley and Chad Jorgenson, with the nod going to Kenley in the first moto. The second moto started with Fraughton out in front again. but this time it was Steven Alba hanging on Fraughton's fender, looking as though he could match Fraughton's speed. Alba tried to pressure Fraughton and force the leader into making a mistake, but Fraughton was on fire, and as hard as Alba tried, he couldn't rattle Fraughton into giving up any passing opportunities. Fraughton took the overall with two mota wins. Argyle took second with a 2·4 score, and Jorgensen rode to third in the moto, taking third overall with a 5-3 tally. In the 250cc Pro class, Davenport weaved his way through the first corner to take the early lead in mota one, in front of Brandon Barnes and Chad Wallwork. Davenport started to pull away, as Barnes was unable to keep pace. Kip Posey got a poor start but was working his way up through the field. As Davenport continued to lead, Posey was catching up to him. but he was running out of laps. When the checkers flew, Posey had made up time, but not enough, and Davenport took the win. Posey settled for second. Bames was able to hold off Wallwork for third. Moto two started as a replay of the first moto, with Davenport grabbing the holeshot and Barnes in tow. Posey again had to work his way through the pack, and by the time he had garnered second, Davenport had a fivesecond lead. Posey was unable to make up much ground, and he cruised to a secondplace finish while Davenport took the win. Barnes had a solid third seemingly in the books when he developed brakes problems and had to drop off the pace. Josh Borges and Wallwork had been battling back and forth all race; Borges was able to get by Wallwork at the finish for third. Davenport took the overall, with Posey second and Borges third on the day. Josh Anderson powered his way to the holeshot in the 250cc Junior class, with Chris Yarnell on his heels. Yarnell got around Anderson and then was quickly passed by Justin Eliswood. Jeremy Crandall worked his way around Yarnell, and then Drew Parcell had Yarnell in his sights. Yarnell and Parcell tan· gled in a flat corner; Yarnell's leg got stuck in between Parcell's rear fender and tire. What could have been an ugly crash ended up being just some bruises and a torn pair of pants for Yarnell and a lengthy stop for Parcell. Ellswood took the win, with Crandall second and early leader Anderson in third. Anderson again controlled the early pace as mota two started. Ellswood took a couple of laps to get around traffic and take the lead from Parcell. Ellswood took the win and the overall, with Crandall (2-3) taking second for the day and holeshot specialist Anderson (3-4) third. Hayden Roberts topped the 80cc (8-11) Junior class with two wins, though not without 70 JULY 9, 2003' cue e a little work, as it took him most of the first moto to get by Landon Powell. Keeping the pressure on Roberts, Powell took second in both motos. Sky Nicolas and Chaz Spears had a battle in both motos; the two passed each other a couple of times each moto. Nicholas was able to take third overall with a 4-3 score, over Spear's 3-4 efforts. Ogden Cycle Association Ogden, Utah Results: June 7, 2003 (Round 71 50 SHAFT: 1. Austin Jorgensen (Vam); 2. AH8MA Pro-Flo/Progressive Suspension Historic Cup Road Race series Rounds 9-10: Carolina Motorsports Park Carr, Hatten Split Raindrops and Wins BY GREG POOLE KERSHAW, SC, JUNE 7-8 Carolina Motorsports Park hosted rounds nine and 10 of the AHRMA Pro-Flo/Progressive Suspension Historic Cup Road Race Series. When Friday's practice ended. the rain started, and it continued until 11 a.m. on Sunday. Saturday morning's practice was on a slick track surface. Nevertheless, most of the riders decided to brave the weather. The Formula One Battle of the Twins event best displayed some of the top riders' abilities, and Cycle Tech-backed Ducati rider Mark Hatten and Atlanta H-D/Buell Fireblade pilot Chris Carr came out on top. Carolina's start leads to a left-hand 90degree turn, which acts as a funnel, sorting the riders out. Suzuki TL-mounted Robert Patch emerged in front, followed by Carr and Ducati pilot AI Charles. Roosting through the rain, Patch and Carr stayed a length apart, while Charles worked his way closer. On lap seven, Patch blinked and Carr and Charles both slipped by; with only half a lap remaining, that closed the deal. Carr and Charles finished first and second in this rain-soaked race, followed by Patch. "I had a good start," Carr said, "but Patch beat me into tum one. I decided to stay close and follow him and figure out where I could pass. I was able to make a late move coming off the sweepers into the lead. We had some trouble at first. Brian [Wilson, Carr's mechan· ic] has put a lot of effort into it. I think we are on our way now. We have made big improvements over Jennings." "An excellent race'" declared Charles, the number-one plate holder. "It was a little tentative start, and I lost a little ground - my first time on rain tires. Near the end, I was positioned. If Chris hadn't moved, I felt I could have passed them both. Near the end, I could have sworn I saw two white flags. It then appeared Patch backed out of it. I made my move and passed just as Chris did. I couldn't find enough room to get Chris before the finish." "Well, I was out for a Saturday ride - it was fun," commented Patch. "I figured the rider n e vv s who came out of tum one leading had a good chance at winning, because of weather and track conditions. I didn't realize I was the rabbit to chase, las the others were] waiting for me to get tired. I was starting to think about coming off the track. Next thing I knew, I was being passed into third. n Round 10 started like Saturday, with light rain and the occasional open spot of sky, which gave the riders a tough time when it came to deciding on tires. Charging hard from the line, a new maximum number of bikes passed through turn one. Charles and Hatten came through in front, followed by Aprilia rider David Podolsky, Suzuki jockey Lawrence Corbin, and Carr. In tum nine, Carr attempted a wide pass around the sharp right-hander, only to find the limits and a lowside crash_ Charles, being close. was unable to get away and was also taken off the track for a tumble. Hatten and Podolsky moved past. From there on, Hatten set the pace. Podolsky remained smooth and close and was able to pass into the lead at one point, but Hatten passed him again and then held Podolsky off. Carr was able to re-join the race after his lows ide get-off, moving back into a third place. "'t was a good run," Hatten said. "I think everyone made the decision to run on rains. 1 began to bum them up about halfway, as conditions improved. My concentration was to keep it up on the fat part of my Bridgestones and stay ahead. David passed me once. I got him back going into tum eight. From there, I was able to hold him off." Podolsky looked exceptionally smooth and unaffected by the weather. "I had a great start," said Podolsky. "After Patch had fallen in the warm-up, I had a clear shot, like a front-row start. I was able to get tum one in third. I ended up following Hatten. Yesterday he tailed me; today I would tail him. I passed him and thought this might rattle his cage and he would make a mistake, but I think it did the opposite. He wicked it up. I was close enough on the last lap, I thought I might have a shot, but some lappers balked me. He was able to squeeze by but wp's almost run off the track. Hatten just rode a good race and took the win." Carolina Motorsports Park Kershaw, South Carolina Results: June 7-8, 2003 (Rounds 9 and 101 Saturday 200 ... GP: 1. Carl Anderson (Yam): 2.
