Murphy
Magnificent!
By JIM P. SANDERSON
CUFFORD, PA, MAY 3
Just over 200 motocross enthusiasts came
out to the Hurricane Hills Sports Center for a
Saturday race featuring 25 classes on the long
and loamy racecourse. This was a warm-up to
round three of the Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classk Motocross Series, to be held the
following day.
Yamaha pilot Brian Murphy magnificently
crushed the competition in the fast and
extremely competitive 125cc Amateur class
with a couple of 1·1 rides. Murphy blasted off
the gate ahead of the rest of the pack in the
first moto and went wire to wire for the win,
finishing the moto with a whopping 21·second
advantage.
Murphy rounded the ninety-degree left first
tum with the lead and the rest of the pack in
tow. Second through fifth off the start were
David Rockafeller, Dan Zabrowski, Bryan
Fleischman and Peter Katsoules. After a quarter of a lap, Katsoules got around Fleischman
to take fourth.
Murphy had a six-second lead after only
2 1/2 laps. Rockafeller crashed in the downhill rhythm section on lap two. Zabrowski
inherited second. with Katsoules now third,
Scott Sears fourth and Fleischman fifth. Sears
charged to the front and made the pass on
Katsoules to take third just before the start of
lap three. Sears then chased down Zabrowski,
making the pass for second. Shortly after the
pass, Zabrowski and Sears cross·rutted in the
big sweeper tum by the start, allowing Katsoules to move by to take second. Sears
re'mounted third. Eric Bartholomew inherited
fourth, and Chris Pepe was fifth.
By lap four, Murphy had checked out with
a 16-second advantage. The only battle left
was for runner-up. and Sears closed the gap
on Katsoules but just couldn't make a pass
before the checkered flag flew. Murphy took
the win. with Katsoules, Sears, Pepe and
Zabrowski trailing.
Murphy didn't have it so easy in the second moto. Gating third off the start, Murphy
worked his way to second by lap two but had
to bide his time to take the lead from the very
fast Kawasaki ride of Sears.
Katsoules led the start, with Sears, Murphy, Steve Grossweiler and Pepe in tow. Sears
had the point by the second tum of lap two.
Katsoules dropped to second. Then Murphy
and Grossweiler passed Katsoules to take sec·
ond and third, relegating Katsoules to fourth.
Pepe was a solid fifth. Less than a lap later,
Katsoules passed Grossweiler back for third,
dropping Grossweiler to fourth.
Sears had a five·second lead by the third
lap, but Murphy began to chip away at it,
reducing Sears' lead to a bikelength by the
white flag. Murphy passed Sears for the lead
with less than a lap to go and held on for the
win, with Sears, Katsoules, Pepe and Fleis·
chman trailing.
Murphy topped the 'I 25cc Amateur podi·
um with a ).) score. Sears took runner-up
with a 3-2 tally, and Katsouies rounded out
the podium with a 2-3 score.
Nate Leatherman's consistent 2·2 rides
earned him the overall in the 250cc Novice
class. Leatherman never really had a chance
at the first·moto win, as Eugene Denaples led
the start and went wire to wire for the win. Don
Knapp, Leatherman, Nicholas Weber and
Jason Boyko followed. Boyko moved all the
way to second after only half a lap. Weber was
third, Leatherman dropped to fourth, and Mar·
tin Kushner was fifth. Lelltherman passed
Weber for second on lap three, dropping
Weber to third. Denaples crossed the finish
line with a six-second lead for the first-moto
win, with Leath-erman, Boyko, Weber and
Kushner trailing.
However, in the second moto, Denaples
led the start again but pulled off the racecourse after only a quarter-lap with a mechanical problem. Leatherman gated third off the
start. Weber inherited the lead, and Leatherman was now second, with David Dillon third,
Kushner fourth and Knapp fifth. Leatherman
passed Weber for the lead just after the start of
the last lap but went down attempting to jump
the downhill tabletop less than half a lap later,
handing the lead and the moto win to Weber.
Rounding out the top five were Kushner,
Boyko and Dillon.
Leatherman's 2·2 tally scored the overall
victory. Weber's 4-) score earned him the
runner-up position, and Boyko rounded out
the podium with his 3-4 tally.
