APR. 26-27 While driving down from New England in a hauler with a bunch of new Hondas, Chad Charbonneau of Litchfieid, New Hampshire, had plenty of time to get fired up for this Loretta Lynn's Amateur Motocross Nationals area qualifying race. Sitting aside an Amish farm, the large estate of the hillclirnbing Thompson family hosted a tu.>o-Qay event, with a bountiful bunr:h Qr rfders intent on making the trol.. (0' Tennessee for the prestigious National Amateur Championships. During Saturday's racing, young Tyler Bowers powered his Team Green KX85 to two moto wins in the 85cc (7-11) class, as the Buckeye State native served notice that he is the one to beat in the youngsters' 85cc classes at Loretta's. Another local, Levi Kilbarger of Logan, took his Yamaha YZ250F in for two overalls, in the 125cc Stock class and the Schoolboy (12-15) division. However, the man of the day - and the weekend - was Charbonneau. He took three class wins on Saturday. The 16-24 Support class, the 250cc B Stock class and the thundering herd of the Four-Strokes were all were led by Charbonneau. On Sunday, Charbonneau won two more classes - the 125cc B Modified class and the 250cc B Modified class - after fighting off two brilliant riders, KTMmounted Michael Willard and South Carolina's Jeff Sparks. Sunday's spectators were treated to an appearance by legendary local fast guy Mark Burkhart. Though he is still recovering from injuries, the Sport Cycles Yamaha-backed racer led the Pro Sport classes before fatigue and arm pump set in. ....,..'A 125 C MOD: I. Eric Crow@ (Hon); 2. Smage Tops WOTA Op_enerBy CRAIG GERNHARDT CROSS PLAINES, WI, APR. 27 Last year, Elkhorn, Wisconsin's Noel Smage won the WOTA season opener's Champion class. Last year, Phillip Smage was runner-up in the Expert class to Torque Center's Jeff Lois: Phiilip moved up to the Champion class this year. Last year's number-one Advanced rider, 12-year-old Patrick Smage; AI's Junkyard's Paul Philbrick, the 2002 number-three Expert; and NATC Support-ciass champion Dave Rohrschneider from Elgin, Illinois, all moved up to the Champion class as well. So which Smage won this year? All of them. But it was Moose Racing Equipment! Ryan Young Products-sponsored Phillip who took the top spot on the podium. His younger brother Patrick finished third, with 49 dabs. Papa Noel finished fourth with 56 dabs. Phillip started the event with four cleans before section five ended his streak. After loop one. his card had seven dabs to Rohrschneider's 11. On loop two, Phillip again strung together five more cleans and another loop score of seven, to Rohrschneider's 10. On the third ioop, Philiip almost doubled his previous two-ioop score with 13 dabs, finishing the day with 27 dabs totai. Rohrschneider tried to close the gap on the third loop, tuming in his best loop (seven dabs), but he finished second, one dab behind with 28 totai dabs. Lois had a mental meltdown on the second loop, fiving three sections for 15 huge dabs and winding up in fifth with 63 dabs total. "I fell apart like something you buy at WalMart!" Lois bemoaned later. Cross Plaines is located 14 miles west of Madison. It has rolling hilis; steep, deep and wide, dried-up, rocky river beds; and lots of fa ilen trees. _--- Trials master Wes Wilcox and Pete Laubmeier designed 10 sections for every class, and 43 riders came from three states - Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Minnesota riders passed on this event, as did NATC number-one Expert rider Jesse Wellenstein and NATC number-three Expert rider Brad Viiland, both of whom competed in the year's first National in Southern California over the weekend. As for the Minnesotans, one can only guess why they would elect to stay home on such a nice. sunny spring day. Fishing, maybe? With Lois, Philbrick and Phillip Smage ali moving up to the Champion class, some new riders will battle for this year's title in the Expert class. Sherco rider Alex Wiles from illinois took a couple of years off but came back where he left off: in first place. Elkhom's Scott Loveless also took a year off but showed no signs of rust, placing a strong second, in front of Rock River Motorsports/Torque Center/ Club 95-sponsored Jeff Knaack, on his new 2003 Sherco 2.9. Last year, Loveless suffered engine problems on a Gas Gas, and it wilted under his riding style. This year, "Lovie" switched to a Beta. The surprise Expert was Ed Poihber. who had acquired the moniker "One-Loop Eddie" for not finishing more than one loop in two years. Ed finished with 63 dabs and 10 cleaned sections on the day. Advanced riders had an easy day with the sections - so easy that every rider had at least 10 cleans except one: Dan Cotter. Keith West· phai, who logged a grand total of 15 minutes of off-season riding, showed he needs to move up to Expert by taking four dabs on three loops; he cleaned a total of 26 of the 30 sections as if he was riding in his parents' drive· way. Illinois Trials man and Vintage master Brian Runyards almost matched Westphal's feat with five dabs and 26 cleans. Runyards is on that fine line of riding In a class he . . - - , - - - - - - , ...--,,---,------,..--....,1:; a: '" Z a: I UJ C!J C!J ;;' a: '-' iIi ~ a.
