Clements Rodeo Grounds: Jimmy Lewis (12) had a night to remember in Clements, California, winning both the Open A and Pro-Am heats and mains. Mark Corsetti (2) finished both mains in the second spot. lace worked this track hard from corner to corner. Fang was first to the checkers. Danielle Caldeira won the 100cc Stock Youth class, while Joseph Jaconetti was first in the 100cc Modified class and third in the 100cc Stock C class. Randy Brunelli was first in the 100cc C class, while Dave Keil took Glen Helen Raceway Park Martell, Cheever Overachievers at REMMX second. Michael Crump got two pieces of brass on this night, winning the Vintage B contest and following John McCoy to the checkers in the Open B class. Donald Firanzi of KLH Racing Presents easily won the Vet B and Over 40 B classes. Stewart Barber Jr. was followed to the checkers by McCoy in the 250cc event. John Proto beat Steve Hall and Robert McDonnell in the Over 40 A class. Mike Rush, a C-c1ass rider, is too young to ride the Vet classes, but in the Open C and Vintage Singles C classes, he's one of this season's hottest riders, winning week after week, and this week was no exception. Mike Besemer won the Vet A class. Greg Riddle took the top spot from the start of the exciting Knobby contest aboard his Honda 450, with Justin Felice on his back tire, trying every which way to get by. Riddle didn't give an inch. Coming out of turn four on the last lap, Riddle went high while Felice went low, passing a lapper. It was Riddle on top across the finish line for the second week in a row. Jimmy Lewis, who is backed by Laser, P£,D Promotions, Performance Cycles, Sand· hill Ranch, NSN, and Rod Lake Racing, had a night to remember. After winning both the Pro-Am and Open A heat races against some of this area's top riders, Lewis won both main events. In the Pro-Am, Lewis, Mark Corsetti and Kevin Bricker battled to the first turn. Corsetti and Bricker switched spots a couple of times, but it finished like it started. The Open A main was more exciting, with three restarts. Lewis had a hard time getting off the line in the first start; Thomas Carriger got the holeshot in that one. But the second and third starts saw Lewis at the front of the pack going into turn one, followed by Corsetti and the other 10 riders. Lewis rode in the lead to the finish. By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 17 After a couple of weeks' layoff while the AMA National was in town, Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday motocross got back into action with a newly designed track and perfect riding weather. The new track lay· out is nice and wide, which provides plenty of racing room, and it was given rave reviews by racers and spectators alike. Also special about this week's meeting was the announcement of the winners for the just· concluded fifth annual MTA West Spring series, and the awarding of many great prizes. Promoter Frank Thomason thanked all of REM's regular and series supporters· particularly MTA West, which contributed literally truckloads of awards - including Light Speed, Renthal, N·Style, Wiseco, Cometic, One Industries, KTM, White Brothers, Smith, Pro Circuit, VP Fuels, No Fear. Motoman, Motul, and Klotz. Yamaha YZ250-mounted Craig Cheever topped the 250cc Beginner class with a pair of fine rides. In the first mota, Tom Hinz took the checkered nag first, followed by Cheever and Bret Freeman. In the second go·around, Cheever took the holeshot and never looked back as he took the mota win in convincing fashion. Ross Monreal rolled in second, while Results 65 BEG: I. Frozen Ocean Moto-)( Park Carpenter Rollercoasters to the Win c: Glen Helen Raceway Park: Mike Martell (24) was the overall Vet Beginner winner as REM resumed racing in San Bernardino, California. AUBURN, NY, MAY 17 Frozen Ocean Motocross Park raised the bar again for motocross promotion in central New York State with its newly designed track, unveiled at round one of its Night MX Series. With 269 riders taking to the new track configuration in front of another huge crowd of motorcycle· racing fanatics, the action was awesome all night long. Also new this year is the scoring format: Now both motos count toward an overall finish. Frozen Ocean has long been a lightning rod for thunderous races saturated with lightning-fast riders, and this night was no excepw tion. The loudest thunder rolled from local rid· ing phenom and National Four-Stroke Champion Paul Carpenter, who cracked the air aboard his White Brothers·sponsored Honda. Another local lightning-fast riding sensation and longtime nationally ranked rider, Bruce Stratton, supercharged the Saturday night air aboard his own Honda, sponsored by Arkport Cycles. Sprinkle in other talent such as Brian Austin, Sam Holland, Joseph Rose, Corey Kandefer, Gaylon Dickson, Sonny Nighman and a slew of other great riders, and the action was bound to explode. In the first 250cc-and·Up Expert moto, Mike Leavitt stormed to the holeshot, with cue I Carpenter, Stratton. Holland, Thomas Scott· Smith Jr. and Dickson in hot pursuit. Carpenter cracked the throttle on his Honda wide open and streaked into the lead coming out of turn two. Holland and Stratton were locked in a long, bar·to·bar combat for third. When Leavitt lost it and went down cornering, Car· penter took the lead. Carpenter was laying down incredibly fast 54·second lap times, but as the track got roughed up, Stratton was get· ting faster, and so was Holland. Carpenter took the win with a decent lead over Holland, who made a last-corner pass on Stratton for second. Dickson hung on for fourth, Nighman grabbed fifth, and Kandefer worked his way up to sixth. ., Mota two was a shot in the dark - literally, as the start had to be waved off when an elec· trical gremlin temporarily knocked a couple of lights out of service. After re-racking the 250cc-and-Up Expert class and re-cueing the track announcer, Thomas "Sir Talks-A-Lot" Threadgill, it was Stratton's turn to shine; his lightning-fast reaction time helped him claim the holeshot (and cash reward), over John Young, Carpenter, Holland and Kandefer. The track had devel· oped some extreme grooves. but it was so wide and loaded with variable lines that Stratton was able to use every piece of loamy terra firma to lead the first several laps. Carpenter seemed to favor the deepest grooves, as he whaled on them like some test pilot pulling several Gs rocketing through them. Stratton held the lead from the holeshot to the final corner of the final lap, when Carpenter roller· coastered his big red Honda out front to take the win by a bikelength in a Kodak moment for the ages. Carpenter (1· 1) took first overall, Stratton (3-2) seized second overall, and Hoiland (2-3) settled for third overall. Brian Austin's hard work paid off with fourth overall on a 7-5 score, and Corey Kandefer was fifth overall. Results OPEN P/W: I. Jade Repass (Vllm): 2. Matt Zachar (Yam): 3. Dana lampatorl (Cob): 4. Freeman was again third. On the day, the first· place brass went to Cheever by virtue of his 2·1 score. Monreal's strong second mota and 4-2 overall rides were good for the runner·up position, while Freeman's consistent 3-3 tally placed him third for the day. In Vet Beginner action, Mike Martell piloted his CRF450R to the overall class win. In the first moto, Martell ripped the holes hot and rode the entire race without making a mistake for the win. KTM rider Gary Taylor took a well· deserved second place aboard his SX200, while the "Racing Dentist," John "Pain-Free" Tookey, rode in third. In the second stanza, Stephen Gerber took the win after having a rough go of it in the first mota. Martell followed him across the line for a close second, while Taylor came across the line in third. On the day, Martell was the overall class winner via his 1·2 rides. Taylor (2-3) was next best, and Gerber's excellent second moto allowed him to salvage third with a 7-1 tally. In the Pro class, Yamahaffroy Lee-backed Steven Haughelstine took the first·moto win, while Willy Musgrave nipped at his heels all moto and eventually took second. Mark Brooks rolled in third. In the second mota, Haughelstine was involved in a nasty crash on the first lap that took him out of action for the rest of the day and resulted in a red flag. On the restart, Musgrave shot out front and went uncontested for the win. Paul Kellen was second, with Brooks third. The overall winner was Musgrave (2-1). Kellen (3-2) was second, and Brooks (2-3) was third. e Halbert, Ragsdale, Hawk Thrash Yakima By SAM HALBERT YAKIMA, WA, MAY 17 Kyle Ragsdale put his Honda 450 out front at the start of the 505cc Money main event, with Sam Halbert and Ryan Anderson giving chase. On the fifth lap, Halbert slipped under Rags· dale coming off of turn four and took the lead, but Ragsdale didn't give up . on the last lap, he stuck it under Halbert through turns three and four. It was a drag race to the finish, but Halbert ended up too far on the outside and crashed into the wall a few feet short of the finish line. Ragsdale took the win, Anderson inherited second, and Dan Adkins was bumped up into the top three. Ragsdale pulled off another holeshot in the Expert/Pro Sport class, with Jethro Halbert and Kurt Hawk right behind him. Hawk worked his way into the lead by the time they finished lap one. Then Jethro began to set up Ragsdale for second, and he made the pass two laps later. Hawk took the win, ahead of Jethro and Ragsdale. Anderson got the holeshot at the start of the Open Money final, but Jethro tracked him n e vv s JUNE 18. 2003 93
