The Suzuki jockey conquered round two of the SERA Hare Scrambles Series, adding yet another win to his SERA winning streak, as Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club hosted the first of its two hare scrambles on April 27. In a valley of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains sits Reynolds' Pasture, the central locale of the club. The open field is surrounded by more than 3500 acres of some of the toughest trails In the SERA circuit. The rocky terrain became even more challenging after receiving five inches of rain in the week prior to the race, but the sun was shining on Sunday morning, and more than 180 riders showed up. The trail started in a soggy field. Riders were then sent into a muddy, 90·degree tum, where most literally lost sight of what they were doing. Goggles don't work when well covered in mud; some riders who rode without tear·offs were forced to sling off the muddy spectacles and ride with naked eyes. After the mud·slinging, they went into a grasstrack, which eventually led them to the woods and hills. They were in for six wonderful laps around a 7-mile course. Due to the mud, some trails were altered slightly to prevent rid· ers from getting stuck. Local legend Landon Carter, a Suzukimounted AA rider and last year's overall hare scrambles champion, took the lead on the first lap, but he wasn't able to hold on to it for long. The competition in the SERA A classes are n e vv s fierce. These boys can ride! SERA definitely has some of the fastest riders in the sport today. Right on Carter's tail were AA rider Stephen Reed and another hometown favorite, Open A rider Cliff Ousley. They didn't give Carter much room for error. After Carter's RM250 met up with a pine tree (a definite error), Ousley took over first on his Yamaha on the second lap. with Reed breathing down his neck. On lap three, Reed took over and dominated the remainder of the race on his Hatties· burg Cycles RM250, finishing the lap in only 19 minutes and 35 seconds· more than a minute in front of Ousley and Carter. Open A rider Taylor Reynolds picked up the pace on his Suzuki on lap four, trying to catch up with Reed, but he fell 16 seconds short. Trying even harder on lap five, young Reynolds only gained three seconds on Reed. Ousley came alive on lap six with the fastest lap time of the whole race - an impres· sive 19 minutes and 12 seconds· but it was a little late for him to recapture first place. Reed won overall in one hour and 58 seconds. Coming in one minute and two seconds later was Ousley, with Carter 40 seconds behind him. Reynolds finished next. Coming in fifth overall was AA rider Glen Myatt on his RM250. Reed later said that he had a great ride after recovering from an awful start. "When he lapped me on the third lap," an Open B rider said of Reed, "he was going so dang fast that it felt like I was riding in reverse!" Reed thanked his sponsors Hattiesburg Cycles, Moose and SRB Cycle Works. The kids' race started shortly afterward, and they, too, had their fair share of rocky hillclimbing to do. Billy Butler took first in the Pee Wee class, and Lane Hicks took first in the Beginner Pee Wee class. Then Jordyn DuBose was on the gas when the Intermediate class took off. This was 9-year-old DuBose's first class win of the season. Showing no mercy for the others, Slick Sanders placed first in the Vet Kids class with an exceptional finish, leaving Zach Steele in second. Tyler Carter captured third after fiip. ping off the start line. All in all, it turned out to be a beautiful day, with lots of mud-slinging, rock-climbing action. Needless to say, Michelin's stock will probably go up this week, as these awesome bikes get prepared for the next round, which will be held May 18 in Meridian, Mississippi, as the Ridge Runners Enduro Team hosts the Bonita Lakes Hare Scrambles. Will Reed's winning streak be broken? Check out the SERA website at sera.dirtrider.net for more info on these crazy, tree-dodging SERA riders. c w w II: Z ~ C II: <3 > "' 5 ~~J~:Ds: Peny Mountain Hare Scrambles 1: Two-time SERA enduro champ Stephen Reed won round two of the SERA Hare Scrambles Series in Maplesville, Alabama_
