The grounds at Virginia International Raceway were saturated, and the mud was slick and sticky. When practice started, everyone was on rain tires, but as the start of the fourth round of the WERA National Challenge Series was scheduled to begin, the rain abated, and the track began to dry. After another scramble for tires, the first race of the day took to the grid. At the flip of the green flag, firstyear Expert Greg Moore, on his Buzz's Psycle/Michelin Suzuki 1000, charged through the first corner, leading Mark Junge, on the Vesrah/Marshall Distributing Suzuki. Tim Bemisderfer, David Duprey and Scott Carpenter contested third as the lead duo led them out of turn eight and charged up the hill. At the halfway point, Moore poured on the coals and stretched out his lead over Junge. Bemisderfer took his Shenandoah Honda 954 to third, with Duprey in fourth. Moore continued to lead and took his first win of the year in the Open Superstock class. Matt Lynn shadowed him for the first two laps and struck to gain the lead on his EBC/Silkolene Suzuki. At the end of this Novice race, Lynn continued to lead, Rojas had second, Chad Larsen took third, Eddie Robinson was fourth, and Adam Durham placed fifth. Junge and Moore went at it again in the 600cc Superstock Expert final. Moore led the first lap, and then Junge moved ahead. At the halfway point, Moore made his move but slipped off into the hog pen, and Junge had the victory. Junge's teammate John Jacobi, on the Vesrah/ Arai/Vanson Suzuki, took second, • n e vv s leaving Bemisderfer in third on the Honda 600. Michael Garofalo came home fourth on the D&D/lmport Cycles Suzuki, and Mark Crozier rounded out the top five on the GMD/No Limits Cycle Honda 600. Michigan rider Larry Cohee took the holeshot in the 125cc GP race. C. Brian Kcraget wasted no time getting around Cohee and began to put some distance between himself and the battle for second, as John Klaras moved up. Kcraget took the win on his NESBA.com/Speed Werks Honda, and Klaras finally got by the TCR Honda of Cohee to gain the second-place trophy. As Bradley Champion and Martin Musil left the field in the Expert potion of the Lightweight Twins race, Bo Morgan was charging after quick starter Brent Hackney in the Novice portion of this race. Musil put pressure on Champion on his BBC Racing SV, as Novice racer Joel Laroche moved into second in his race. Expert Chris Norsand maintained third in the Expert race, while Phillip Chapin moved to fourth, over Calvin Brown. Champion held off Musil's charge and took the win on the Motul/Metzeler SV, while Morgan took the Novice win on his RGM Racing SV. Lynn and Rojas led the charge in the 750cc Superstock Novice race.
