Large's 6.818-second run topped the 800cc class by .34 of a second. Jack Mason made his first run of the season on the Thomas Racing/ Vinylcraft-sponsored Yamaha XS800 twin, posting a quick 7.305-second time to edge ahead of Strank. Disbennett rebounded from his 540cc problems and posted a lightning-fast 7.282-second time to move into third place. Brandon Kreeger then crashed after getting crossrutted to end the round. During the intermission the Watsons geared the Honda up for an assault on Large's time, but the second round times weren't improving when they pulled into the starting box. "The hill's getting chewed up, and Large really put a smoking-fast ride through," Watson said. "I know my bike can run fast enough if I can get the ride in." Watson's chance was gone by the first jump, as the ruts jerked his front end all over the place, and he had to settle for second. Strank also had problems staying straight while the R1 hooked up and nearly looped out. A near en do at the top of the hill finished his afternoon. "That was one of the most exciting rides I've had in a long time," Strank said. "We are just going to have to work our way out of this slump; fourths and fifths won't win the number-one plate." Neither Mason nor Disbennett could improve, and Kreeger couldn't crack the top 10 to end the day, sealing Large's win. "This win today goes to Tom (Reiser) and the crew," Large said.
