Hom Rapids ORV Park: Andrew Denham contested the Over 30 Beginners class in Richland, Washington, site of the final round of the Pacific Racing Organization Northwest National Motocross series. Denham and Tim Winter behind. Benzel set a fast pace, but Denham used the straker to reel him in on the straights. Ivey was back after a first~corner traffic jam. Benzel pressured Denham by doubling into the tough rhythm section. Denham finished first, followed by Benzel, Winter, Greg Ogan and ivey. Benzel repeated the holeshot in moto two, with Denham and Ivey in tow. Denham passed Benzel, but Benzel caught him again in the rhythm section and finished first. Benzel ended on the top podium step, with Denham second, Winter third, Ivey fourth and Josh Jungers fifth. The over-the-hill gang chose motocross over golf again. Mel Vernoy led the Over 40 Beginners through the deep sand in both motos. Alan Day, Lyndell Raphael and Brian Ivey banged it out, finishing two-three-four in moto one. Raphael and Ivey had a great duel in moto two: Ivey would catch Raphael in the comers, and Raphael would get him back on the jumps. The two were side by side through the difficult rhythm section. Raphael edged out Ivey for second overall, behind winner Vernoy. The first 60cc Open moto looked like "Family Feud." "Crocodile" Hunter Evanson and his cousin Cody Evanson were running neck and neck in moto one. Cody edged ahead by railing the outside, only to have Hunter block-pass him in the next corner. Cody had nowhere to go but over the high side. Cole "Hot To Trot" Scott took advantage of the fall to get around. Hunter finished first, and Scott was second. Cody remounted for third. Cody took the holeshot in moto two, with Hunter on his fender. Cody wanted no part of his cousin's plastic and pulled ahead. Scott stepped it way up in moto two, blowing by on the back stretch. Scott continued to gain on Cody, finally getting in front with a lap-two double into the rhythm section. Scott puiled away on lap four for a huge win. Hunter's second-moto third nabbed second overall, with Cody third overall. Series sponsor Scott Goggles brought its race-support rig and riders all the way from Ketchum, Idaho. Scott had tons of giveaways for PRO riders. Honda had factory support money for quick red riders. Hansen's Energy Drinks kept riders pumped and refreshed. Andrew and Karen Denham had the Skagit Powers ports rig trackside again, changing tires. How reassuring is it for those who can't change a tire without pinching a tube to have them there? MX of Marion County Reddick, Florida Results: May 11, 2003 (Round 5 of 14) Florida Motocross Series Round 5: MX of Marion County Abell to PullOut the Victories By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON REDDICK, FL, MAY 11 One rider who was able to pull out some victo· ries at round five of the fifth annual Florida Motocross Series was Brandon Abell. This Suzuki jockey had the speed and know-how to keep riders at bay or pull out to a win. Abell won the overalls in the 125cc B and Youth/Big Wheel (12-15) classes. After the first round of motos, it seemed like it might be an uphill battle for Abell, facing off against his nearest competitor, Jonathan Camp. The Kawasaki rider won both of the first motos in close battles over Abell. In the second set of matos, Abell was able to tum the tables and take both mota wins. Camp led the first Youth moto, followed by Abell, Jake Donley, Camden Cruz and Troy Snyder. Camp and Abell started to pull away after one lap, and they continued to widen the gap for the rest of the race. Abell kept Camp honest the entire moto but was never able to mount a challenge or pass for the lead. Donley, on the other hand. had his hands full with three other riders for most of the race. Ricky Renner moved up from a seventh-place start and into fourth by the end of lap two. Renner then moved on by Donley with two laps to go for third. After Renner had gotten by Cruz and Simon Usuga, those two riders had a battle of their own. Usuga finally got by Cruz before the white flag flew to round out the top five. In moto two, Cruz absconded with the lead. Abell was on his rear fender and passed him on the inside before the anthill. Camp was third and didn't want to let Abell get away, so he passed Cruz coming out of the off-camber turn. This time, it was Abell's turn to lead, while Camp stayed ciose. On the last lap, Camp made a mistake, and Abell was able to pull out the win with ease. Cruz pulled out a slight lead on the three behind him - Donley, Usuga and Renner. Then Cruz lost that lead. Donley was pressuring Cruz but made a slight miscalculation. Usuga and Renner went on by, neVlls redeemed himself in the second moto with a third for fifth overall. Another rider who won two classes but did even better in his finishes was Renner. This fast Yamaha rider came back from a short layoff after bruising his lungs a couple of weeks ago. In the 85cc (12-13) class, Renner swept the day; the other riders had a hard time even keeping him in sight. There ended up being a three-way tie for second overall. Bradley Bollmann followed Renner home in second the first mota but had difficulties in the second moto; all Bollmann needed was a fourth to get second overall, but it didn't happen - Bollmann came in fifth, which dropped him to fourth overall. Claiming second overall was Jimmy Page. This Suzuki rider placed fifth in the first mota but rode to an impressive second place the next time out. Splitting the two in third overall was Dalton Yingling, with a 3-4 tally. In the Supermini class, Renner rode against some of the 14- to 15~year~olds and didn't have any problems. In the first moto, Troy Davis rode to second, followed by Matthew Theus and T.J. Tiffany. Renner took the holeshot in mota two, with Dustin Jensen right behind him. The two pulled away, and Renner ended up pulling out a couple of seconds at the checkered flag. Jensen's overall standing was hurt by a DNF the first moto. Theus held off Tiffany until after the white flag. Theus slid off, allowing Tiffany by, as well as Bollmann and Joe Lafalce. The only other rider to win two on the day was J.B. Ballard. The Four-Stroke victory came with ease, as the Honda pilot took both mota wins. Claiming the runner-up spot was Shawn Pettit in both motos, ahead of Aaron Cone (4-3). The Open Money class was a bit more challenging for Ballard. The overall win did come with two moto victories, but not without a little fight from Vet rider Timothy Eggers. and Renner quickJy passed Usuga before the finish-line jump for fourth. The three pulled up on Cruz, but the only one to get by was Renner, and Usuga and Donley held their positions. The J25cc B class went the same way. Camp won moto one, but Abell pulled out the victory in mota two. In this class, Usuga got the last podium position with a 3-5 score, besting Casey Gulick's 5-4 tally. Cruz had a disappointing first moto, finishing eighth, but 51 OIL-INJ: 1. Tyler Oliver (Cob); 2. Christopher Salter (KTM); 3. Tanner Kelchum (Yam); 4. Erick Knowles (Yam); 5.
