Beher took the second-moto win ~nd the overall. Willoughby finished second and second

The 20th anniversary of the 24-Hour Off-Road
Endurance World Championships, also known
as the 24 Hours of Le Fud, will be remembered for two things: horrible winds and the
smallest field of bikes in its history - one. But
at least the team comprised of multitime Baja
winner Greg Bringle, Jim Greene, Mark
Kariya, Vic Klotz, Phil Oveland and David
Slade beat the rest of the field, which was
comprised of lOATVs, and set a world record
of 1020.00 miles in their class, 125cc
Senior/Over 40.
Held at the Plaster City West OHV Area,
FRT MotorSports Promotions again utilized the
FIM-certified 10-mile course for its biennial
event (trucks and buggies compete in evennumbered years; bikes and A TVs take the
challenge in odd-numbered years), which saw
a sextet captained by Johnny Campbell set an
overall world record of 1418.39 miles in 200 I.
Nearly half the course runs eastward down
Coyote Wash before turning south for a short
blast and then westward across mostly hard·
packed terrain littered with rocks back to the
pits.
When Bringle elected to sleep in after
working the night before, starting duties fell to
Kariya for the 7 a.m. green flag, and he put
the RTT MotorsportsfPrecision Concepts/
Moose/Dunlop-supported WR250F into what
was, of course, an uncontested lead· at least
by any other motorcycles. The Kawasaki
700cc V-twin A TV that would ~ventually take
the overall ATV victory passed Kariya on the
second lap, but the bike's next rider, Slade,
quickly dispatched it during his stint.
From there, the little blue machine simply
clicked off lap after lap with only rider
changes and the occasional bit of maintenance slowing it. That's if you don't count the
winds, which at times produced white-out
conditions with estimated 50-mph gusts that
made it nearly impossible to use top ge~r
for the last few miles heading back toward
the pits.
"This isn't right; it's just not right'" Greene
lamented while huddled on the leeward side of
a trailer.
The only drama came as the race drew to
a close, when Bringle noticed that the Vamaha
didn't want to pull top gear anymore. When he
stopped to notify his teammates about the
problem, they noticed it was overheating.
Closer inspection revealed a huge hole in the
left. radiator, so he shut off the bike and waited
until Fud unfurled the checkered flag rather
than risk going out for a final I~p, not knowing
if it would make it, which would result in
a DNF.
But the lone motorcycle team ended up
credited with 102 laps or 1020 miles, besting
the closest of the seven ATV finishers (five of
which set world records in their respective
classes) by 80 miles. That worked out to a
44.96-mph average speed and left the team
looking forward to three things: getting out of
the wind, getting some sleep, and getting a
chance to go for another record in 2005.

"Rockin' Robin' McClain and Darin "Z-Man'
Zaremba battled in three classes at the Sandusky Valley Riders MC's season-opening
event, which also served as the first round of
the AMA District 12 Ohio MX Championship
Series.
McClain and Zaremba ballied back and
forth all day, with McClain winning the 250cc
B and Over 30 A/B events and Zaremba
claiming the Over 25A/B victory. The duo was
never more than a bikelength apart during all
six motos in which they competed. McClain,
the former National champ, seemed to be
schooling the hard-charging Zaremba. On a
few occasions, Zaremba seemed to have a win
in the bag, only to have McClelin zap him on
the last lap or so. The friendly rivals were
pushing each other hard .11 day.
A beautiful track was waiting for the eager
pack of some of Ohio's best racers. More than
260 riders took on the mostly natural-terrain
course, whkh features a multitude of jumps,
making it a challenging experience for all.
Honda East and First Or Dirt Shirts provided a
bunch of door prizes. which added to the
excitement.
Nathan Edwards scored double wins in the
Mini classes, taking the 85cc (12-15) and
Superminj·c1ass victories. Edwards had the
track dialed in for both of his second motos,
taking the wins to secure the overall victories.
Edwards had some heavy competition from
Michael Blauman, Cory Nething, George
Baker and Kyle Ditcher.
Some of the other riders who had outstanding days included Josh Kompa, who
took the 125cc Band 16-24-c1ass wins, and
Vince Karnow, who took the 125cc A and
250cc A-class victories in convincing fashion.
