MAY 24-25 The Hartford Fairgrounds horse track in Croton once again served up some rather harsh racing conditions for the motorcycle cowboys of the Ohio Pro-Am Series. On Saturday, the riders had to deal with a soft track and very dusty conditions. On Sunday. the dust settled, but the ruts intensified, leading to another rough-and-tumble afternoon of racing at Croton. When the going gets rough. sometimes the tough tumble, as was the case again this weekend. Among the crashers was former quad racer Wayne Ward, who went from four to two wheels to no wheels and a ride in the life-flight helicopter after his accident. Also on Saturday, OhioFlatTrackRacing.com's Bryan Molli rebroke his recently mended ankle. On Sunday, Paul Baiiey "bailed" off his vintage Honda in tum four. and Larry Bishop dumped his vintage Triumph in turn three. Former kickboxer Gary Lachance conjured up speculation that the number 666 might not be the most prudent one to hang on the front of a fire-breathing XR750. as the New Englander got bucked rather harshly off his "evil" twin in turn three. Despite the carnage, all will recover to race again. Rich Long proved he was fully recovered from the injuries that cut short his 2002 season. On his Yamaha, Long pulled the holeshot and held on to win the 1DOcc Vintage class on Sunday despite heavy, race-long pressure from former class champ Thomas Englehart. Long's son Bubba broke a couple of vertebrae and his tailbone and fractured his pelvis at the first round of the series and will be out of action for some time. Long wore Bubba's racing jacket in tribute to hjs injured son. It's been said that anybody can go fast on a smooth track, but it takes a special racer to be fast through the ruts. Ricky Marshall is a special racer. The 2003 AMA Horizon Award contender continues to be in a class by himself among his Ohio competition. The talented 15-year-old is in a holding pattern of race dominance, and he continued to pad his already-hefty Amateur resume with more wins. His next birthday will be his 16th, which will allow him to move up to the Pro ranks for a competition level better suited to his considerable talent. But for now, Marshall is keeping his eyes on the Horizon. When Marshall does fin.lly move on, youngster Ricky Boiey is the most likely heir apparent to Marshall's status .s top Ohio Amateur. Attacking the track with his Marshall-like, on-the-gas, wide-open style, Boley often runs and hides from his local competition. That was the case again this weekend, as the youthful speedster racked up four wins in four tries. For those counting wins, 20-year-old Ben Evans has a place in any argument about the "top Amateur in Ohio" - aithough, unlike his two younger counterparts, Evans generally doesn't run off and hide. Evans is a tough, "linebacker/fullback" type of racer. He's a throwback dirt-tracker from days gone by. and his races and riding style tend to mirror that. His races are generally knock-down, drag-out affairs that go right down to the wire. Such was the case on Sunday, as Evans hopped a ride on one of Don Grupp's superfast Can-Ams and ventured for the first time into Lightweight Vintage competition. Canadian Grupp, who is known for his potent CanAm two-strokes, lost his regular rider to injury at round one of the Ohio Series and bestowed "test pilot" honors on Evans. Evans didn't disappoint. In typical fashion, he engaged in an elbow-to-elbow. all-out war for the win in the Lightweight final on Sunday. Yamaha-mounted veteran Ray Rees provided the competition. Their duel lasted until the last lap, when Evans finally barreled past Rees for the win. In the Heavyweight Vintage class. Evans, now on his 500cc Honda, took on another Ohio veteran in a similar knock-down, dragout brawl. Ivan Carl, on a bike out of the Vanderkooi racing stable, went toe to toe with Evans. The fight lasted the distance. The two traded punches (figuratively speaking) and pushed each other to the brink. In the end, once again Evans prevailed after another close race. The Vanderkooi family honor would be upheld by Expert-ranked Jerry in the Pro class. For the last race of the day, Vanderkooi rolled to the line aboard a TLJ 000 Suzuki. The big twin took its position at the front of the field. Vanderkooi's lead grew with each lap .s he blasted through the ruts, throttle open, crossing the line first, keeping the Vanderkooi family win streak alive and closing out another full weekend of Ohio half mile r.cing.
