Village Creek MX Park The Sugarland Express is Back in the Saddle Again By GARY T. OBER FORT WORTH. TX, MAY 4 The Village Creek staff and organizer Suzi Beabout hosted a fantastic race on a beautifully prepped racetrack, and Throttle Jockey/EBRfTwin Air-backed Blake Cochran did it again, winning two classes after fantastic races in both the 125cc Novice and 125cc Open divisions. After round three, Cochran now has two Texas Championship SeSe Summer Series wins under his belt and appears to be a championship favorite. Cochran, from Sugarland, Texas, controlled every lap of all four motos aboard his Yamaha, posting twin 1-1 scores. Suzuki-mounted H. McMillan was not quite keeping pace with Cochran, but he finished a close second in the 125cc Novice and Open classes with 2-2 tallies. McMillan also deserves kudos for his 1-1 sweep in the always-aggressive Schoolboy class. Kawasaki jockey Shea Fouchek was also in the 125cc Novice mix, finishing out with a 3·3 score for third on the day. Fouchek won the last 125cc Novice race in Floresville, and. like McMillan, he could also be a top contender for the championship number-one plate. Yamaha pilot Blake Revels had a great day of motocross action, finishing third in the 125cc Open class and first in the 125cc Intermediate class. Weston McCulloch (5-5) and Jonathan Arnell (4-6) rounded out the top five in the 125cc Novice contest, while Jansin McCoy (5-4) and Michael Haby (4-5) made the top five in the 125cc Open class. Haby had better luck on his YZ250, winning both motos of the 250cc Intermediate clash, over James Willingham, Matt Thweatt, Greg Huron and Luther Easley. Richard White enjoyed two class wins, in the 80cc Open and Four~Stroke Mini divisions, while Brady Pierce checked out in the 50cc (7-8) and 60cc (7-9) classes. Other standout rides were turned in by Dale Parrott, Jay Dearing, Dawson Draycott, Kyle Swanson and Aaron Reynolds. All of these young chargers put on quite a show for the Village Creek faithful, each hoping to win his overall division at the end of the series. Results 50 (4-6): \. SOBER AUBURN, CA, MAY 9 Reigning Northern California Speedway points Champion Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden opened up the 2003 Northern California Fast Fridays Speedway Season in much the same fashion as he completed the previous season: running out in front of the pack. "Man, I thought the track was a little slick tonight." said the multitime track champion. "But considering all the rain that fell this week. I think it was in great shape overall." Hedden drew lane two for the Scratch main, outside of three-time National Speedway Champion "Flyin' Mike" Faria. Visiting So-Cal rider and former Nor-Cal Junior rider Scott Brant lined up in lane three, with Bart "Simpson" Bast just to his right in the outside lane four. Hedden got the best start, with Brant on a short leash. Faria, who said in the pits after the event that he would rather have drawn lane two. or even three, for the night's last race, struggled with poor traction on the inside and came out of the first turns battling Bast, whose gate-four attempt was no doubt less than he'd visualized. Once Hedden established himself in front, there was little Brant could do but stay close and hope for a mistake on Hedden's part. That's what he did, but Hedden didn't, and the former Auburn track champion had the first Scratch main-event victory of the season aboard his Peterich Cycle/Arai/Apex/Troy Lee/HEHAW Racing GM. Brant finished a close second, and Faria stayed just ahead of Bast for third. Former Division Two rider Billy Hiles took control of the Handicap main from the begin~ ning. outstarting fellow zero-yard-liner Ivan Sevart. Fortunately for Hiles, 40-yard handicappers Bryan Yarrow, Tommy Hedden and Eric Carrillo mixed it up behind him throughout the event. frustrating Bobby Hedden's forward advances until late in the race. Yarrow managed to clear Tommy and Carrillo to capture a close second~place finish, behind the fading Hiles, while third went to Bobby, whose attempt at capturing double wins came up a lap short. A Carrillo fared much better in the Division Two main - Mark Carrillo, that is. The former Junior rider was competing in his first-ever 500cc competitive race, and he took over the lead on the second lap and breezed to the win ahead of Randy Martin. In the Youth Speedway program, Auburn resident Paul Johnson took over early in the restarted Division One finale and sailed to victory, ahead of J.T. Mabry and Rickey Weils. Former Pee Wee rider Rick Felicio claimed the Division Two top spot when he outdistanced Mitchell Johnson and Jay Douglas Rickets. Ronnie Woodsford came from the 50-yard line to beat newcomer Cody Ciciarelli and Tori Hubbert in the Youth Division Three trophy pursuit. ROCK GLEN, NY, MAY 10 Silver Springs Racing Inc. kicked off its 2003 Nite-Cross Series, and more than 120 riders came out for some evening action. The track staff and Mother Nature collaborated to pro· duce an ultrafast yet technically challenging surface on which to compete under the lights. Jesse Milley designed this stadiumcross track, and the large number of returning riders is a testament to this Wyoming County motorcycle-racing facility's commitment to professional motocross and supercross promotion. Moto one was valid only for gate choice, an hour's worth of bragging rights in the pits, and one last chance at learning the faster lines before the feature moto would start, but apparently nobody told the 125cc Expert class. Veteran Brian Austin made his presence felt, holding WNYMA's number-one 2002 rider Brandon Kuhn and Jamie Robinson at bay to claim moto-one honors. Moto two showcased several mxride.comsponsored riders, such as Joe Ellington, who claimed the inside gate. "Air~On" Aaron Dieter and Brandon Kuhn also joined the mxride.com "Legion of Zoom" lineup. When the gate dropped, Ellington used the inside line to grab the holeshot and pocket the $50 reward. Jamie Robinson. Corey Kandefer and Northeast Regional Arenacross star Dieter went bar to bar to bar in an all-out stampede for second place. Then. one by one, Robinson, Kandefer and Dieter worked their way past Ellington. Austin was next in line to challenge Ellington, while Robinson, Kandefer and Dieter resumed their battle, this time for the lead. Robinson and Kandefer made some contact after both riders went flat out flying through a tight righthand corner, and Robinson went off the track in front of the huge crowd of race fans at the finish line. Dieter was the next rider to lose his grip, slipping all the way back to ninth place. Kandefer now had a commanding lead over Ellington, Nigel Martin and Jeff Whaley. Strangely, as if on cue, it was now Ellington's turn to lay down his Yamaha while cornering solo, and he, too, lost a ton of positions. Kan· defer enjoyed an entire whoops section of a lead over Austin and Martin, and Dieter resurfaced in fourth place and was on the pipe, looking to pick off a few more positions. Kan· defer took the win, with Austin claiming second and Dieter railying for a third-place finish. Martin heid on to fourth. and Robinson rebounded up to fifth. Kuhn recovered for sixth. The second Silver Springs Racing NiteCross Series race will be held June 14, and race three on July 19. These are companion Saturday night events, with WNYMA points races on the next day. What better way is there to spend a weekend than among friends competing on two completely different types of tracks at the same address? Costa Mesa Speedway A Flying Greyson, Robbin' 'em of the Junior Win By ELAINE JONES COSTA MESA, CA, MAY 10 Don "Too Tall" Odom has come full circle. The wel1~known Speedway racer is now the number-one pit-crew member for his young son Tyler. Odom has imported a little 85cc two-stroke Speedway bike, and it made its debut Saturday night at Costa Mesa. Whether or not it will be able to hang with the 200cc four·stroke Hondas that most of the kids are running remains to be seen. An alternative would be to give the little bikes their own class and hopefully lure some younger riders to the sport. Dario Galvin gave one of the bikes a try but had problems getting used to it and ended the evening on his old bike. Ail they need is a chance, and they will get that at Costa Mesa. The first race of the night for the youngsters had Galvin out on top, but his lead was short-lived, as Skyler Greyson took over on the second lap and went on to take the checkers. Dylan Stark and Tamara Krips were second and third. The second heat was all Jason Ramirez's, as he went out on top and never looked back. Greyson was there for second, with Krips again third. The main would decide the night's winner. Off the line, it was 14-year-old Greyson out front, with Krips hot on his heels.
