Carolina Ultra Series Round 4: Devils Ridge Motocross Glen Helen Raceway Park: Sebastien Tortelli was the overall 250cc Pro winner at the REM No Fear Spring Series finale in San Bernardino, California. Walker, Welch Squelch 'em By MATTHEW MORETZ REM No Fear Spring Series Final Round: Glen Helen Raceway Parle Tortelli Triumphant! such notable names as Suzuki's David Pingree, Team KTM Red Bull's Steve Boniface, French import Mathieu Lalloz, Honda's Tim Weigand, Canadian snowmobile and motocross star Tucker Hibbard, and Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Justin Mace. Boniface was simply unstoppable: When the dust settled, he had stormed to both moto wins and the overall honors on the day. Pingree chased him home both times out for second overall with a 2-2 score, while Weigand (3-4) was third. Japan's Kurado Toda was fourth with a 6-3 tally, and Hibbard (4-6) filled out the top five slots. Honda-mounted Josh Grant looked tough to beat in the 125cc Intermediate division: he took home the overall class win on the day with a 2-1 posted on the scoreboard. Grant was chased by a pair of KTM riders all day, as Derrek Murphy (1-2) was second overall, and Tyler Keefe (3-3) was third. Sean Borkenhagen (4-5) and Chuck Henson (5-6) were fourth and fifth. In the Over 40 Intermediate ranks, Bryan Daniel sealed up his series class championship with a two-mota sweep to earn the overall win for the day. Daniel got good starts in both motos and went unheaded to the checkered flag both times out aboard his Honda CRF450R. Thad Friday (2-2) was second overall, Chris Alamangos (4-3) went home third, Dan Alamangos (3-4) was fourth, and Rudy Chavez (5-5) claimed fifth. The 125cc Beginner series winner, Freddy Sanchez, also turned in a perfect two-mota sweep aboard his NCY KTM SX 125 to nab the overall win on the day as well as a class championship. Justin Lewis (2-2) was the best of the rest, while Jamison Mclain (4-3) went home with the third-place brass. Kawasaki rider Alison Jones finished up in fourth with 5-4 rides, and Kyle Morrison took fifth place with an 8-6 effort. Taylor Freeman took the overall class win on the day in the aGee Beginner class with a 2-1 score, which locked up a series championship for him, as well. Sean Friday (5-2) was runner-up, with Zach Linden (4-3) third. Mark Johnson (3-4) took fourth, while Caden Probst ( I -6) filled out the top five. By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA. APR. 26 The fifth annual Racing Enterprises Motorsports No Fear Spring Series, sponsored by No Fear, Smith, Renthal. One Industries. Motul, MTA West, ARC Levers, TAG. KTM. Pro Valve Motocross Race Service, AMP Bed Xtender, Motoman, White Brothers, VP Fuels, Wiseco, N-Style, Cometic, CEET, Factory R&D, Mechanix Wear, Light Speed, Acerbis, and Pro Circuit, featured some excellent racing in the professional ranks this year, and the series finale was no exception. Many of the nation's best riders were in Southern California to prepare for the opening round of the AMA National Motocross Series to be held in a couple of weeks at Glen Helen, and more than a few of them turned up at round six of the series to get in some last-minute testing on an excellent outdoor track. In the 250cc Pro division, Team SoBe Suzuki's Sebastian Tortelli eventually took home the overall win after lengthy battles with Team Red Bull KTM's Grant Langston each time out. In the first moto, Langston's KTM teammate Joaquin Rodrigues shot out front with the holeshot aboard his SX 250. Langston tucked up right behind him. just in front of Tortelli. Rodrigues held the point for two laps before Langston slipped by him on lap three. T ortelli followed suit on the next lap and then immediately proceeded to hound Langston for the lead. Langston held him off for most of the race, but eventually Tortelli found a way past him and took off from there. Both Langston and TorteUi have just returned to their bikes after lengthy struggles with injuries endured during the supercross season, and it appeared that their fitness levels have not yet returned to where they should be. Nevertheless, both riders looked superfast, and near the end of the moto it appeared that Tortelli was able to maintain his pace a little better than Langston. When the checkered flag came out, Tortelli saw it first for the win. Langston was second, while Rodrigues was third, in front of Callaway Honda/Pro Valve rider Mark Tilley. In moto two, Langston ripped the holeshot, with Tortelli in tow. Langston again held the point for most of the race, only to have T ortelli pass him late in the contest. Once Tortelli got out front, he pulled away for an easy win. Langston was again second, while Rodrigues rode in third. On the day, Tortelli's I-I finishes were good for the overall win. Langston (2-2) was next best, and Rodrigues (3-3) was third. The 125cc Pro class was stacked with 68 JUNE 4, 2003' eye I .. SANDFORD,NC,APR.27 On April 27, Devils Ridge Motocross hosted round four of the Carolina Ultra Series. More than 458 riders were ready to compete on a glorious day. Every time Devils Ridge has a race, there's always something different around the tracks. This time it was a nice, new fence in the mechanics' area to keep specta· tors safe, and there were even some nice flow· ers around the scoring tower. The racing in the 250cc Pro class started with Tom Welch out front, while Kevin Walker. Blake Hovis, Nicholas Burns and Robby Motsinger followed. Walker wasted no time making the pass on Welch for the lead. Doug Earls charged hard and set his sights on Motsinger: Earls pushed hard and was able to make the pass for fifth. Bums was riding hard, and he closed the gap on Hovis, but he just wasn't able to get by. Way out front, Walker went down; by the time he was back under way, he had fallen to sixth place. In the second moto, Walker got the holeshot, with Welch, HOVis, Bums and Jason Wiley chasing him down. Right off the bat, Wiley bobbled, and Mark Wagner made the pass for fifth. Welch was doing a good job of keeping within striking distance of Walker. Hovis had his hands full with Burns. That's how it stayed the whole moto - until the last lap, when Wagner made a mistake and Wiley pasted him back for fifth. The overall order was Welch, Hovis, Walker, Burns and Earls. In the 125cc Pro class, Walker pulled the holeshot, with Wiley, Hovis, Welch and Motsinger followed. Walker stalled his bike and fell to fourth, while Aaron Stancil made the pass on Motsinger for fifth. Walker charged back past everyone who'd pasted him and took the lead again and never looked back. Hovis made the pass on Wiley after he gave him a little love tap. and now he had Welch to deal with. Wiley was able to hold off Welch until the last lap, when Welch found a hole and passed Wiley with ease. In the second moto, Walker pulled the holeshot again. Welch, Stancil, Wiley and Earls hoped he would make a mistake - but not this time, fellows. The mistake came from Wiley, who went down hard. Hovis was charging hard, recovering from a bad start. and he started putting the pressure on Earls, and then he made the pass clean. Hovis kept up his momentum and closed the gap to Stancil, and then he made the pass on the last lap. The overall order was Walker, Welch, Hovis, Stancil and Earls. in the first moto of the Schoolboy class, Chris Osborne pulled the holeshot, with Joshua Schmitt, Stephen Cooke, Jonathan Belfour and Thomas Bullock chasing him down. Osbome and Schmitt got together and went down early in the moto. Cooke then inherited the lead and started putting some distance on Belfour in second. Osborne and Schmitt recovered and were charging hard to get back up front. Osborne had no problems passing Belfour, and then he set his sights on Cooke. Schmitt finally made the pass on Belfour but ran out of time to make the pass on Cooke. The overall order was Osborne, Schmitt, Cooke, Geoffrey Nance and Dale Davis. Osborne also went on to win both motos of the I 25cc B class. Glen Helen Raceway Park San Bernardino, California Results, April 26. 2003 (Final Round) 65 BEG: I. Bl1ld Pappalardo (Kaw): 2.
