AMA 014 Michigan HS Series Round 1: Portland Trail Riders IIBUIJlICE SEIIES Dunlap Strikes First! 2003 12 By MARK SPORE PORTLAND, MI, APR. 27 Rou.nd one of the AMA District 14 Hare Scrambles Series took place yet again at the .,' sandy Portland Trail Riders facility in Portland, Michigan. Since the weather finally cooperated for an opening round this year, the rider turnout was tremendous, with nearly 400 riders showing up to take advantage of the sunny race conditions. Honda-mounted Bryan Dunlap showed up ready for battle and came away with his first career overall victory. Dunlap maintained a steady pace for the three 7:30AM to 7:30PM 1 to 3 man teams 6 teams to make a class hours and was able to take advantage of some mistakes made by his fellow competitors to score a well-deserved win. The Portland staff iaid out a tough 4-mile course, combining a sandy motocross track with some tight, rutted singletrack. Due to the unseasonably dry weather, dust was a factor, but the course workers did a great job of watering prior to and during the event. As this was the season opener, those competitors who failed to put in their winter training were physically drained at the end of the three-hour race. When the starting flag waved for the Expert class, KTM jockey Brian Marr absconded with the holeshot, earning the Shawmut Hills Sales $50 Holeshot Award. As the pack of Expert riders sorted themselves out, it was KTM~mounted Corey Parlin who emerged with the lead. Parlin, who is the defending series champion, pulled out a modest lead early on and began to distance himself from the rest of the field. Dunlap and KTM-mounted Corey Calkins kept Parlin honest as they approached the two-hour mark. On the 12th lap, Parlin plowed hard into a tree and was unable to continue. This gave Dunlap the break that he needed, as he had been slowly chipping away at Parlin's lead. "I could see that I was gaining on Parlin, and then I saw that he went down," stated Dunlap. "I just held on and concentrated on putting in some good laps in the last hour. I'm stoked to get my first overall win." Following Dunlap through scoring for second overall was Honda-mounted Travis Tudethout, who equaled his best overall finish to date. Tudethout admitted that the competition in the Expert class is pretty tight, and he was happy to pull off a second-place finish. Calkins followed in third, which is a good place to start his quest for the 2003 series championship. The top placing non~Expert came out of the 125cc class, as Clint Sumner used his Aclass-level motocross skills to take the class victory and fourth overall. Fifth overall went to Kyle McLeod, who easily won the Four~Stroke class aboard his Yamaha thumper. Honda pilot Scott Barclay came through scoring next, earning fourth in the Expert class and sixth overall on the day. Competition in the Heavy Team class was as fierce as ever, as several teams jockeyed for first place. The war was won by the Suzuki-mounted team of Gerrit Powell and Tim Beougher, who earned the class victory ahead of the Honda~mounted team of Rod Benjamin and Marty Schrauben, in second. Slipping through scoring just seven seconds behind Benjamin and Schrauben was the defending championship team of Eddie Keen and Ron Blazer, who piloted their Honda to a thirdplace finish.
