Checkered Flag Productions and the Waco
Eagles Motorcycle Club hosted the South
Central AMA/VDTRA National Championship
Short Track races in Waco, Texas. Jake Lewis
came all the way from Princeton, Kentucky,
but went home with multiple trophies. He
placed first in the 50cc Senior (7 ·8) Stock and
65cc Modified/DTX (7 - 1 I) Combined classes.
Jamie Wood placed second in the 50cc Senior
class, and Travis Sands placed third. Kevin
Walter placed second in the 65cc Modified
class, and Dakota Jones placed third.
Nick Page had the lead on the first lap of
the 85cc Modified (7-11) contest, but he
quickly iet it slip through his grasp. Daniel
Larocca from Lake Charles, Louisiana, passed
Page on the second lap and went on to finish
first. Page slipped to third, while Andy Wood
hjt the gas and soared across the finish line in
second. Page finished third.
Page fared a bit better in the 85cc DTX
(9-13) class, placing second, behind Larocca.
Tye Kyles finished third.
Chase Sconyers took the holeshot in the
450cc Modified contest and held the lead to
take first. Kent Briggs finished in a close second, and Christopher Hamsmith placed third.
Russell Martin came off the starting line
first in the 505cc Pro Sport class. Scott Beckley from Bridgeport, Texas, rode his Vor hard
and took the lead on the fourth lap. On lap six,
Martin regained the lead for the win, with
Beckley a very close second. Jim Wood Jr.
came in third.
Bryan Smith won the first-place money on
his new factory Honda CRF450R in the Pro
Expert 505cc contest. Jason Tyer from Irving,
Texas, took second, and third went to Brett
Sowders.
In the VDTRA Over 30 Amateur 250450cc Pro-Am Trophy class, William Snyder
came in first. Richard Merlo was second, with
David Thompson a close third.
Daniel Rowland placed first in the 600cc
Amateur event. Dick Ford stayed hard on the
gas but was unable to overtake Rowland and
placed second. John Gregory finished third.
Chuck Ruiz left the starting line ahead of
the rest of the Over 50 Amateur class, but he
was overtaken on the fourth lap by Gregory,
who went on to finish first. David Barkley
opened up the gas and came away with the
second-place trophy. Gary Pettis placed third.
The Over 60 Pro-Am Super Senior contest
was an exciting race. BSA rider William Burr
from Fort Collins, Colorado, took the holeshot
but lost the lead on the second lap to Richard
Woods. Burr fought his way back into first
place on the seventh lap and held the lead
across the finish line. Wood placed second.
Dan Maioney placed third after starting fourth.
Kenny Biggs took first place in the 600cc
Pro class. Russell Briggs moved up from a
third-place start to cross the finish in second.
Erik Bland finished third.
Briggs also took first in the Open Pro Twin
class. Paul Covert placed second, and Frank
Hardman placed third.
