Pace American Trailers 6T Series Round 2: Hallett Motor Speedway Dade City Raceway: Bradley Bernier took home the 16-24 and 2S0cclSOOcc B-class wins at round six of the Florida Motocross Series in Dade City. Florida Motocross Series Round &: Dade City Raceway Delano Shines in the Hallett Rain By SHAN MOORE Bernier's For Real By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON DADE CITY, FL, MAY 18 Bradley Bernier is for real in this 2003 season. If anyone had any doubts, those doubts would be erased after this day's race at Dade City Raceway. Bernier, a.k.a. "Doughboy," took his rolling pin and just flattened the competi!ion at round six of the fifth annual Florida Motocross Series. The others riders will be looking twice when they see this Yamaha rider. Bernier took four moto wins to top the 250cc/500cc Band 16-24 classes. The weather was a far cry from that of the opening round of the series here in March. The day was hot and sunny. The fitness factor would playa part before the end of this day. The entry count was also much better, as 270 riders tried their hands at the rough and tough course. The first class Bernier rode was the 16-24 class. Bernier made the other riders look silly while winning the first moto. Trying to keep close in second was Joey Baker. Matt Andruk kept Shawn Pettit and Brad Garritson at bay to round out the podium in third. The second mota was another win for Bernier, but this time he had company from Yamaha rider Sage Foster, who kept tabs on Bernier to the finish. It was a toss-up as to who was going to finish second overall, behind Bernier. It seemed like all the riders were having one good mota and one bad mota. Consistency paid off, though, as Pettit had another fourth-place finish to get second overall. Trey Ridgeway's third-place finish in the second moto, combined with a sixth in the first, garnered him third overall. First-round winner Matthew Pedrero rounded out the top four overall with a 7 -5 finish. Bernier rode to both moto wins in the 250cc/500cc B class while the rest of the field fought for second once again. Baker had another good first moto, finishing second, ahead of Casey Gulick and Joshua Hildebrand. Foster rounded out the top five. In the second mota, Hildebrand turned up the throttle to beat out Gulick for the runnerup spot. Foster did one better in fourth, and Corey Norvell made it into the top five. Another very fast rider on the day was motocross school instructor and former Pro racer Travis Blackburn. This Kawasaki jockey whipped the Open Money class into a frenzy, winning both motos. This class, too, was racing for second overall. The series regulars mixed it up, and Jason Dodds took second in the first mota, ahead of T.J. Fontenot. Joe 72 JUNE 25, 2003' cue I e Cape finished ahead of Pro-Action's Ronnie Monk. The Fly-sponsored Fontenot turned up the wick in the second moto, finishing second, ahead of hometown rider Monk and Dodds. Malcolm Stewart, brother of factory star Bubba, made an appearance, taking the 85cc (7 -11) class with both moto wins. Derek Hall and Jesse Freeman gave chase, finishing twothree in both motos. Robby Renner rounded out the top four with two fourths. The Supermini class was a little bit tougher for Stewart, competing against the older riders. Ricky Renner took the first moto, ahead of series leader T.J. Tiffany and Troy Davis. Hotshoe Lucas Crespi beat out Stewart for fourth. In the second moto. Ricky was nowhere to be found, and Orlando Yamaha's Tiffany went on to win. Davis and Crespi each moved up a spot. Max Rash moved up to fourth, and Stewart rounded out the top five again. There was great racing action once again in the second-largest class of the day, for the 85cc Beginners. Aiex Spade and Anthony Carreiro put their weekly battle at the front of the pack, with Spade coming out on top the first moto_ Robbie Stirling finished third, ahead of Mike Torres and lach Spagnuolo. Spade had problems in the second moto, finishing toward the back of the pack. Carreiro went on to win, and the rest of the pack went back and forth. Precision Cycle's Matthew Esola moved up to second, and Trevor Paschal put his Performance Honda in third. Chris Fischetti redeemed himself after a DNS in the first mota by placing fourth, and Spagnuoio played it safe in fifth. Four riders in the Youth/Big Wheel (12-15) class renewed their battle, and, as always, the racing was fast and furious. Dean Dyess came out on top with a 1-1 score. The other three Brandon Abell, D.C. Clark and Jonathan Camp - finished in that order both times out. In the I 25cc B class, Camp beat them to the checkers in both motos. Abell finished runnerup again, ahead of Dyess, each time out. Clark was relegated to fourth overall with a 4-5 score_ HALLETT, OK, MAY 24 GSX-R600-mounted Mark Delano, in his firstever rain event, made an impressive comefrom-behind ride to take the overall win in the GTO/GTU division at round two of the Pace American Trailers GT Series in Hallett, Okla· homa. The event, held in conjunction with round four of the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association's regional series, was run in a driving rainstorm that made visibility a problem and keeping it on two wheels a primary concern. In the rain, Delano was smooth and consistent but hard on the brakes, as he gated nearly last but picked off all of his rivals one by one to take the overall win, gaining most of his advantage while on the binders. Delano who chose to run his stock 600cc machine over his race bike, deciding the stocker might be a little smoother in the adverse conditions started the event from row 12, but a muffed start left him near the back. "They were supposed to run a two-wave start," said Delano, "but when they threw the green flag, half the second wave took off, so I ended up in the back of all of 'em." In contrast, Logan Young. who started on the fifth row. got a fantastic start, getting up next to Michael Sanchez and taking him on the inside going into turn three. Lap one saw Marcus McBain in front on a Suzuki GSX-R1000, foliowed by Young, Chris Headiey, Sanchez, John Ross and Harry Tomlinson. "This was the first time I've ever raced in the rain," added Delano. "i was kind of takin' it easy 'in the corners to keep it on two wheels, then just usin' the brakes and the gas. I just tried to keep it smooth and consistent and tried to keep it on two wheels and finish. I was gaining most of my gaps on the brakes. I had some Rain-X on my visor, so it kept the rain off. but I couldn't keep it from fogging up_ On all the little straightaways, I had to reach up and hold my visor up to get it to unfog, then just let go, grab some brake and turn. About the time you would get through the turn, it would start to fog up again. I tried to hold it up about halfway, but it was ioose and wouldn't stay there, so I was fightin' with that." By lap four, McBain and Young were up front and close enough to each other to throw a blanket over them. Two seconds back was Headiey, foHowed by Sanchez, and Delano quickly joined this group. Another four seconds back came Ross and Tomlinson. On lap five, Young took the lead going up the hiil coming out of the fast right-hander known as "The Bitch." On that same lap, Sanchez got around Headley going into turn three. Dade City Raceway Dade City, Florida Results, May 18, 2003 (Round 6 of 141 51 OIL-INJ: l. Christopher &lIter (~): 2.
