An open invitation is sent to women all over the globe to come attend this event and compete with the best riders in the world. This year's event had 28 women from seven countries lined up for battle on the starting gate. This year, Hangtown added Women's races to the program. The schedule was set as WML, I 25cc, then 250cc. Jessica Patterson took the first-moto holeshot, with Jessica Snyder, Steffi Laier, Stefy Bau and Sarah Whitmore close behind. Patterson gapped the field early as she made her way up the first hill. That stint in front was short-lived, liS Patterson went over the bars and banded the lead to Laier. Once out front, the fast German pulled a lead and continued to extend it with each lap. While the crowd was trying to see if Patterson was all right. no one noticed that Whitmore had made a move on Bau and was now in second. Whitmore cruised out to a huge lead over third place and actually seemed to gain ground on the leader as the moto neared its end. Whitmore put in a great effort but just could not catch the German. Bau cruised along to get points (due to a collarbone injury) and held on to third for four laps before Alex Haupt caught her. Haupt. another German. slowly caught Bau and made the pass late on lap four. Bau. now in fourth, picked it back up a little and kept Haupt within three seconds, waiting for the German to make a mistake but never challenging her. Fifth place went to Shelly Harens, but it wasn't easy. Harens made an incredible charge through the field, moving up from 14th place on lap one to battle for the spot with Marisa Hampshire and Tarah Geiger. Harens, Hampshire and Geiger battled for that spot for the last three laps of the moto. When they rounded the last corner and headed for the crest of the finish-line tabletop, less than one bikelength separated the three. Harens held the edge for fifth, with Hampshire sixth and Geiger seventh. Patterson and Tanya Satchwell both crashed in the first moto and left Hangtown with zero points. Patterson was shaken but okay; Satchwell broke her collarbone but should be healed by round three. In moto two, Sheena Patterson got out of the gates first, but as they neared the official holeshot marker, Whitmore sneaked under her and stole the holeshot by inches. Whitmore was on the gas, pulling away from Patterson and the rest of the fieLd. The early running order was Whitmore, Sheena, Snyder, Hempshire, Tamra Fern, Haupt, Harens, Laler and Bau. By the end of the first lap, Whitmore had a three-second lead; Sheena was second. with Hampshire, Snyder, Laier. Harens and Bau catching up fast. Whitmore continued to open up her lead while the rest of the field battled among themselves. By the end of lap two. Whitmore's lead was almost eight seconds on Hampshire. Laier was now third, and Sheena, now fourth, was being pressured' by Snyder, Harens and Bau, and Haupt was quickly catching up to that group. Laier moved into second on lap three. Laier then started to cut into Whitmore's 10second lead. By the end of lap three, Whitmore was nine seconds ahead of Laier. Hampshire was a solid third. Sheena was now under heavy pressure from Harens and Bau. Out front, Laier continued to chisel away at Whitmore's lead. When the two-lap card came out, Whitmore's lead had been narrowed to 3.5 seconds. Being out front with that depth of field behind her was new to Whitmore; she seemed to slowly change her riding style to extremely cautious as the moto wore on. Laier was narrowing the gap quickly. As they entered the final lap, Laier moved into position and seemed to know exactly where she was going to make the pass. Halfway through the last lap, Whitmore protected the inside line while Laier went outside and carried more momentum. Whitmore exited the comer with a 15-foot lead, but Laier had the drive, and within 100 yards she had made the pass and gained a 20-foot lead on Whitmore. Once out front, Laier never let Whitmore get close to her, and she took the win by less than a second. Hampshire and Harens battled for third for almost five laps; Hampshire held off Harens for the final podium position. Haupt was really on the gas in the second half of the moto and moved through riders to take fifth, which was good enough to secure third overall on the day and put two Germans on the podium. Snyder took sixth. Patterson held on for seventh, and Bau, who crashed on lap five while making a play for fourth, managed to salvage eighth. MOUNT MORRIS, PA, MAY 23 While round three of the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships, the Thor Pro National at High Point, offered great racing that kept the crowd cheering all Sunday long, only a few spectators there knew that the track had already been witness to some great racing a few days earlier. The annual Team Green Spring Classic, held the Friday before the National, put some of the region's finest Amateurs out on the same track as the Pros. And their racing was great, too. including two phenomenal battles between A-class favorites Sammy Holland, a Cernics Suzuki rider out of Pennsylvania. and Team Green's Shawn Clark, one of the nation's top Amateur prospects. Team Green also sent Kyle Chisholm, possibly the nation's fastest Intermediate pilot. to High Point, as well as recent Supermini graduate Mitchell Dougherty. Each of them came away with first-place trophies for their efforts. But perhaps the best battle of the day took place in the A divisions, between Clark and Holland. The duo split wins in the fastest classes of the day. the 125cc A and 250cc A divisions, and Holland completed a strong day of riding with a win in the Collegeboy class. The racing was even better considering the rugged conditions the pack had to endure early in the day. Heavy rain all week led to a muddy track on Friday morning, especially considering that Racer Productions, the event's organizers, had dumped truckloads of sawdust onto the course to make for softer terrain. That led to very soft conditions early on Friday, but Racer Productions extended practice to help the riders get acclimated to the soil. By the aftemoon, the sun had come out, and the track started developing lines and bumps that led to great racing. Only a shower late in the day prevented every moto from going off in superb conditions, although even then the track crew led by Tim Coombs kept things in good running order. All the classes ran one long moto in order to promote good racing, despite the mud and the busy Pro National weekend schedule. In the minicycle classes, young Daniel Lippman mastered the 65cc (7-9) class, while Shawn Rife took the 65cc (10-1 I ) win on his KTM. The 85cc classes were topped by Tyler Bowers, an Ohio native and Kawasaki jockey who won the 7-11 class and the Open Mini division, beating pilots up to four years his senior. Joey Keefe won the 85cc (12-13) class, and Chad Dunning won the 14-15 division. The B classes on the big bikes were topped by Dougherty and Chisholm, with Chisholm, yet another fast Floridian, winning the 250cc B class and Dougherty topping the 125s. Chisholm had a bad moto in the 125cc B contest, but he answered back to beat Dougherty in the Schoolboy (12-15) class. Holland survived the mud to win the 250cc A class over Clark. which set up a phenome· nal battle between the two in the 125cc A ranks. Clark dogged Holland the entire moto before finally battling past him with two laps left to win that one. Finally, two old names came to battle for the Vet A win, with CTi's former Pro rider Tom Carson getting the nod in that class, topping Florida's Earl May. Carson even won the Over 40 Senior class - and it's a rare occurrence when a forty-something pilot tops riders 10 years younger than himself. High Point Raceway Mount Morris.
