CA. MAY 24·25 Local Vintage motocross fans welcomed the first AHRMA National weekend in two years on Memorial Day Weekend. The collective efforts by AHRMA reps David Boydstun and John Hart, working with track owner Bob Harvill, netted a new facility located in the mountains of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation between Riverside and San Diego, and the results were excellent. Nearly 100 Post-Vintage entries showed for Saturday's event and raced under cool. beautiful conditions on the 1.4-mile circuit. spraying the loamy. decomposed granite of the fast. sweeping uphills and equally fast downhills. The course was well-groomed and cushiony. with a crowd-pleasing jump that certainly caused many a "pucker." The Grand Prix J 25cc event started off the day. Northern Califomia's J.P. Morgan edged out Scott Davis in a well·fought battle. The Historic 500cc class brought out the local old name duo of Billy Silverthorn and Gene Fetty of Baja 1000 fame. Billy looked great but could only manage a second behind a very fast Jim Row of Portland. Oregon. The track suited the horsepower of the 490cc Maicos. and Matt Itamura and Scott Brophy rode theirs to sweeps in the Expert and Intermediate 500cc GP classes, respectively. Locals Billy Silverthorn. Jon Wells and Jeff O'Brien won their respective Over 50 races. In the Over 40 classes, Dennis Spence whipped fellow Experts J.P. Morgan and Ita· mura, while Intermediate rider Jeff Clausen edged out San Diego's Brian Backer. and Novice Derrick Contreras topped the big' bores on his RM I 25. In the final race of the day, the Open Age battle. Joe Melton bested Ty Swartz and Scott Davis. Brophy came back with a 1·1 finish to bag the Intermediate laurels. Entries from I I states descended on the sacred Indian grounds of Cahuilla Creek for Sunday's AHRMA Vintage MX National. Hart. Boydstun and the staff were at it early, getting the more than 220 entries and the track in order for the fi cst of the 11 races to be held on the same fast. hilly track as Saturday's Post· Vintage event. Steve Gibson opened up the day by win· ning the first mota, only to have the tables turned later in the day by J.P. Morgan, who got the overall Sportsman 1250c Expert-class win. Meanwhile, Neil Hartman easily ran through a big field of Sportsman 250cc Novices. Tom McKinney bested the Over 40 Experts, though not without pressure from Steve Parker and Massachusetts' Robert Haag, who pushed him hard all the way. Billy Silverthorn and Gene Fetty came back after Saturday's wins to claim the Over 60 Expert and Intermediate classes, respectively. A good ride was turned in by Patrick Holmes, who came from Colorado to win the Over 50 Intermediate class. Wes Willis worked hard to clinch one of the largest classes. the Sportsman 50 Dec Intermediate class, and when it was the ladies' turn, Monica McCready turned back Ellen Roebuck in the Women's Intermediate contest. The Premier Lightweights pretty much ran uncontested, except in the Novice class, SPTSMN 1W EX: 1 Chlld Mcintosh (Trl); 2. DennIs Spence (Tn): 3 Claril. 5lnvler (Tri) ClSC 125 NOV: I. In the Open Age classes. Expert Jim Row from Portland made the trip worthwhile as he tooled his CZ home for a I· I finish. while Scott Brophy and Mark Pape topped the Inter· mediates and Novices, respectively. First-time AHRMA participant John Van Mosseveide made a great debut. pushing the Over 40 Experts real hard and later finishing second to Jim Row in the Sportsman 500cc Expert class. Chad Mcintosh was in great form and on his usual tear, winning three classes on his beautiful Rickmans, jumping the Matchless further than it should be jumped and really twisting the Triumph·s tails. His fast. aggres· sive style could only be challenged by Visalia's Dennis Spence, who dealt him a loss in the first Sportsman Twin Experts moto. In moto two. it looked like Spence could do it until mechanical woes beset his Triumph and took him off his winning pace. Mcintosh and Spence waged a great battle as they threw the "big iron" around the twisty course, showering gravel on everybody in sight. By day's end. the track was a little loose and worn - as were most of the participants. There were 35 new members, and most would agree it was a great time, a good course, a well·run event - and that it was good to have a new track in Southern California to help "end the drought.· Cahuilla Creek MX Park Anza. Four-Stroke National Amateur Days Albany Motorsports Park Rookstool, Metzler Rule! By CUlY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, MAY 24·25 While the Amateur portion of the annual Four· Stroke National Amateur Days took a back seat to Sunday's AMA Western Four·Stroke National round at Albany Motorsports Park. there were several impressive performers during the two consecutive days of racing. Riders from throughout the West were on hand, including southern Oregon speedsters Jordan Mockridge and Kevin Rookstool. The two Yamaha riders each collected a pair of overall wins on Saturday: Rookstool garnered wins in the competitive 125cc and 250cc Intermedi· ate classes, while Mockridge manhandled the competition in the Supermini and 80cc (14-16) classes. despite tough competition from Idaho's Sam DeAtley in the Supermini class and Oregon's Shawn Haberlock in the 80cc (14·16) class. Oregonians Adam Metzler and Ryan Huege also came up big throughout the weekend. Metzler trailed Rookstool in the 250cc Inter· mediate class on Saturday. but the following day, Metzler won the 1250c and 250cc Inter· mediate classes. Huege was also a consistent top finisher in several classes, his best performances coming in the Four-Stroke classes on both days. as the rider from Yamhill. Oregon. was dominant. Huege, riding a Honda CRF450R. had to deal with Guy Tow on both days of Four· Stroke·class competition, although Huege posted double-moto dominations. Shayne StrigJe was looking to spoil Tow's chances of a runner-up finish, and Strigle got around Tow in the first moto on Saturday to trail Huege at moto's end, Moto two, though, was a reversal, as Tow displaced Strigle late in the mota to net second overall, behind Huege. Strigle (2-3) and central Oregon riders Ross Miller (5·4) and Danny Costa (4·5) rounded out the top five overall. Sunday was pretty much the same, as Huege was also dominant and Tow trailed him. Miller. who made the trek from Culver. Oregon, finished third overall. While a lot of the buzz would come later in the day during the Four·Stroke National practice session, Yamaha rider Race Lacey was impressive in his dual wins. The younger brother of AMA 125cc Supercross star Ty "Tiger" Lacey, Race showed he's a definite up-and·comer by convincingly winning all four motos he entered. The 17·year-old from Wolf Creek, Oregon, first beat Nathan Whitlow and Robert Wulbrandt in the Before The Hill Junior class and then launched a similar assault for the wins. ahead of Bryson Steiner and Wulbrandt. in the 125cc Junior class. On Sunday, it was Wullbrandt's turn to dominate the two classes. Cobra· mounted Chris Alldredge was the winning 50cc performer on Saturday. notching cu~·cr: the Pee Wee (7·8) and 50cc Open·c1ass wins. The rider from Redmond. Oregon, stepped up his performances on Sunday by adding a 60cc (6·8) win to his tally. KTM rider Matthew Shirley trailed Alldredge in his Saturday wins. Mockridge had brutally tough competition en route to Saturday's Supermini and 80cc (14-16) wins. as DeAtley and Haberlock. also among the top Northwest 80cc riders, filled out the top three in both classes. DeAtley, who made the journey from Lewiston, Idaho, was second overall in the Supermini class, but Haberlock got the nod in the 80cc (14· 16) class. Mockridge didn't compete on Sunday, which was good news for the competition in both classes. This allowed DeAtley to do a similar number on the competition and take dual moto wins aboard his Suzuki. Haberlock placed second to DeAtley in both motos. but that's where the consistency ended, as Eathyn Wilson snared third overall via 6-3 finishes. Metzler and Huege split moto wins in Sunday's 250cc Intermediate class, but it was the 15·year·old Metller who netted the overall win. Though Huege won the second moto, Metzler's 1·2 finishes bettered Huege's 3·1 performances. Washington's Kenny Webster placed his Kawasaki into third overall after an impressive mota-one finish (where he trailed Metzler at the line) and backed that up with a third·place finish in mota two. Costa (5·4) and Garret Melton (4·5) rounded out the top five overall. Metzler won both 125cc Intermediate motos to cap off a two-class sweep, while DeAtley, who had recently jumped up to the 125cc ranks, finished second overall.
