By lap seven, Young had stretched out a three-second gap over McBain, with Sanchez closing. Headley was fourth. with Delano in fifth. On the next lap, Delano passed Headley going up the inside of tum three and set his sights on the front three. On that same lap, Matthew Wise went down hard coming out of tum three, bringing out a caution flag. It was a matter of too much followed by not enough, as the rear wheel stepped out and then stood up and spit him off, sending him to the hospital with a broken collarbone. On lap nine, Delano disposed of Sanchez and was gaining on McBain, overtaking him one lap later. With two laps to go, Delano passed Young on the brakes going into turn two to take the lead. and he cruised home for the win. '" didn't even know he was back there," said Young of Delano's pass. "All of a sudden he just came by me, and I thought, 'Wow, where did that guy come from?' I figured I'd stay with him until the last lap and get by him, but they threw the checkers instead of a white nag: Young held on for second, followed by Sanchez in third overall. The track had been changed since the last Wild West race, and temperatures were unseasonably warm· in the 90-degree~plus range· so the racers were in for a challenging day. Riders were able to test themselves on a track that will host the Four·Stroke Nationals later in the year. Cole Seibler and Daniel Johnson proved they could handle the heat, as they prevailed in their respective classes. Taylor Monroe powered to the early lead in the 60cc Open class, as Keagan Elsberry and Sterling Ritcheson followed. Monroe had no problems and took an easy win. but Tai Barry· more was moving up from the pack, and he caught Ritcheson on the last lap for a thirdplace finish. Elsberry held on for second. Barrymore started the second mota in the lead and was trying to hold off a fastapproaching Monroe. but Monroe was on the throttle, and he passed Barrymore for the lead. Barrymore held off Ritcheson for second as the race drew to a close. Zane Trivett absconded with the holeshot in the first 125cc Intermediate moto, with Lyle Almond and Joel Barnowski on his tail. Almond was able to get by Trivett by the end of the first lap, and Trivett then found it tough holding off a strong field. With Almond leading, the action was all behind him. Johnson and Beni Williams were making passes to work their way up to the leaders. Barnowski got by Almond and was now holding the lead, but Johnson and Williams were still moving up. Johnson got by Almond for second. Barnowski was able to hold off Johnson for the win, and Williams got by Almond to take third. Bill Kody grabbed the early lead in moto two, as Barnowski and Johnson followed. Johnson managed to get by Bamowski by the third lap, and then he started to pressure Kody for the lead. Kody fought hard, but on the last lap Johnson was able to get by for the win. Johnson took the overall with a 2- I tally, Bamowski (I ·3) was second, and Kody (8-2) grabbed third. Kip Posey snatched the holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto, but it was short-lived, as Seibler took over the lead as they headed through the whoops. Seibler was on his game, and he stretched his lead. while Posey was left to hold off the rest of the charging pack. Pete Roberts charged through the whoops and caught Posey in the next corner to take second. Riding in the Pro class as an Amateur, Levi Jensen put in a good effort, as he was able to catch and pass Posey, and he ended up finishing third on the track and first as a 250cc Intermediate A rider. Richie Kaumo kept pressing Chad Wallwork, and he was finally able to pass Wallwork on the last lap to take fourth. Posey again put his 450cc Honda in the early lead in moto two. However. Seibler was again able to make a quick pass in the whoops, and he ran away for the win. In this moto. however. Posey hung tough; Roberts got by Posey, but then Roberts made a miscue in the whoops on the last lap, and Posey was able to get by to steal second from him. Kaumo was once again making some late· race moves, and he overtook David Panzer on the last lap to finish fourth. Jensen showed he could compete with the Pros, as the 250cc Amateur rider finished in between Seibler and Posey to take first in his class. Owyhee Motorcycle Clubgrounds Boise. KTM rider Payne Jones was on the gas, but breathing down his neck was Micah Williams. When all was said and done, 8-year-old Jones walked away with first win, with an eight·second lead on second-placed Williams. Rowland flew right in behind Williams with an impressive third· place finish. Honda rider Stephen Nicholas, still in his first year of racing, took fourth place with a mere one-second lead on fifth-placed Zachary Stuckey, on a KTM. The Kids Intermediate and Vet classes raced two laps on a 2.5-mile loop around a section of the adults' enduro trail. Now, this trail was tough! These kids got a taste of the actual enduro trail laid out for the adult riders, and boy, was it muddyl Ten-year-old Carter lapped several riders and held on to win, putting a four-minute lead on second· placed Jordyn DuBose, on a Suzuki. On DuBose's tail was KTM rider Chandler Rowland, only one minute and 34 seconds behind him. After· ward. Carter thanked his dad, Landon Carter, for his help at the races and said he had lots of fun, although the trail was extremely muddy. Carter lined up again to race with the older Vet Kids class for another drilling round. Thir· teen·year·old Suzuki jockey Chris McMillan had one heck of a race, putting a 37-second lead on Cook during the first lap. After taking the win, McMillan thanked Adam's Motor Sports and his family for their great sponsor· ship. Cook finished the 5-mile course in an awesome 22 minutes and 14 seconds. fol· lowed by third-placed Eric Bowen, on a Kawasaki. The Clanton club members put on an "A· plus" kids' event. There was lots of help on the trail. everyone got a trophy, and everyone got their fill of racing! All kids are winners in the SERA Kids Series. Round six will be the Train Robbers Enduro in Bismarck, Arkansas. on June 8. Get set for more kids' mud· slinging action! By CAROLYN REED AND CHARAY Do BOSE CLANTON, AL, MAY 24 The Clanton Track and Trail Enduro Club hosted round five of the SERA Kids Series, the 10th annual Hillbilly Classic Enduro. In the heart of hillbilly country, 35 youngsters lined up to put on a show for the spectators eager for some action in Clanton, Alabama. Those who have ever been to the SERA Kids' races already know that several of these young Speedy Gonzaleses are making quite a name for themselves. Previously, at the Sandblasters Enduro on May 3, Kawasaki jockey Spencer Cook, Suzuki pilot Tyler Carter, KTM rider Hunter Rowland and Yamaha-mounted Bren· nen Reed all walked away with the gold in their respective classes, and they were deter· mined to do so again. However, these SERA Kids classes have just as much fierce compe· tition as the adults have on the following day. They take their riding as fun, but very serious fun. Usually, the kids race up a trail behind sign-up and then into the light woods and down a power line. However, after 16 inches of rain, the decision was made to make that trail part of the adult event, and the little ones raced clear on the other side of the field, on an excellent half-mile loop of freshly cut trail. With only one race under their belts, Kawasaki jockeys Ty Roberts and Cody Franklin were both new to this trail. They got to battle it out with Reed and Trent Whisenant in the Beginner Pee Wee class. Reed led them down the first of their four laps of the half·mile trail. The little guys raced over roots and rocks, up and down the slick and semimuddy tight woods. Six·year-old Reed new into the finish after lapping everyone but Whisenant and notched his fourth win out of five rounds this year. "I'm glad Trent's daddy caught me after I hit a really big root: Reed recounted, "and he kept me from crashing really bad." Whisenant placed second, and Roberts did an awesome job, winning third. Next in line and ready to show their stuff were the Pee Wee racers. Eleven riders lined up and blasted off into the woods to race four laps of the same loop. Rowland kept the lead on his competition, as huge crowds gathered to watch the kids passing one another at every turn. Rowland crashed badly at the top of a rooted hill and, surprisingly, jumped up and tried to take off again. However, he had prob- Hillbilly Classic Enduro Clanton.
