AM. District 37 Desert Championship Series Round 8: Vikings MC Hare & Hound WfI\N Vogt Nails Virgin Voyage By KANDY THORNTON LUCERNE VALLEY, CA. APR. 27 The Vikings MC Virgin Voyage Hare f, Hound is aptly named, because "virgin terrain" in desert racing means one thing - you can't leave a trail behind on the rocks. The Vikings tradjtionally have one of the most technically challenging courses in the AMA District 37 Desert Series, and this year was no exception. The Vikings managed to put together two 40mile loops that had a great mix of virgin terrain, singletrack, and an absence of whoops. It was a fight to the finish for the top overall Amateur position, and Jeff Vogt managed to put the hammer down and finish first on his Wilson's MC/Cycle Gear/Precision Concepts Honda 650, over Pete Cochran's XR650. "Cochran and I were dicing. and he passed me about a mile from the finish," recalled Vogt. "I knew there was only about a mile to go, so I pinned it and got him about 500 yards before the finish!" Besides the overall Amateur bragging rights, Vogt finished first in the Four-Stroke Amateur class, while Cochran took top honors in the Vet Open Amateur c1ass_ Matt lang and Brett Huntzinger were also dueling it out in the Amateur class. "I was able to make the pass on Huntzinger about 10 miles from the finish," stated the 15-year-oid Zang. "I was finaily abie to get by him about 10 miles from the finish. This was a great course. I had more fun at this race than most others I have raced. to Zang finished first in the 250cc Amateur class. and Huntzinger claimed the top 200cc Amateur win. Meanwhile, the Novice class had its own three-way war raging among Christopher Sa, Charles Howard and Rick Myers. These top three Novices battled it out from the bomb to the finish. "On the first loop, once we got out into the open, we were pretty much riding single file, to recounted Sa. "I was behind Myers going into the pits and was able to take the Novice lead after the pits. Howard was right behind me and got by me when I made a mistake and kind of bounced off the trail; we passed each other a couple oftimes before the finish after that. to ") was running fifth or sixth into the pits to stated Howard. "We were mixing it up pretty good the last 10 miles - me, Sa and Myers. I AM: 1. Su$ana Jones (KTM). VET OPEN AM: I. Peter Cochran (Han); 2. Travis Epperson had a really bad start, so I'm happy with the finish today." Sa hung on for the first overall Novice position and first in the Open Novice class on his CRF450R. Honda pilot Howard finished second overall Novice and first in the FourStroke Novice class. Myers rounded out the top three overall Novice positions and also took top honors in the Vet 250cc division, aboard his GPR/White Brothers-backed Kawasaki. "I was running first overall and lost it right out of the pits," said Myers. "I just couldn't hang on anymore. I started cramping up, and Sa and Howard both got by me, and I knew I couldn't catch them. I used most of my energy up on the first loop, where I hit a road crossing and did a perfect Flying W!" Supermotanl USA North Series Oakland Valley Race Park Gartner Throws Down the Gauntlet! By ERIC HICKS CUDDEBACKVILLE, NY, MAY 3 Luckily for Supermoto racers in the Northeast, the weathermen had no idea what they were talking about! The prediction was for rain and cold weather in New York, but instead there was sunshine - and some smoking racing. Several racers were sporting the latest and greatest Supermotard weaponry. How does the saying go? "It's not how big your stick is, but how hard you swing it." That said, all were ready to put it down for 2003 and provide the fans with some exciting racing! In the Mini Motard event, Monty Warsing lined up on the pole and absconded with the holeshot. The Yamaha-mounted Warsing led Suzuki jockey Joseph Ciampi and SMUSA organizer Jason Slutsky, on his Yamaha TTR 125. That was how it would stay - until the first turn into the dirt section, where Warsing lost the front, and it was over. Scott Alkinburgh took third. Joseph Ciampia, on his Yamaha 250F, won both the heat and final races in the lightweight classes. Yamaha-mounted, ] 6-year-old Scott Rounds threatened but aHowed Hondamounted Dennis Espinoza to get by. In the Open class, Lance Johnson came out swinging; showing that his ice racing over the winter had paid off big time by leading 11 out of 12 laps! It iooked as though Johnson would stop the Cannondale win streak, but he couldn't hold Bill Gartner off for one more lap. Gartner passed at the second-to-Iast tum and took the win.
