By MARK BUCHANAN Honey Lake Motocross Park: John and Tom Bogus prepare for a tight left-hand turn at the opening round of the AMA Western National Sidecar Motocross Series in Milford, California. followed by Wenzel [, Shane. The Bogus brothers were third. The start of mota two was exactly the same as the first, with Upfield £, Holmes· now with a functioning front brake - taking the lead, followed by the Bogus brothers and then Wenzel [, Shane. As the moto progressed. Upfield [, Holmes displayed their dominance by motoring away from the other teams, leav· ing the others to quarrel over the remaining positions. Wenzel &- Shane, on their Wasp Yamaha· a machine that could be heard everywhere around the racetrack . eventually worked their way past the Bogus brothers to take over second place. The brothers stalked them, trying to repass them before the finish, but it was not to be. When the checkered fiag came out, the finishing order was Upfield £, Holmes in first, Wenzel f., Shane taking sec· and. and the Bogus brothers rounding out the field in third. It was a wonderful day of sidecar motocross. Round two of the series will be held in Kernville, California, in June. Results By DUKE EARUMART MILFORD, CA. APR. 27 Malcolm Upfield and Pat Holmes used their EML-Jumbo sidecar rig to good effect at the opening round of the AMA Western National Sidecar Motocross Series, held at Larry and Lisa Wosick's Honey Lake MX Park in Milford, California. The team was unstoppable. leading almost every lap of both motos, showering dirt from every tum and leaping over every jump on the well· prepared and perfectly sidecar· friendly circuit. Even a broken front brake arm in the first moto couldn't slow their charge. Further back was the team of Allen Wenzel [, Kelley Shane. on their Wasp-Yamaha, and then came Utah's constantly improving Bogus brothers, John and Tom, on their EML-Honda outfit, in thjrd. At the start of moto one, there was commotion as the teams all charged up the long, sweeping start straight toward the tight, righthand first turn. Upfield [, Holmes got there first, followed closely by the Bogus brothers and Wenzel £, Shane. Watching the teams come into that first tum was breathtaking, as each passenger leaped into position to help corner the machines. The three teams jockeyed for position, with Upfield f, Holmes using their edge to take the lead, and the experienced teammates wasted no time taking charge and leading the way. Further back, a duel erupted between the Bogus brothers and Wenzel £, Shane; it was short lived, as one lap later, the Bogus brothers bobbled entering an off-camber tum, letting Wenzel [, Shane by. By now, Upfield [, Holmes had a sizable lead, but they were about to be sidelined, temporarily, by a bro· ken front brake arm. This let Wenzel [, Shane into the lead, for a single lap - the only lap not led by Upfield [, Holmes. Quickly, Upfield [, Holmes rejoined the fray, and by the last lap they were leading again, sans a front brake. At the finish, Upfield [, Holmes took first, 76 JUNE 4, 2003' Midway Motorsports Park II: U II: • III ('SHIP Cl: I. Malcolm Upfi!'!ld/P8t Holmes (EML·Jum); 2. The second Expert qualifier was a show· case for Canadians Beattie and Beaulac. Beat· tie found the remaining moisture in the quickly drying dirt for the win and the pole position for the 750cc main. K.C. Knodel, A.J. Eslick, Cory McDermitt and Dave Rayburn earned their tickets to the main. Beaulac's win in the first 505cc heat showed that he continues to be a force to be reckoned with. Rob Williams, Beattie and Brian Vincent would follow Beaulac to the main. McDermitt upheld the honor of the rae· ers from Michigan by getting the better of Jeff Landrum and Mees. Evans duplicated Beaulac's effort with a heat win of his own. Sam Lowe, Italia and Henry Wiles picked up the last four tickets to the 505cc Expert main. The 505cc Expert main took two tries to get started. Lowe, Landrum and Vincent fell in turns one and two, bringing out the red. Beaulac and Evans came to the front for the money. Beaulac circulated the track a few feet in front of Evans, who seemed a bit unsettled with the way his Honda was handling. A fresh face in the winners' circle was Michigan's Wiles. The 750cc main was also red-fiagged, but Rayburn repaired his mount in time to re-join the field. Roeder was on the point, with Evans and Beattie in tow. Evans pulled away for the win, with Beattie second and Beaulac third. Electrical problems held Roeder to fourth. Mees bested Vames and Eades for fifth. Steve Beattie and Dominic Beaulac joined Evans in the win· ners' circle for the first Canadian sweep at Springfield. Beaulac started off the day by getting the better of Evans in the 505cc Expert main. Henry Wiles eamed the show spot to keep the Canadians from sweeping the single·cylinder Expert final. The event at Springfield marked the 40th anniversary of racing events held at a venue that was once an airport after World War II. The Dayton Motorcycle Club used the event to honor longtime promoter Carl Dice, who was the driving force behind Championship Racing Enterprises before he passed away this past year. Scratch heats provided the lineups for the beginning of the elimination portion of the day's program. Reminiscent of Dayton in 200l, half mile specialists George Roeder and Evans ended up in the same heat. The long· time adversaries for the ownership of Ohio half miles used the event to check different Jines and angles of attack.
