down and passed him around the outside on the second lap and pulled a few bikelengths ahead. Hawk also chased down Anderson, and on the last lap he drove it in deep into the last tum and then came off the comer along· side him on the inside, but he was short by a couple of feet, finishing third. Elliot Oquist came away the winner of the 250cc Modified main event. Jumping into the lead right from the start, he pulled away to win with more than a straightaway lead over Tyler Clark, who sneaked underneath Chris Celone for second. Scott Baker was the early leader in the 85cc Modified main event, with Jacob Lehmann trying to get by for the win. Baker, however, slid out oming into turn three, bringing out the red flag. Baker didn't make the restart. Lehmann jumped into the lead and started to distance himself from the field of eocc riders. However, Evan Aronson was on the move, and he eventually got around Chris Williams for second, and then he started to make up ground on Lehmann. Aronson soon found himself parked right on Lehmann's rear wheel; trying to make a move, he pulled up along side of Lehmann over the finish, but he didn't have enough for the win. Lehmann won it, with Aronson second. Williams held on to finish third. Resuhs so SR: I. Wyatt Anderson: 2. Brock Just. 50 OPEN: I. Wyatt Anderson. XR70 BEG: I. Nicole Reynolds. 60 BEG: I. New Hampshire International Speedway CEDAR RAPIDS, lA, MAY 17 Todd Walton rolled to wins in the I 25cc A, 250cc A and Over 25 A classes, looking very comfortable on the redesigned Hawkeye Downs Motocross track in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was the second consecutive race at the track in which Walton won all three classes. "I did it last race here, too: Walton said. "It helps, being in shape for once. I've never real· Iy been in shape, and losing 45 pounds made a difference, too. I'm just stoked. So far. the worsll've done this year is third. I just love rid· ing right now. If I could ride five classes, f'd ride five classes." Ryan Poulter got the holeshot in the 250cc A heat race. Walton quickly passed Poulter for the lead on lap one and pulled away for the win. Poulter finished second, followed by Ryan Sindt and Chad Leidigh. In the 250cc A main event, Walton got the holeshot and garnered a big early lead coming out of the first turn by clearing a tabletop that nobody else attempted. Greg Braet and Sindt followed. Walton continued to build on his lead. By the third lap, Braet was pulling away from Leidigh, who was now in third. Walton continued to cruise to the checkered flag. Braet finished a strong second. followed by Leidigh. The usually very competitive Austin Raubs had a rough night, finishing fourth; Raubs recently lost his sponsorship and race bikes. and he was forced to race his practice bike, a Suzuki RM250. "I just got this Suzuki put together," Raubs said. "It was my parts bike when I lost my ride. I got to the track today, and all the spokes were loose on the rear wheel and they were all seized up, so we had to run back into town and get a spare. I was just not comfortable on the bike all day. I got pumped up from the time the gate dropped." Walton's only loss of the night came in the 125cc A heat. Poulter grabbed another 94 holeshot and held Walton off the entire race for the win. Braet crossed the finish line in third, in front of Raubs, who looked much more comfortable on a borrowed KTM 125. Braet got the early lead, in front of Walton. in the I 25cc main. Braet led most of the first lap until Walton got a little more push out of a corner and passed Braet in the air over a tabletop. Walton pulled away on lap two. Braet ran second until the third lap, when Raubs passed him. Raubs was still getting used to the borrowed KTM but seemed to be getting faster every lap. Raubs closed on Walton, but it was too little too late, as Walton held on for the win. Raubs was second, with Braet third. "He closed for a lap, and I thought it was actually Poulter at first: Walton said about Raubs. "I picked it back up and pulled away a little bit. I was just out there, riding my own pace." eye I e Greenwood Makes It Two in a Row By THOMAS BARRY LOUDON. NH, MAY 17-18 With the SV650 now i.n its fifth year of production, the lightweight Supersport class at Loudon has become the "SV Race." All 19 Expert entries showed up on the grid aboard the little Suzuki. Fortunately, this provides some very close racing, and at this SV race, the battle for the lead couldn't have been closer. John Donald. who won the class championship last year by one point, grabbed the lead at the start. with Ted Temple. Rick Ducette and Brian Obara nipping at his heels. Ducette quickly passed Temple over the turnfour hill, taking second place going into the banking in tum six. Obara also found his way around Temple in the back field, coming out in front of Temple as they re-entered the NASCAR oval at turn 10. A favorite spot to pass on the NHIS road course is the tight tum three. Heading straight into a wall of old, hard race-car tires makes for some great braking wars, and this race proved to be just that. lap after lap, going into turn three. Ducette tried to come up on the inside of Donald there, but Donald kept his line and turned in, forcing Ducette to back off. A carbon copy of that move was made on tap four. with the same results. After failing twice on the inside, Ducette made an attempt at the outside line into turn three on the fifth lap, to no avail. The next time around, the two were separated by less than a bikelength all around the course. Donald then put his head down and turned out his best lap time of J: 18.9 on the last lap to take the win by 0.3 seconds. Jeff Wood grabbed the holeshot in the Dash For Cash race on Saturday. followed by the weekend's fastest lap holder (at 1;12.8), n e vv s Scott Greenwood, and with Jim Lester, Brian Kent and Des Conboy right behind. Greenwood wasted no time getting by Wood in the back field on the first lap. While the front two immediately started to pull the field, the battle for third began to take shape. Kent slipped by Lester on lap two, but Lester came back strong to regain second on the inside of tum three. For the next two laps, the two continued to battle, allowing Conboy to reel them in. The three riders began swapping positions all around the track. By lap five, Kent had dropped out of the race. but he was quickly replaced by Carlo Gagliardo, who made a strong charge toward the front, passing Lester and Conboy over the next two laps. On lap seven. Conboy came into tum three hard, the back end slipping side to side, and he was outgunned by Gagliardo on the way out. The race was red-flagged a lap later due to a downed rider on the course, so the running order became the finishing order; Greenwood took home the $500 for the second weekend in a row, followed by Wood, Gagliardo, Conboy and Lester. Dickeyville Hillclimb Cipala's King of the Hill By BOD NORTHROP DICKEYVlu.E, WI. MAY 18 Wilwert's Event Promotions of Dubuque, Iowa, held its first hillclimb of the season on its rocky, 500-foot hill just outside of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, draWing nearly 140 of the best hillclimbers in the country· many of whom wanted to experience the hill in preparation for rid· ing the same venue for the 2003 National Hillclimb Championships. This climb, however, was a Semi·Pro event for 600cc-and-bigger bikes. Todd Cipala, a multiple-time National Champion, was the big winner of the day, posting wins in three classes and also taking the Fast Time of the Day award. Cipala's first win came in the 600cc Novice class (Cipala's a Novice ... ?) on his KX500, and he had to come from behind to do it. Michigan's Adam Doublestein set the best time on his first ride with an excellent 11.19second run, with his traveling companion Tim Havercroft running second with a 11.38·secand time. With Eric Donaldson posting a 11.87 -second time, Cipala found himself in fourth place at the break with a comparatively "slow" 12.02 seconds. However, in the second round, Cipala flew his Kawasaki over the breaker at the bottom and unleashed a straight and fast 10.49-second run to take the class lead. Donaldson also improved his time with a fine 10.79-second run, and Nebraska's Ernie Beckwith slipped into third with a 11.09second run after crashing on his first ride. It looked like Cipala was also going to claim the 750cc Novice win. nailing a good 11.34-second time on his Kawasaki to take the first-round lead. followed by Kaleb Northrup and his Triple Kaw with a 12.02-second run. In second-round action, however, Northrup sailed his screaming triple hard off the breaker and landed straight, continuing on for a class-leading 11.1 O-second time. Cipala answered with a fistful of throttle, but he didn't get a clean jump off the breaker, and when his triple wheelied at the 350-foot marker, he had to briefly shut down to save the ride, losing his chance to catch Northrup. Cipala's day was far from over, however, because after taking a third in the 600cc FourStroke class, he still had his big, beautiful and bad Harley to run in the Open class. The fast time so far had been his own 11.34·second time on his 750cc triple, and he eclipsed that with an incredible 1O.18·second, wheel-stand· ing run on his first ride on the Harley - a time no other rider would better all day. In the King Of The Hill shootout class (featuring the 10 fastest riders of the day), Harold Waddell flew his big Suzuki over the top in a sizzling 10.21 seconds to post a daunting
