Broome-Tioga Sports Center When Antalek Attacks! By JIM P. SANDERSON BINGHAMTON. NY. MAY 10 Jason Antalek attacked the competition in the Collegeboy and 250cc Open Amateur classes. riding to a perfect 1-1 score in each. In the first Collegeboy moto. Antalek got his Honda into the lead right off the start, ahead of Ryan O'Malley and Rob Novak. When the leaders reappeared at the top of the Broome-Tioga National hill, the top-five funning order was Antalek, O'Malley, Novak, Bill Hopkins and Daniel Deemie. The top five spread out extremely quickly and remained exactly the same all the way to the checkered flag. Antalek rode unchallenged to the moto win, finishing with a 1O-second cushion. O'Malley led the start of the second moto, with Novak, Antalek and Richard D'Amico trailing. Antalek moved ahead quickly and took the point after only half a lap, relegating O'Malley to second and Novak to third. Deemie moved up to claim fourth, and D'Amico dropped to fifth. The top four were unchanged on the following lap, but Nicholas Apgar passed D'Amlco to take fifth. Once again, the top five spread out, and by lap three it was fairly certain that the only thing that would change was Antalek's margin of Victory. Antalek continued to pull away each lap and finished the moto with a nine-second lead. Rounding out the top five were O'Malley, Novak, Deemie and Apgar. Antalek took the overall. O'Malley's consistent 2-2 rides earned him the runner-up spot on the Collegeboy podium, while Novak's 3-3 finishes earned him third overall. In the first Over 25 Expert moto, Scott Rockwell set out after Darryl Smith and caught him with half a lap to go, but he couldn't seem to get by; then Rockwell went for the inside line in the final turn before the finish line and executed a textbook block· pass on Smith to take the lead. The two drag-raced to the finish, with Rockwell crossing first by only half a bikelength for the win. Smith had to settle for second, followed by Gene Nighman, Jason Orr and Kevin Krueger. Rockwell got his Honda out front first in the final Over 25 Expert moto, with Nighman. Smith, Orr and Krueger trailing. Rockwell was cruising and had a five-second advantage by the start of lap two. A lap later, Rockwell had increased his lead to 10 seconds. The rest of the top five were very spread out, and the rest of the moto was a classic snoozer. Weatherford MX Park Arnold All the Way By SHELLY WATSON WEATHERFORD,TX, MAY 10 Round four of the fourth annual North Texas Night Series made a stop at Weatherford MX Park, marking the halfway point of the series. Among the 186 entered riders vyIng for top points in the overall standings, many had competed earlier in the day at Oak Hill MX Park at the regional Ponca City Qualifier, making for a very long day. The nine 250cc Novice riders came ready to race. That was evident when KTM-mounted Benton Arnold pulled the holes hot, with Thomas Sharp, Kody Franks and Randy Oliver all racing for position around the first cor· nero Amold and Franks finished the first mota in first and second, respectively. Oliver and Sharp battled throughout the first moto, but it was Sharp who took third, followed by Oliver. The second moto again saw Arnold out front, but this time Sharp was the rider on Arnold's back fender; however, he was unable to get around the leader. Arnold's perfect score let him take home the first-place trophy and established him as the overall points leader in the 250cc Novice class heading into the next round. Sharp and Franks switched places in the second moto; Sharp's 3-2 tally was good enough for second, and Frank's 2-3 finishes awarded him third overall. Oliver (4-5) was fourth overall, while Trayl Hopkins was fifth. Jesse Martin made his presence known in the 125cc Beginner class. Although Martin finished fifth in the first moto, his second·moto luck and his riding skills were all he needed to take home first overall. Trey Randle's 4-2 score was good enough for second, while a solid 3-3 finish was just what Ryan Nichols needed to take third overall. Eric Stapleton was on the gas in the first mota, but a slip in the second moto gave him a fourth-place finish, Brian Booth was on the gas to take the first-moto win, but his seventh·place finish in mota two gave him fifth for the evening. The 125cc Beginners proVided some great enter· tainment for the large crowd. Local Weatherford boy Cody Dickey was the only rider who showed up for the 125cc Intermediate class. Unfortunately, he didn't show up to race; he just wanted to show off his tuxedo and the white 2003 Ford Mustang he was driving. Luck was with Cody at round four: Since there were no riders entered in the 125cc Intermediate class, everyone's points remained the same. Drama was Rowing through the pits and on the track. Racing legend Doug Chandler made his first appearance at Mesa. The Sportsman heat race started off the motorcycle racing at the NASCAR track. E.\~ 1':~ ., : 'r,t ." ··. • • I Mesa Marin Raceway: "Dirty Ernie" lyles slides his CR500 in for the win in the Sportsman main event at the second round of the Mesa Marin Supermoto USA series in Bakersfield, California. Motorsports KTM 380, battled with "Dirty Ernie" Lyles for the lead. Scott Nakamura and Cliff Sullivan battled for third. Josh "UI'" Pearce was running fifth until Tyler Snow got under before the checkered flag for fifth. Cates won it, over Lyles. In the Open heat race, defending champion Leonardo "Pucho" Bagnis took a fairly easy win. Chandler and Fred Cummings/Honda's Rick Pearce started on the back row, due to Rick's DNF at the race before and Chandler's not showing up for the first race. They were making their way forward until a rider missed a shift, causing Chandler to rear-end him and fall, and also knocking over Rick. Chandler and Rick got up; it took Rick a bit longer to start his bike. Speedster Casey Yarrow and Don Hart were looking at second; Hart took it, and Yarrow settled for third. "Red Ed" Coffey and Jeff Harrington rounded out the top five. The Dash For Cash is a six·man qualification run; after each lap, the rider in last place is eliminated, until only fOUf are left for a twolap dash. Rick and Chandler didn't qualify because of the incident in the heat race. Lyles was out first, and then Cates was gone. Yarrow didn't finish the two-lap dash due to bike problems. Pucho experienced fuel problems, which allowed Hart to take home the cash. In the Sportsman main, Sullivan shot his Honda CR500 into the lead, with Lyles, also on a CR500, following, as was Cates. Nakamura, Snow and second-row starter Lil' Pearce were all trailing closely. Sullivan led for a good six laps and was looking to win his first Sportsman race. Cates got under Lyles and tried to pass Sullivan but nudged Sullivan's rear tire; Cates went down on his Lyles Fiber· glass CR500. Lyles had settled for seconds and thirds in the past races, so he, too, was looking for his first win. Nakamura got by Sullivan and tried to pass Lyles, but Lyles stepped it up for the win. Sullivan finished third. Snow and Lil' Pearce rounded out the top five, In the Open main, Pucho stormed off from the pole. Chandler shot from the second row to second place in a flash. Yarrow rode his dad's Yamaha 450 in third. Then came Hart and Rick Pearce. Chandler was hanging back, letting Pucho control the race; then Chandler caught Pucho with no sweat. Yarrow held third. Rick couldn't find a way around Hart had to settle for fifth. On the white-Rag lap, Chandler had one last chance to pass Pucho, but a lapper banged bars with Chandler; it's a miracle Chandler stayed up for second. Pucho got the win. eN Results SPT8MN: I.
