Ml, MAY 18 Jerry Lorenz Jr. laid down the law in the 125cc Junior class, taking the overall win in grand fashion on day two of Log Road Motocross' Loretta Lynn Qualifier weekend. Good weather, a great track, and the fact that this was the last area qualifier in the region brought in more than 650 participants from as far away as Colorado and Florida. In moto one, Eric Miller hit the jackpot and won the drag race to turn one, grabbing the holeshot. Nipping at his heels was a scary-fast bunch comprised of Grant Moreland, Cody Chmielewski, Lorenz, Steve Carnahan and Greg Durlvage. Moreland had chipped away at Miller's lead by the end of the world's longest tabletop, and he outbraked him at the end to grab the lead. Chmielewski and Lorenz both thundered around on YZ250Fs in third and fourth, respectively, until Lorenz dived to the inside entering the new switchback section to overta~e Chmielewski. Out front, Moreland was charging hard - as was Miller, who was hoping to stay in the leader's draft. Aboard his Lowe Racing/Tom Cycle· backed machine, Lorenz overtook Miller in the fast sweeper section after the Winners' Circle triple by keeping the throttle pinned and the tires on the ground, Moreland looked strong out front, despite having returned a week early from a hiatus due to a broken collarbone just so he could qualify for the regional at Dutch. Lorenz was now in complete control of second and focused on running down Moreland. Miller had third, but Chmielewski was right at his rear fender, and he made a pass down the long center straightaway. The checkered flag fell first for the ProSource Motorsports/Cernics Suzuki/Fly Racing/Pro Action Suspension/EBC Brakes-supported Moreland. Lorenz took the runner-up position, finishing a close second. Third-place finisher Chmielewski was going good all day. Miller heid off Carnahan to claim fourth, though not without a fight, as Carnahan was showing him a wheel in nearly every comer throughout the last lap. When the Junior boys thundered through tum one in molo two, the booming four-stroke of Lorenz was out front, while Chmielewski, Moreland, Kevin Bryant and Miller all tried to keep him in sight. It looked as though Lorenz had a 450cc motor in his bike, as his lead grew until only a red flag could keep him from winning. Moreland overtook Chmielewski before lap two was in the books, but by that time Lorenz was long gone. Chmielewski stalled his scooter and watched Carnahan, Bryant and Josh Radi ride by before he could get it relit. The checkered flag greeted Lorenz first. A blistering second moto rewarded the speedy youngster with the day's overall victory. Moreland finished second, which matched his overall finish. Chmielewski was third again after bulldogging his Yamaha past Bryant on the last lap to secure the final podium position. Radi held down a hard-fought fifth. In 125cc A action, Dustin Pulley (1·2) claimed the overall aboard his R&D Motorsports YZ250F, clicking off a couple of great starts that turned into quick motos and the overall victory. Brad Ripple (3-1) took second overall. Finding the last spot on the box was Championship Powersports{Tech-Care Sus· pension rider Jason McDonald (3-4), aboard his KTM 125 SX. "The KTM is working really well," McDonald said of his new ride. "Dave and the guys at Tech-Care do a great job, and with two grand a day up for grabs at Log Road's Great Lakes Championships coming up on June 20 through 23, it was a good time to put in some laps: Log Road Motocross Bronson 9 Michigan May 18. 2003 50 (4-6) SHAfT: 1. Kelsey Nan· AUBURN,NY,MAY 18 Round six of WNYMA racing at "The Place to Race," Frozen Ocean Moto·X Park, drew more than 425 riders for an awesome day of fun under the sun. The WNYMA Series continues to dominate the western New York State motocross scene, attracting some of the nation's top Pro riders, such as 2003 National Four-Stroke Champion Paul Carpenter, as well as other nationally ranked riders, such as Bruce Stratton. It's no wonder No Fear just signed a huge sponsorship agreement with the WNYMA, joining Moose Racing Products, Thor. and Flesh Gear as series supporters (to name just a few). The burning question still smoldering from the Frozen Ocean Nightcross shootout the night before was, Would the Iightning~fast Carpenter strike twice in one weekend? More than 20 250cc Expert riders from New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Canada were primed and ready to pin the throttle on the wide, uphill left-hander. At the drop of the gate, Sam Holland rocketed out front, but in his haste he quickly washed out wide, allOWing Travis Hesheth, Don Schmidt, Stratton and Carpenter by on the inside. Car- penter made some journeyman moves. buzzsawing his way through traffic to take the lead with a leap of faith over the big tabletop jump, thrilling the huge crowd. Schmidt was now in command of second place. with a hard-charg~ ing Brandon Kuhn bringing the WNYMA num~ ber-one plate into the mix, while Holland was rebounding nicely in fourth place. Then Mike Leavitt powered his way around Holland and began a long, bar-to-bar battle royal with Kuhn for third. These two swapped spots, looks, decals and recipes, with some "rubbin' is racin' ," side~by-side action. The big. old, loamy track was working in awesomely, with a few jelly-loose spots mixed in with those famous jam-tight comers. Multiple Jines and grooves make for great racing, and these guys used every line and groove to dig their way around the track. Northeast Regional arenacross star Aaron Dieter recovered from a midpack start and stayed on the gas and in control to work his way past rider after rider until he eventually got past Kuhn for third. Meanwhile, Carpenter laid down twominute~and~four~secondlap times to take the checkered flag first. Leavitt, Dieter, Stratton and Schmidt rounded out the top five. It was clear there were no pretenders in this class when the gate dropped for moto
