GNC Texas Series Round 1: Mosier Valley USA Smith Scores at Mosier By BRIAN COMEAU FORT WORTH, TX, APR. 13 The 31st running of the GNC Texas Series opened with a lot of excitement. as riders from across the state converged on Mosier Valley USA for round one of the five· race serjes. Zeb Smith started the day on fire. going three for three in the first motos. Smith picked up the overall in the 85cc (7 -11) class and was on his way to winning the 65cc Open event when a crash ended his day early. In the 125cc Novice class, Logan Melton came away with an upset win. Smith and Dakota Flores jumped out front in the first 85cc (7 -11) moto, with Tommy Miller trailing in third. By the end of the first lap, Flores and Miller were in a battle for second, ahead of Jonathan Cojocar. Smith was out front and pulling away, but behind him the battle for second was really healing up. Fiores and Miller tangled before the finish line on the third lap, and both went down. Miller was up and running faster, and he took over second; Flores remounted in third. When the white flag came out, the front-runners were all wellestablished. The only contest on the track was between Cojocar and Danny KinsaJl; the two raced to the checkers, with Cojocar beating out Kinsall for fourth. It was Smith up front once again in the second moto, ahead of Flores and Miller. Before the end of the first lap, Miller moved by Flores, while Cojocar was holding off Klnsall for fourth. Smith did his best to make this moto a sleeper, pulling away and winning by a large margin over Miller and Flores. The race for fourth went all the way to the last lap. where Kinsall picked up the position after Cojocar made a mistake. The pass secured fourth overall for Kinsall. Smith jumped out into the early lead, ahead of Zach Henry, in the first 65cc Open moto. Kinsall made his way into third, while Cojocar battled his way into fourth on the first lap. Preston Laye was charging hard toward the front, and he caught up to Cojocar, made the pass and set out after Kinsall. Laye was unable to close the gap between himself and Kinsall, settling into fourth by the end of the race. When the checkered flag came out, the field was very spread out, and Smith took the win, ahead of Henry and Kinsall. Laye and Cojocar rounded out the top five. Smith took the holeshot in the second moto, ahead of Henry and Bretton Engle. Kinsail moved into third early, and a mistake by Henry was all it took for the KTM rider to find himself in second. Henry went down again, dropping back to fourth. The moto completely changed on the third lap when Smith went down hard. Smith, who had won every moto he'd entered in the first half, was now out of the running completely; thjs put Kinsall in the lead, and when the checkers fell, he also had the overall. Second went to Engle, who didn't finish the first moto. This allowed Henry to pick up second overall with 2-4 finishes, ahead of Laye (4-3). Cojocar took fourth overall with a pair of fifth·place finishes. Mosier Valley USA: Logan Melton (36), Sean Cherry (945) and Justin Malcom (127) battle it out in a race that would decide the overall in the 125cc Novice class at the opening round of the 31st running of the GNC Texas Series in Fort Worth. 64 MAV21.2oo3· cue I III nu""s Jerrod Doss took the holeshot in the first 125cc Novice moto, ahead of Sean Cherry and Logan Melton. Cherry challenged Doss for the lead early, and he took it on the second lap. Outside the top three, Brandon Nichols and Justin Malcom were engaged in a heated battle for the fifth spot. Malcom made the pass for fourth, and by the third lap he was beginning to pressure Melton for third, but he ran out of time, and Cherry took the checkers ahead of Doss and Melton. H. McMillan took the holeshot in the second moto, ahead of Melton and Cherry. Malcom challenged Cherry early. and it became apparent this moto would be completely different from the first. McMillan was beginning to open up a lead as early as the second lap, but behind him a pack of riders was racing for second. Melton, Cherry and Malcom were locked in a close race that would playa major role in determining the overall. Cherry was the first to make a mistake, crashing and rejoining the race well outside the top 10. With Doss also running outside the top 10, Melton was in the driver's seat to take the overall. When the checkers came out, McMillan, who had fin~ ished 16th in the first moto, turned things around and took a convincing win. Behind him, Melton took first overall with a 3-2 tally. Malcom's 4·3 finishes gave him second over· all. Nichols edged out Michael Thacker for fourth, and Doss' 2-11 tally gave him fifth overall. Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier cedar Raceway Grant Conquers Cedar City By WINDY SUWVAN AND DICK GOODWIN CEDAR CITY, UT, APR. 13 Redlands, CaUfornia, racer Joshua Grant traveled up to Cedar City, Utah, for the Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier on April 13 and took on the J 25cc B Modified class. He trounced the field - twice - and took home the trophy. Pueblo, Colorado's Adam Harvey blasted off the gate to grab the opening-moto holeshot. Long Beach, California, hotshoe Andrew Bakken, Las Vegas' Kyle Partridge, Grant, and SI. George, Utah's Devin Sullivan comprised the pack chasing him. Partridge made a pass on Bakken, towing Grant along with him. Sullivan followed soon after. Partridge and Grant then pounced on Harvey, and both got by him before the first lap was history. Sullivan fought his way into third. and the top three started to build a lead. The battle for the lead was fierce until Partridge took a soil sample before the big triple jump and dropped from contention. Grant and Sullivan duked it out at close quarters for the rest of the race, Cedar Raceway: Bryce Stewart (240) and Levii Hall (893) battle it out in the 65cc (7-11) Modified class at the Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier in Cedar City, Utah.
