Barry Benkert, Boogieshoes, Dancing in the Hurricane BREAUX BRIDGE, LA, MAY 24-25 Riders from four states competed at this twoday event in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, to qualify for the NMA Grand National Championships held annually in Ponca City, Oklahoma. On Saturday, the minibikes and Schoolboy classes raced, followed by Sunday's big-bike classes, Coy "Boogieshoes" Hobgood from Slaughter, Louisiana, was a double-moto victor in the 250cc Money class on his KTM 520, He checked out in both molos, never relinquish· ing the lead, Michael Clement showed flashes of his old speed and finished a solid second, New Iberia's Corey Romero is coming out from under the shadow of his brother, former Plano Honda Amateur team rider Chase Romero; Corey not only took third in the 250cc Money class, he won the Open Ama· teur event virtually unchallenged. Local Pro Jamie Ellis, on a borrowed bike, could do no better than fourth. He also teaches motocross classes for Racer's Edge during the week at this track. Ellis watched his amateur students with interest from the tower, In his first mota, he kept running into tires, getting caught in two different ruts, losing his lines, and even stalling in one turn. "I had dirt bouncin' around in my goggles and couldn't see," he explained later. "My eyes were so full of dirt, I couldn't close them," Hobgood also won the first 125cc Money mota. However, he couldn't catch Mobile, 3515 Stony Hollow Road Dayton, Ohjo Phone: 937/263-9321 Website: wwu1.dayto'lfflc.conr Regional Ponca City Qualifier Hurricane Alley Mid-Year Championship Hurricane Alley Motocross Track Bv Rov JENKINS Devil's Staircase Hillclimb Alabama's Ronnie Ramiscal in the second moto. The Honda-mounted Ramiscal usually shows up in Louisiana and Mississippi to can· lest big-money races and supercrosses. Ramiscal looked sluggish in the first mota but turned on the juice for the second mota, winning in convincing fashion. Up-and-coming Chad McNemar from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, finished third on his Yamaha. The 16·year-old showed impressive stamina, finishing the last laps faster than his earlier laps and "styling" his air time all the way to the checkers. In moto two, he kept an even distance between himself and Hobgood behind him in third and Ramiscal in front. The 20-year-old Hobgood could never get closer than six seconds to McNemar after the second lap, Hobgood was asked why he didn't win the 125cc class overall. "That 125 couldn't pull my fat butt around the track like that 520: Hobgood responded. The 125cc Novice class was generously sprinkled with riders from Texas seeking to qualify for Ponca, Texan Colby Kreft won overall. Tee Hebert, who won Saturday's Schoolboy class, could only climb to second place after some midpack starts. One rider to watch in the Senior class is Galvez, Louisiana's Mac Edmonston. His Honda seized up, so he borrowed a bike someone else didn't want to ride due to suspension settings. When Edmonston wasn't picking himself up off the ground, he was challenging Randy Fairbum, who placed second overall. Edmonston has only been racing about a year, but he raced at Ponca City's championship race last year. Discipline: Hitlclimb. Schedule: October 12, 2003 (Only open one time per year). Directions: From Waynesville, Ohio, travel one mile south on Route 42 and follow the signs to Oregonia and the Hill. Clubs: The Hiliclimb is sponsored by the Dayton Motorcycle Club. "The Dayton Motorcycle Club was founded in 1910, making it one of the oldest clubs In the country. Its purpose is to help promote the sport of motorcycling, defend and protect the rights of motorcyclists, and lend a helping hand to motorcyclists when.ever possible ~ and also to create a pleasant and endUring social bond and friendship among its members. .. ~ Dayton Motorcycle Club website - In the resurgent Powder Puff class, Staci Brown won both motos, just ahead of Samantha Mouton. Lindsey Escoyne overcame poor starts to finish third but didn't quite have the speed to challenge the two leaders. There was some dust despite promoter Mike Shea's hard work between motos, when he harrowed and watered the whole track. This was in addition to the sprinkler system that was turned on for about 15 minutes after the first moto. Overall, however, the clay/sand/dirt/sawdust composite held up throughout the race. In Saturday's mini races, Jon Murry-Barr won the 50cc (7-8) and Pee Wee Open (4-8) events on his Polini. He started near the front and stretched his lead each moto. His closest competitor, Ezra Angelle, finished a solid second on his KTM. Hunter Foreman finished just ahead of Barr's teammate Janson Gaspard to take third, and that's exactly how they finished in both classes. Saturday's best races happened when Derrick Ronsonet and Jeremy Domingue got on the track at the same time. Like two unstable compounds, whenever they mixed, there was a five-lap explosion! Whether it was in the pit~ bike class, the Super Junior Open (7-11) or the 65cc (9-11) contests, these two racers provided speedy entertainment. Only in the 65cc (9-j I) class did Lance Vincent spoil Domingue's show by winning the overall. Domingue won the other two classes, though. His little brother Brock won the 50ce Oil· Injected (4-6) class, Hurricane Alley Motocross Track Breaux Bridge. Grange Motor Circuit A Senior Stock ··Senior Moment" Bv ROD GIRARD APPLE VALLEY, CA, MAY 13 The newly built Grange Motor Circuit played host to the May gathering of the California Motorcycle Road Race Association under blue skies after rain dampened Saturday's practice. Although the Senior Stock contests have never been known as barn-burners, they have been known to have their moments. Race one started off typically, with Tommy Crawford grabbing his patented holeshot, and with Nick Tierno and perennial favorite Leonard Mellgren giving chase, It didn't take long for Mellgren to work his way into the lead, as Tierno and Crawford both faded. Looking increasingly strong toward the end of the race, Thom Boswell moved up quickly, closing on Mellgren and taking second. Tierno cleaned up in third, while Crawford fell back to fourth, With his late-race charge still fresh in his mind, Boswell was fired up for race two. Crawford was again qUickest off the line, taking a strong lead, with Tierno in second and an energized Boswell on the move in third. Taking over at the point by lap three, Boswell was in rare form. With the crossed flags out, Boswell roared across the stripe, and in the excitement of what can only be called a "senior moment," he raised his arms above his head victoriously, Unfortunately. crossed flags do not a victor make. Equally unfortunate for Boswell, the stunned field was quick to recover. Finishing the rm:e in obvious disbelief, Boswell could do no better than third. Crawford took the win, with Tierno moving into second, and Mellgren finished an uncharacteristic fourth, In a final twist, all four riders tallied identical point scores. The overall was then decided by the order of race two's finish. Damian Saavedra, "Mr. Over-Exuberant," returned after a prolonged absence due to injuries to terrorize the Expert and Veteran Stock classes. In Veteran Stock competition, nu'ftls JUNE 18, 2003 91
