California Racing Club Ounestown Series Round 4: Los Angeles County Raceway (Left) Starts like this helped Tanner Langham (31) win both 125cc Novice motos at round four of the Califomia Racing Club Dunestown Series. IRight) Michael Leib was runner-up in the 65cc 19-111 class and won the 85cc 17-111 class in Palmdale, Califomia. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, MAY 25 1;7 hirteen-year-old Tanner Langham I.l can usually be counted on for a top-five overall finish in California Racing Club's 125cc Novice class. Consistently good starts keep Langham toward the front of the pack, with his stronger second moto finishes being his forte. During round four of the 26th annual Riders' Choicesponsored J.B. Memorial Dunestown Series, held at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale, everything seemed to fall into place, as he easily went 1-1 for the overall honors. YZ250F-mounted Jess Drake won the drag race to the first turn to get things under way in the opening 125cc Novice moto, with Langham settling into second place, ahead of Austin Ingalls, Tony Prince, Ricky Barger and the rest of the field. Langham shadowed Drake's every move for a lap before stealing away the top spot, and Ingalls dropped Drake back to third a lap later. Langham could do no wrong on the jump-laden J.B. Memorial Track, as he motored away uncontested for the win. Second place went to Ingalls, with Barger climbing up into the third-place slot at the checkers, over Drake and Chad Abbott. Langham bolted out of the gate in moto two to grab the early lead, with Barger, Drake and Bill Smith giving chase. Smith was around Barger after a lap, but he wasn't having much success in reeling in Langham. At the midway point, Langham had five seconds on Smith, and he would more than double that margin by the checkers for a seemingly easy 1-1 72 JUNE 18, 2003' cue I e sweep aboard his Renthal/RG3/ Saugus Kawasaki/EVS/ Appliedbacked KX 125. Smith finished second, with Barger allover his back fender, going 3-3 for second overall. Ingalls held off Abbott, Anatol Kozlowski and Adam Lane at the line to go 2-4 for third in the final standings, over the 7-2 tally of Smith. Drew Gosselaar went wire to wire for the first 85cc (12-13) moto win. Team Green's Trent Pugmire worked his way around Topher Ingalls early in the race to finish a few seconds behind Gosselaar. Moto two was a duplicate of the first, with Gosselaar absconding with the holeshot while Pugmire again worked his way past Ingalls. Pugmire caught Gosselaar but didn't quite have that little extra something to make the pass and had to settle for a 2-2 day. Ingalls went 3-3 for third, over the 5-6 efforts of Taylor Kellstrom and the 9-4 score of Adas Bakchis. Gosselaar returned to run away with both Supermini motos on his Suzuki Sport/Axo/N-Style/Dunlop-sponsored RM85. Powerhousebacked Ingalls collected the secondplace trophy on a 2-2 tally, topping the 4-3 score of Kellstrom and the 34 finishes of Tyler Sjoberg. Chris Plouffe and Michael Leib have been going at it over the lead in both the 65cc (9-11) and 85cc (7 -11) classes throughout this series. On this day, Plouffe topped Leib in both 65cc motos; Leib returned the favor by sweeping the 85cc class. Alex Laughlin went 3-3 in the 65cc ranks, and Keith Robinson did the same in the 85cc class. The first 125cc Beginner moto was a Mike McCarron affair, as he turned a good start into a runaway victory. n e vv s Gabe Valente and Andrew Janes took turns holding down the runner-up position until crashes dropped them out of contention. Broc Stewart overcame a bad start to eventually finish in second place, ahead of Shane Simons and Chris Cordos. Stewart got a much better start in moto two and was challenging McCarron for the top spot within a lap. McCarron kept Stewart at bay for the enti re moto for a well -deserved overall win. Third overall belonged to Simons (3-4), with Cordos (4-5) and Rory Hofstatter (5-7) earning fourth and fifth, respectively. Sherri Cruse disappeared with the opening-moto victory in the Women's class, letting everyone else hash it out over second place. Chelsea Candido got the job done, while Tara Neitzel put a last-lap pass on Shana Rhinehart for third. Candido put her CR85 into the point position at the drop of the gate in moto two and was soon joined by Cruse, who hounded Candido throughout the race and finally made the pass on the white-flag lap for a perfect 1-1 showing on her YB Normal Designs/O'Neal-backed Honda. It was a close race for third, with Neitzel again edging out Rhinehart. Samantha Steffens rounded out the top five with a 5-5 score.
