Arkansas Hare SCrambles Championship series
Round 4: Sturkie Road
Carr Runs Over
Sturkie
By PAM CARR
SALEM, AR, MAY 4
Round four of the Arkansas Hare Scrambles
Championship Series had the potential to be a
sloppy one, as there had been abundant rain
the previous week. Evidently the track had
needed some moisture, and it was almost
perfect - except for the 10 creek crossings
that were filled with water. After the first lap,
water from the creeks had splashed over the
banks and muddied many parts of the track.
On the morning of the race, the sky was
very overcast, and there was the threat of a
downpour most of the day.
This event was co-sanctioned by the Memphis Motorcycle Club, and thus there were
more riders than normal. When the riders were
lined up at the start, all the classes were filled
across the line. The starting line seemed a
little slick, and some of the riders were having
trouble practicing their starts.
As there was some very good talent in the
AA class, it promised to be an exciting race.
The flag dropped, and Josh Poteete got the
best kick off the line, but Brian Sanders had a
better drive going and took the holeshot heading into the woods. Sanders didn't hesitate
and took off, creating a gap between himself
and the rest of the field almost immediately.
Josh Poteete was in second but soon fell,
allowing Carrol Dickerson and Clint Carr to
charge by. Yamaha of Russellville rider Carr
didn't get such a great start, but he made a
quick recovery and took third.
Sanders had pulled a 10-second lead over
the rest of the field halfway through the first
lap.
"I put my head down and just tried to place
some distance between me and the next
rider," said Sanders.
Carr had gotten around Dickerson for second place, and he was headed for first. At the
end of the first lap, Sanders, on his Kawasaki
Sports Center/Jerry Kocinski Racing-backed
KX250, had built a 26-second lead.
Carr was still in second and riding hard to
catch Sanders. Pote"ete recovered from his
unfortunate fall and was in third, only five
seconds ahead of fourth-placed rider Dale
Duke from Tennessee.
Sanders kept the fast pace going on the
second lap, and Carr was only able to make
up four seconds. When Carr went through the
pit area, he yelled out to his mechanic that he
had no rear brakes. His fast-thinking mechanic grabbed some water jugs and ran to the
next open area. Carr saw him and quickly
pulled over, waiting while water was poured
on his brakes.
"I would pull over every lap to get water
poured on my rear brakes, but the time was
worth it," noted Carr.
Once Carr had brakes again, he made up
more time on Sanders. When Sanders ended
the third lap, he had only a nine-second lead
on Carr. Third-placed Poteete had dropped off
the pace and was now one minute and 30 seconds behind the lead duo. Just behind
Poteete, a battle for fourth raged between
Duke and Josh Scott.
Carr chased down Sanders and stuck to
him like glue all through the fourth lap.
"I was looking for every place I could make
a pass, because I knew we had at least two
more laps to go," said Carr.
On the next lap, the Wiseco/Renthal/UNI/
Scott/Clarke-sponsored Carr made the pass
on Sanders for the lead and turned in his
fastest lap of the day.
"When Clint caught me," commented
Sanders, "I tried to hold him off, but he made
a clean pass and steadily pulled away."
Carr continued to put more and more time
between himself and Sanders, ending the sixth
lap with a 50-second lead. Carr and Sanders
came in at the end of the sixth lap just under
the two-hour mark and were the only two riders to ride a seventh lap.
At the end of the race, Carr took the overall win, and Sanders received second. Third
overall went to Kyle Henderson, followed by
Poteete, who suffered a flat on the last lap of
the race but still captured fourth.
Sturkie Road: Clint Carr scored the overall victory at round four of the
Arkansas Hare Scrambles Championship Series in Salem.

RMXAlAMA District 25 Loretta Lynn's Quailifer
Two Rivers Raceway
Karlsen, Risner Rise
to the Occasion
By JOHN CUFFORD
MILUKEN, CO, MAY 10-11
Almost 1200 riders showed up to "Rumble in
the Rockies!" The racers all came out to qualify for the trip to Loretta Lynn's in Tennessee
for the Amateur Nationals. The Two Rivers
Raceway (a.k.a. "The Farm") supported this
record crowd in style, and racers came from
all the surrounding states and from as far
away as New York, Iowa and Texas. Radio
station 94.3Z, Gemsey/Wheeler Ford, Energy
Drink XS, Go Fast, Big T Racing, Fay Myers,
Colorado Powersports, Tri-City Cycles, and JS
Proformance were all on hand, as were Fox
rep Doug Brown, Spy rep Derek Brown, HRP
Sports rep John Clifford, and one of the fastest
women in the world, Tania Satchwell. Birthday
boy Mark "Mile High Mouth" Woodard did his
usual magic at the microphone and also competed in the Senior class. Adam Daniels, one
of Iowa's fastest young Pros, came out to duel
with the Colorado's top Pros.
It rained all week before the race, and
monster ruts emerged from the soft trerrain,
challenging the riders' navagational skills.
Matt Karlsen of Colorado Powers ports
guided his Suzuki to two Pro wins, in the Over
25 and Open Pro classes. Karlsen also rode
his Yamaha to victory in the 250cc Pro class.
Only KTM jockey Billy Dotson stopped the
Karlsen Money Train. Dotson rode two excellent motos in the 125cc A class, holding back
Karlsen, Chad ZuJian, Aaron Wesinger and
Daniels.
Todd Bannister used quick starts and solid
rides for two wins and was the "Mini King for
the Day." His 65cc (10-1,1) performance was
a dominating display for the Mini pilot. Then
the battle he waged with KTM-mounted Casey
Schrlock in the 85cc class was a classic, winning the second moto and taking top honors.
lach Larson continued his winning ways
in the 80cc (14-15) class. Larson's races
involved hard work; late passes on Braden
Barnes and Mike Henderson garnered Larson
the victory.
Bryant Humiston won the 65cc (7 -9) class,
over Austyn Keller, Vernon O'Shea, Andrew
Witmer and Paul Johnson.
Michael Risner bested racers Kevin Drieth,
Erik Rud, David McNeal and Shawn Bandel
after some close racing in the Over 25 B/C
class. Risner didn't nab the holeshot, but he
moved into the lead and then hung on despite
the pressure from the rest of the riders.
When the former Women's National
Champion hits the track, the other ladies had
best be motoring. Tania Satchwell used world·
class speed to pass Lindsey Jelitto, Ashley
Bonham, Kelley Springs and Kelly Longwell
for a well-deserved overall win, and her performance was a pleasure to watch. Jelitto and
Bonham are not used to following; both riders
were pushing but couldn't match Satchwell's
pace.
John Merwin rolled in from Wyoming to
top the Over 30 A class, ahead of local racers
Darrell Miller, Corey Cope, Alan Angeiopulos,
and fast starter Bryan Sabbaugh, who snared
the holeshot in both motos and put in big
efforts among the big talent. Angelopulos, a
Colorado State Supercross champ who once
qualifed for the Indy Supercross, came out
and pushed the leaders, finishing fourth.
Cope held his own in many classes: He
placed third in the Over 30 Pro class, third in
the 250cc Pro class, and second in the Open
Pro class. Everyone of Cope's races was
intense, and his battles with other riders were
usually the biggest battles in the race.
The 125cc B riders rode all out, Loretta
Lynn's style, and Suzuki jockey Mark Graddy
took top honors. Adam Harvey, Trevor Monks,
Lance Hiser and Dalton Dimick all set a blistering pace and looked ready to go to the
Nationals.
Todd Homing was the "Thunder King." He
motored his way to victory in the Open FourStroke class. Tri-City Cycles' Dimick, who just
moved up off the 80 this year, took an amazing second. Brian Sharp, who won the Over
40 Pro class, pounded out a third-place finish,
ahead of Lyle Shrock and Thadius Baxter.
The Two Rivers Racing crew did a spectac1uar job during a tough week and hosted one
of the largest motocross races in Colorado's
history. Good luck to all the Loretta Lynn's
qualifiers at their next rounds.
