In the 250cc C class, Enterprise, Alabama's Jeremy Richard led Kawasakimounted Dwayne Marks by just three points, while Lynn Haven, Florida's Thomas Lau held a slim two-point advantage over Suzuki speedster Clay Jackson in the 83cc Beginner ranks. Series sponsors Cycle Nation, Bulldog Cycles, Circle B Contracting, Florida Motorsports, and First Communications provided awards and generous prize packages for the top five in each class. First-place trophies were metallic-red and 6 feet tall. A Fall Series is in the planning stage, with new tracks to be added. An aggressive Chad Williams topped both motos of the 250cc BIC class. In race one, he checked out on lap two and left B+C Racing's Buck Hartzog alone in second. Riding a YZ250, Richard tried several pass attempts over the doubles, but he couldn't get by thirdplace runner Michael Hare. At the finish, Richard was barely able to hold back Marks. Carl Drummond was sixth. With braking bumps developing, Hartzog doubled to second and went after Williams in moto two. Again, Hare held off Richard for third. Hartzog was unable to close on Williams and settled for another second. Hare placed third, while Richard secured the C-c1ass title by staying ahead of a closing Marks. Jackson put himself in position to win the 85cc Beginner championship by leading the first moto from wire to wire and moving ahead of Lau by one point. Behind Lau, Yellow Freight rider Chandler Hudson was turning in his best ride of the series. After surrendering third to Aaron Bourne in the whoops on lap one, he retook the position and held off FasTrac MX Park Cairo. Georgia Results: June 1, 2003 (Final Round) Bourne and a charging Tim Chumley. Honda rider Colby Smith was sixth. Lau and Hudson started up front in race two, while Jackson got rolling in fifth. Bourne moved on Chumley for third as the race began to slip away for Jackson; he wasn't able to get by Bourne until the final lap, and then he couldn't reel in the strong-riding Hudson. Lau's win gave him the title by four points over Jackson. Bourne rounded out the top three in the series, seven points ahead of Hud- P/W 50: I. Scotty HlIv~r (Yam): 2. B~nn~tt Enf1ng~r (Yam): 3. In moto one, he rode mistake-free and gave Yamahamounted Bill Bullard no opportunity to catch his KTM. Hare placed third on his KX. Marks went down on the face of a jump on the last lap, handing fourth to David Armstrong, who returned the favor by falling himself and putting Marks back in fourth before the checkers. In race two, Swain held back on the gate and gave the field a head start to turn one. Marks completed lap one ahead of the pack. Swain motored past and took a two-straightaway win. Hare was a comfortable third. Michael Cavallaro tried to take fourth from Armstrong, to no avail. Robert Godfrey brought his big KX500 home sixth. Also with an eye on the Regional, Clay Downing claimed the combined Youth win. In moto one, he had to deal with Ryan Baker. Hard on the throttle, KX125-mounted Baker pulled the first-moto holes hot and held off Downing's YZ250 to the finish. James Devilbiss ran third early before dropping back. Clint Stagner advanced from fifth to third. Downing controlled race two from start to finish. Stagner set up Baker over the "Super Double" and then used an inside pass to grab second. Baker shadowed him to the end. Matt Peevy picked up fourth, with Devilbiss on his rear fender. 65 BEG: I. Ball~y Parker (Kaw): 2. Brandon Wmfleld (Kaw): 3. Brantley Herman (Kaw): 4. Southern Enduro Riders Association Kids Series Round 6: Train Robbers Kids Enduro Little Train Robbers Steal the Day By CHARAY DuBOSE AND CAROLYN REED BISMARCK, AR, JUNE 7 The Arkansas Dirt Riders club hosted round six of the Southern Enduro Riders Association's Kids Series in Bismarck, Arkansas, at the Train Robbers Kids Enduro. The rocky trails seemed perfect for riding: not too dry, not too wet. The weather was ideal as the young racers lined up to duke it out once again. In the Beginner Pee Wee 50cc (4-6) class, Trent Whisenant took first, finishing his two laps in 14 minutes and 29 seconds, two minutes in front of second-placed James laFleur. The Pee Wee 50cc (4-8) class lined up next. The ongoing competition between KTM riders Hunter Rowland and Payne Jones was on again. Rowland and Jones have been battling back and forth all season, each giving it 100 percent. Jones had the season lead going r-~---------------------------""------'a: w into this race after Rowland's disappointing :0 run in Clanton, Alabama, on Memorial Day. III w Rowland had some serious catching up to do Q and he did. This crazy kid took off with only ~ one thing in mind: to win. Rowland completed his mission, leaVing Jones in second place. :I: This puts Rowland back in the race, but he's Q. still got some catching up to do. Everyone can't wait to see these wild boys at the next race: they both really want that trophy helmet. Revving up and ready to race next was the Intermediate Kids (7 -10) class. So far this season, Tyler Carter has been leading in the points. with his fellow Suzuki jockeys Jordyn DuBose and Chandler Rowland fighting over second place. Carter led with the fastest time on the first lap, with DuBose tailing him by only 13 seconds. However, right on DuBose's rear tire was Chandler. only a few seconds down. Lap two. with Carter still in his sight, DuBose rode his RM65 as hard as he could, pulling away from Chandler but still unable to catch fast boy Carter. After the second lap, Carter pulled away, finishing the four~lap race more than 30 seconds in front of DuBose, leaving Chandler in third and Kawasaki jockey FasTrac MX Park: This is the view Jason Swain's competitors had of him in the Over 30 John Higuera in fourth. contest at the final round of the Riders' Spring Shootout Series, in Cairo, Georgia. The Vet Kids (10-12) class started next, He went 1-1 on the day. and it featured another exciting duel. Suzukimounted Chris McMillan and Kawasaki rider a: t5 e Spencer Cook, two extremely fast and talented riders, have been fighting for first place all season. McMillan had the lead going into this race after spanking Cook at the Hillbilly Classic. Cook took the lead on the first lap and put an impressive six seconds on McMillan. On the second lap, Cook took an even bigger lead, and he dominated the remainder of the race, finishing almost a minute ahead of McMillan for a well-deserved win! "I had some trouble at a mudhole, where my bike got turned around, which cost me some time," McMillan said about his secondplace finish, "but Spencer was riding really good today."The track was good," Cook said, grinning from ear to ear, "and I won!" Also riding in the Vet class were some Intermediate-class kids who hadn't had enough. Carter, DuBose and Chandler were racing again. DuBose had Carter beat on the first lap, but he didn't get to keep the lead for long. Carter got a second wind and took over third, with DuBose still on his tail for the second and third lap. However, Carter pulled away once again, securing his third-place finish and leaving DuBose in fourth. Chandler was the fifth-place finisher. "I was exhausted!" Rowland said. If you ever have a chance to watch a kids race, don't miss it! These kids are amazing. Just remember that Randy Hawkins, Barry Hawke, Mike Lafferty and all the other Pros were once kids (or should I say. "younger kids"). You never know who·1I become the next Pro. Support the kids any chance you get; they definitely deserve it, and they appreciate it more than you know. The Arkansas Dirt Riders put on an awesome. fun race.
