Brad pulled off a double play in the 200cc Amateur division with two first-place finishes on his Dadbacked Yamaha. On courses that favored bigger-bore bikes, Dal Trubey cranked all the horsepower he could out of his Yamaha in the Vet (Over 30) 250cc Expert class. Dal took top overall honors for the Vet Expert line on Saturday, ahead of Open-bike rider Paul Shafer, who finished second overall and first in the Vet Open Expert class. Dal finished second overall and second in class, behind Sean Bradley, on Sunday, giving him the two-day overall bragging rights. Richie Wohlers "assumed the position" and claimed the two-day overall prize in the Open Amateur class on his No Toil/Gaerne-backed Honda. KTM pilot Matt Weichers swalled the competition to claim the Open Novice overall award. Brell Saunders and Kyle Smith are two of District 37's finest. Saunders came out on top of the 200cc Expert division, and Smith was top dog among the 200cc Novices. The Senior Amateur classes had clear front-runners on both days. Rob Myerly hit a double with two first-place finishes in the Senior Open Amateur class, and Ken Hansing doubled up on firsts in the Senior 250cc Amateur class. Other top overall finishers included Anna Jo Segale in the Women's Expert class, Arnie Mann in the Amateur Women's class, and Heather Cole in the Novice Women's class. A few moms, such as Pam Pearson, spent their Mother's Day out in the desert, racing. Pearson rode her first race ever on Sunday, and while she may not have won her division, she put her bike and body to the test and finished, and ultimately that's what desert racing is all about! Riders' Spring Shootout Series Round 11: Dixie MX Mason Leads Dixie Lineup By HOGH GATUN OZARK, AL, MAY 4 The second annual Riders' Spring Shootout Series hit the home stretch at Dixie MX, site of the 11th of 13 rounds. In Supermini competition, Adams Motorsports/Sinasalo~backed Kendall Mason led a Suzuki sweep of the top five positions. Cycle Nation-assisted Cole Cherpak led the first Supermini moto, followed by Mason, Christian Trammel and Dylan Hammonds. Mason tried to keep Cherpak in sight, but then the Yamaha rider picked up the pace and began to pull away. Hammonds got by Trammelon lap three. The race appeared to be a done deal; then Cherpak got out of shape and was slammed bodily into the face of the Canyon Jump. Mason rode past for the win. ahead of Hammonds. Trammel's third place ride came to a halt when his chain snapped in two; Blake George took over the position. Cherpak was a DNS for race two. Mason ran out front from the beginning and cruised to the win. Trammel had his hands full with Hammonds in the struggle for second. George and Honda·mounted Jonathan White ran close for fourth. Trammel held on to the runner-up spot, and White dropped out with mechanical trouble. Clay Jackson (4-6) and Tim Chumley (6-5) rounded out the top five, behind Mason, Hammonds and George. The top five riders in the 85cc Beginner class repeated their finishes in both motos. Lynn Haven, Florida's Thomas Lau guided his Kawasaki to the victory, ahead of a trio of Suzukis ridden by Jackson, George and Chumley. Series competitor Chandler Hudson was a steady fifth on his Yamaha. YZ125-mounted Rhett Peel finished ahead of a pack of 250cc machines in the Over 30/0ver 40 contest. In moto one, he was a full straight ahead of Michael Hare, Dwayne Marks and Joe Wilson at the checkers. Peel started out front in moto two. Hare challenged Chuck Branson for second before he ran off the track. Marks moved to third_ Peel scored another win. although Branson and Marks' battle brought them closer to him at the finish. Then Hare's bike quit in the middle of the track late in the race. Wilson placed fourth, ahead of John Broome, Panama City. Florida's Randy Cornelius made it two wins in a row in the 250cc D class at Dixie. In moto one, he gated fourth, and then he moved to second over a tabletop. Leader Justin Bryant stayed out of his reach and picked up the win. Danny Kirkendoll brought his Honda in third, ahead of Mark Wilson's KTM. Bryant showed the way in heat two, while Cornelius moved forward from a fifth-place start. On lap three, Bryant surrendered the lead to Wilson and also gave way to a charg~ ing Cornelius. Next, Cornelius stormed past Wilson in the whoop section. The trio came across the finish line nose to tail. Riding a 1995 CR250, Don Bush (6-4) knocked Kelly Waiton (5-5) out of a trophy position with fifth overall. Fain's Department of Exterior-assisted Trammel bagged the win in the 85cc (7-1 I) and (12-15) contest. In moto one, Mason dominated the field, winning by half a lap. Trammel started fifth and advanced to second. White brought his Honda in third. Mason didn't appear on the track until halfway through race two; he had suffered a fouled plug. Trammel held the point, with Hammonds breathing down his neck. White ran alone in third. At one point, Hammonds got by the leader, but he couldn't make the pass stick. Trammel motored his KX back out front for the win. Slocomb, Alabama's William Waters claimed fourth on his KTM. Dixie MX Ozark, Alabama Results: May 4, 2003 (Round 11 of 13) P/W 50: I. By KANDY THORNTON RED MOUNTAIN, CA, MAY 10-11 Luke Dodson was the one of the "bad boys" at the 34th running of the Badgers MC "Mother's Day Cop Out" held at Red Mountaln, California. The Badgers traditionally hold their two days of Dual European Scrambles racing on Mother's Day Weekend, and the chance to earn two sets of points in one weekend had 730 participants "coppin' out" to their moms. Dodson and Nicholas Blais played copsand-robbers all weekend, trading the role of pursuer and pursued. Blais took the win on Saturday in the 250cc Expert class aboard his BlaisRacing.com/Mid-Cities Honda, but Dodson made sure he felt the presence of his VSKrrwo Trickrrorco Suzuki. "I made a mistake on Saturday, and Blais got me," said Dodson, who didn't make any mistakes on Sunday when he and Blais battled it out on the B course. "This course was pretty fast and rough. I was running third overall off the bomb, but the four-stroke bikes of Chris Blais, Jason Trubey and Paul Krause were just blowing by me in the fast sections. Nick Blais got me yesterday, and today I got him." Dodson's second- and first-place finishes let him ride away with the two-day overall trophy, just ahead of Blais. Chris and Scolls PerformancelO'Neal1 ESP-backed Yamaha rider Jason Trubey battled all weekend in the Four-Stroke Expert division. Honda-mounted Chris double-dipped this weekend, taking first place both days, but Trubey never gave him a minute's rest, especially during Sunday's race. Trubey was consistently showing Blais a wheel on the B course; they finished third and fourth overall, behind Mike Childress and Steve Hengeveld, who finished first and second, respectively, in the Open Expert class. Trubey added two sets of second-place points to his tally in the FourStroke Expert division. Childress was the crowd·pleaser with his finish-line jumps on all three laps of this 12-mile course. Fifteen-year-old Nick Hamill enjoyed his own doubleheader, dominating the Mini Expert division aboard his GearHead/BRP/ Goat Kawasaki. "Both of the courses this weekend were fun," said Hamill. "It was hard to hang in the fast stuff on an 85. I'd get past some of the older guys out there, and they would just blow by me in the fast sections." Hamill prelly much led both days from the holeshot off the bomb to the finish. He was clearly the dominant force on Saturday on his Dad-backed Kawasaki. "I got out in front right off the bomb on Saturday," stated Argubright, "but I got a little lost after the second check. Overall, this course was awesome!" Argubright finished second, right behind Yamaha jockey Chris Bell, on Sunday, which was enough to give him the two-day overall title. Father-and-son riders Mike and Brad Price will see their names proudly displayed on next year's event T-shirts.
