shouldn't be in. Expert sections are far more demanding on your body and, well, Runyards needs to get up on Monday morning. NITRO and District 17's Tim Detwiler had 17 dabs with 16 cleaned sections for third on the day. Iowa's very own Ray Cosgrove fin· ished the day with 18 dabs and 21 cleans. Old ISDT riders never lose that riding touch. The Intermediate and Novice classes each had more than seven riders in each class, with a half·dozen being first timers. Seven in a class is like 30 motocrossers on the line at once. Sections get backed up, and classes need to be split up after the first loop. Illinois' Tom Bledsoe won the Intermediate class with three dabs all day and 27 cleaned sections. Novice rider Tom Littlefield had three dabs and 24 cleans for first in Novice competition. Ralph Littlefield had eight _dabs and 23 cleans. According to Noel Smage, Ralph rode the Expert class in the 1980s. Cory Littlefield had 34 dabs in the Novice class. The only female competing, Sara Pranskunas, had 24 dabs and 18 cleans in Novice. Round two will be held on May 18 at Duker's Hole in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Stratton utilized the inside lines and his brakes on the fat, multilined track to take the lead, while Kandefer made do slipping his way into second place. Austin was next to work Robinson over for track position, followed quickly by Schmidt, who stole the fourth spot. Austin and Schmidt bumped grips for several laps at the end, and moto-one DNFer Robinson was digging for all he was worth and making a statement at the same time. Stratton (1- 1) cruised to another first overall, and Schmidt (3-4) capitalized on other riders' mistakes to claim second overall. Dieter (2-5) salvaged third overall, and Austin (5-3) limited out for fourth overall. Kandefer (7 -2) worked his way back up to round out the top five. Forty-seven 50cc riders enjoyed a day of fun in the spring sun, racing on top of Hogback Hill. The Pee Wee (4-8) class had 21 riders, and Jade Repass knocked the dust out of his winter blues by winning the first mota in which he competed in 2003. Jesse Repass (Jade's older brother) looked very strong while motoing his way up to second overall in the 125cc Amateur class; he is also compet· ing in the Four-Stroke class. The "Rushvilie Rocket," Connor Kelly, appears to be focusing his KTM efforts on tbe 50cc (7-8) class WNYMA title. Cody and Ryan Marriott are another wild pair of brothers competing fami· Iy-style in the 50cc classes. The next WNYMA race at Palmyra Racing Association's Hogback Hill will be May 25. 1) CHAMP: I. Round 3: Palmyra Racing Association They Found Their Thrill on Hogback Hill By LARRY WOOSTER PALMYRA,NY,APR.27 Western New York Motocross Association's third round drew just under 500 strong competitors to Palmyra Racing Association's "Hogback Hill" for Moose Racing Products Day number three. The Wayne County firstclass motocross facility was nearly the epicen· ter of a recent ice storm, but the Palmyra Rae· ing Association's members still had the track in top shape. "Gravity Cavity" and the uphill portion of the "Big Six Pack" were down for grooming and/or repair, but fear not, 500 WNYMA riders still found their thrill on Hogback Hill. Twenty-two 250cc/Open Experts dropped the hammer at the drop of the gate for mota one. Gary Michael took the lead through the chicane, with Brandon Kuhn, Aaron Dieter, Jamie Robinson and Palmyra's own Bruce Stratton scrambling for position in his wake. Dieter set Kuhn up for the pass for second and stayed on the gas to pass Michael as wei! and rocket out to take the lead. Stratton followed suit and weaved his way into the second spot in short order. Robinson put himself in contention until his ride went to the side and rele· gated him to a moto-one DNF. Dieter led the first two laps, with Stratton shadowing him, but on lap three Stratton made a classic cornering pass and. took the Palmyra Racing Association Palmyra. New York Results: April 27. 2003 (Round 3 of 29) lead over the big tabletop jump. Stratton laid down one-minute·and-29-second lap times as he maintained a three- or four-second lead over Dieter. Kuhn and Don Schmidt locked bars several times over several laps in the battle for third place. Brian Austin picked up his pace late in the moto, grabbing the fifth spot after a midpack start. Fast action was the name of the game, and that played out all the way throughout the big pack of Experts. Longtime National rider Stratton screamed to the checkered flag first with an eight-second lead over rising Northeast Regional Arenacross star Dieter. Schmidt sealed the deal for third, with Kuhn on his fender, while Austin held on to fifth. Canadian rider Jason Chatwood was sixth. Mota two looked like it would be a shootout between Stratton and Dieter, with any number of wild-card riders added in for excitement. However, while leading the 16·24 class, Dieter got bucked off his Suzuki and looked a little worse for wear exiting the track. When the gate dropped for the second 250cc/Open Expert moto, Michael again grabbed the holeshot and another Moose Rac· ing Product award. Chatwood was hanging on in second. Robinson and Stratton dueled it out through the chicane for third. Robinson was on the gas when the opportunity to shoot out front to lead the mota presented itself, and off he went. Andrew Carlson SANDERSON ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, APR. 27 Crossroads Powersports' Damien Plotts won the 250cc Open Pro/Expert class at round two of the Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Motocross Series, held on the sandy, technical racecourse of Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. Plotts traded wins with his RRP teammate Ty Wallace in the 250cc Pro/Expert class. Plotts' 1-2 rides earned him the overall, while Wallace's 3-1 score earned him runnerup honors. Barry Carsten rounded out the podium with a 2-3 tally. Plotts led the first mota from wire to wire for the win. However, in the second mota, Wallace led the start and rode 10 very fast laps, with Plotts only a few bikelengths behind the entire moto. Plotts tried to catch Wallace but just couldn't do it. Wallace won the mota but didn't win the overall because of his third-place finish in the first moto. Plotts rounded the switchback first turn with the lead in the first 250cc Open Pro/Expert moto. In tow were Casey Clark, Chris Hunter, Lee Rostien and Wallace. After half a lap, the top three were unchanged. Wallace passed Rostien for fourth. Plotts had a three-second lead by the start of lap two of this 1O-Iap moto. Plotts and Clark were pulling away out front, but behind them the battle for third through fifth was just getting started, as Wallace caught and passed Hunter for third. Plotts continued to pull away and had a five-second advantage by lap three. With the top four unchanged, Carsten entered the top five after starting about eighth. Plotts just kept adding to his lead each lap, making his lead seven seconds by lap four. Carsten was charging and quickly passed Hunter for fourth on lap four. On the following lap, Wallace passed Clark for the runner-up spot, dropping Clark to third. It didn't take too long before Carsten caught and passed Clark for third. Carsten then set out after Wallace and began pressuring him just before lap six. Carsten managed to make the pass for second rather quickly, just after the start of lap six. Wallace was relegated to third. Unfortunately for the spectators, after so much passing, the rest of the moto turned out to be a bit of a snoozer, as the top five had spread themselves out. Plotts crossed the finish line with a seven-second lead. Rounding out the top five were Carsten, Wallace, Clark and Rostien. Wallace led the start of the final moto, with Plotts, Carsten, Clark and Hunter trailing. The leaders quickly spread themselves out by lap two, and the only battle on the track was the one for the lead. Wallace couldn't afford to make a mistake, as Plotts was only a couple of bikelengths away. Wallace rode nearly perfectly. Plotts just couldn't get quite close enough to make a solid pass. Wallace held on for the win, with Plotts, Carsten, Clark and Hunter in tow. Plotts and Wallace are tied for first place in series points at ] 9, after two of five rounds. Carsten is second with] 6, and Hunter is third with ll.
