Bub rounded out the top three spots in the
Sport class.
Cole Walsdorf took the Middleweight final
field to the front straight, where Diedrich
motored into the lead. Diedrich, Scott Herbst
and Waldorf separated from the pack, and
each other, to finish in the top three spots.
From the very start of the Premier final,
Russell steadily led Diedrich away from the
field. Fillmore was barely able to keep the
leaders in sight and finished in third.

ELKHART LAKE, WI, MAY 24-25
Even though some of the local hotshoes were
racing at the Springfield Mile, the grids were
full at the second round of the Superbikers2
Regional Series. Riders from as far away as
Arizona and Georgia made their way to
Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for a weekend of
Supermoto racing.
Saturday was a day of open practice sessions for the experienced riders and race
schools for the new ones. One of the greatest
attractions of the Superbikers2 Series is the
chance to watch Scott Russell, riding for the
HMC KTM Supermoto Race Team, polishing
the same track skills that 9-year-old Tyler
Whitecotten is working to forge!
Transponders were mounted first thing on
Sunday morning. In addition to gridding the
heat races, the transponder results fueled the
arguments about engine displacement and
this track. During the third Middleweight session, Scott Diedrich ran the fastest qualifying
lap of the weekend on a Honda CRF450R. He
circled the O.B-mile, 13-turn track in 51.923
seconds. Russell, on a KTM 660. was the next
fastest. with a 52.121-second lap run in the
Premier session. Chris Fillmore was the only
other rider to sneak under the 53·second
mark. with a fast lap of 52.900 seconds on a
KTM 450 SX.
The heat races proved the transponder
results were accurate. Except for the Light·
weight class, each race had a lead group of
riders who separated themselves from the rest
of a tightly packed field. The Premier field was
so close that - after Diedrich, Russell and Fillmore . less than two seconds separated the
fourth- through 15th-best qualifying times!
Less than one second separated the first eight
riders in the Premier Mini class.
The ride of the day came from Richard
Goldberg, in the combined Lightweight/Sport
main. Joe Jancoski took the holeshot, with
Steve Reinke and Goldberg close behind.
While Jancoski and Reinke managed to put
their heads down and finish the first lap in the
lead, Goldberg managed to put the whole bike
down before even finishing the first lap. Starting with his second lap, Goldberg steadily
worked his way up toward the lead group,
which included William Rowe, the Sport-class
winner. A crash by Jancoski on the white-flag
lap eventually brought Goldberg into third.
Reinke rode the last lap to a win, and Goldberg finished in second, just ahead of Pete
Gerrit. During his podium interview with Goldberg, track announcer Joe Stoppleworth
returned the brush guard that was "crashed

Costley Returns
By DAWN BECK/FASTBECKS RACING
ALBUQUERQUE. NM, MAY 25
Stormy weather may have postponed two
Expert races until next month, but it didn't
dampen the exciting racing, as last year's
number-one plate holder, Todd Costiey.
returned to reassert his dominance in the
Superbike classes at round two of the SMRI
Series. However, the racing wasn't left just to
the big boys; SMRI introduced a brand-new
Open Beginner class, which featured three
women riders and plenty of competition for
the podium.
Costley appeared to be the spoiler in the
Middleweight Superbike race for the three
podium finishers from the season opener.
After two exciting laps, Jesse Beck established a lead over Brad Tinker, Colorado racer
Mike Applehans and the rest of the pack, and
he appeared to be running away until Costley
picked off riders one by one to reach the lead.
Injured in a big crash in the Unlimited GP race
last month, Beck held second, and Tinker
took third.
Costley repeated that performance in
Heavyweight Superbike, with Tinker and Beck
switching places on the podium.
However, it was the girls who stole the
show in the new Open Beginner race, as they
provided some of the best racing of the day,
trading places with the men and with one
another. Although Mitchell Smith took his first
race ever on his Yamaha, Nicole Robran and
Shawna Heyer tested their nerve as they traded second and third several times before
Robran decided she really did want second
place and pulled away from Heyer. Shannon
Chapman was on a borrowed bike (her hus·
band, Leigh, had crashed hers the day
before), and she muscled the 1100cc Kawasaki around the track to finish in last place,
behind fourth·place finisher Daniel Franchino.
The GTU/GTO races were combined for
the Novice classes, and David Pillar won this
race, as well as the Novice Open. The GTU/
GTO featured some heated competition
between Brad Wilson, who placed second, and
Alex Anastasiou, who placed third. Anastasiou
took another third in the Novice Open race,
but he made it tough for Troy Runck to take
second.
The Formula I 000 race featured some
exciting action, with Colorado rider Shane
Stoyko holding off local favorite Keith Miller
for seven laps to take first place.
In the Historic Vintage races, number-one
National rider Steve Brown took first in the
Lightweights, and Dennis Parris finished first in
the Heavyweights.

Sunflower Sweep
By DAWN SITZ
LYNDON, KS, MAY 25-26
It was a great weekend for racing as round
four of the Sunflower Series blasted off.
In the Pee Wee (4-6) class, KTM pilot Neil
Tajchman battled with Shelby Mazzoleni and
Dillon Cloyed in the first mota, but Tajchman
had a little trouble in the second moto, giving
Cloyed the overall win for Sunday. However,
Tajchman came back on Monday and took
the overall win, as Mazzoleni took second.
In the Pee Wee (7 -B) class, Tallan Smith
won three out of four motos over the two days
of racing. Lucas Kraus won the second moto
on Monday, with Tallan on his heels.
John Berry swept the 65cc (6-B) class,
winning all four of his motos. Riley Wolfe tried
to change that, but it didn't happen.
Tim Collins won the Over 40 class on both
days.
In the 125cc Intermediate class, Curtis
Peterson took the win on both days.
Mark Koontz and Doug Garman took first
and second, respectively, on both days of
