Florida Trail Riders MX Series Round 10: Showtime Mo"'rsports Park Theus Thrashes Waldo By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON WALDO, FL, APR. 13 The final round of the Florida Trail Riders Motocross Series took place at the very fast Showtime Motorsports Park in Waldo, Florida. Everyone who attended had a great time, and the ones who did not show just missed out. The track was in perfect condition all day long. The weather was great. with temperatures topping out in the low 80s. Suzuki rider Matt Theus thrashed the com· petition on his 85cc machine. Four mota wins led to the overalls in the Supermini and the combined 85cc A, Band C events. Theus was never seriously challenged in any mota and even took the time to look back at the start of one mota to see who was behind him. In the first combined moto of the A, Band C classes, Theus led the field down the long start straight. Following this blur of yellow sunlight were Brendan White. Travis Kortessis, Christopher McBride and Ryan Benesh. By the end of lap one, Theus and White had pulled away from the rest of the pack. White tried keeping pace but slowly dropped back about a second per lap. Kortessis rode a lonely third on the track, as McBride dropped back a few spots. Moving up to fourth and fifth on the track were Benesh and Robert Prather. The second mota was all Theus once again. Kortessis got the jump on White to hold second for a couple of turns. White slipped under into second at the large bowl turn. Kortessis eventually had to hold off Benesh to win the C class, and Prather passed Trace lash for fifth. In the Supermini matos, Theus ran away to the wins, with White giving chase. Justin Pyecha finished third twice. The battle was for fourth in both motos. Kortessis beat Benesh to the line in the first mota. In the second mota, Zash stayed in fourth most of the mota until Benesh got by. Hunter Harbin got his first win of the series in the 65cc C class, but it was not without a fight. Harbin led the first moto, followed by Matt Johnson and Cody Bruce. Johnson later fell, handing Harbin the win while Bruce moved up to second. There was a three-rider battle for the next spot among Tyler Goins, Bradley Castonguay and Dallas Blake. Castonguay got by Goins, and Chris Baker moved up to finish fifth. Four riders went at it tooth and nail for the lead in the first part of the second mota. Baker led Harbin, Bruce and Johnson. The four kept trying to pass one another, but no one could make it stick. In the end, Baker pulled out a few bikeiengths over Harbin. Bruce kept Johnson at bay for third. Fifth on the track went to Goins. One of the fastest motos of the day was the combined Over 25 and 30 contest. Michael Allred led Jason Brown, and the two stretched out a lead_ Brown kept close in the beginning but dropped back a few seconds at the end. Brent Driscoll led the Over 30 riders, as Andrew Faust and David Rankin followed. Showtime Motorsports Park: Matt Theus (22) takes one of his many holeshots on the day, ahead of Brendan White (46), at the final round of the Florida Trail Riders MX Series in Waldo. Brown grabbed the lead in mota two, but it was Allred who led after lap one. Brown faltered and dropped behind Driscoll, in second. Brown put the afterburners on and passed Driscoll on the next lap and then passed Allred on the next. Brown pulled away: Allred tried closing back in but eventually dropped back in the pack. Driscoll took over second, and Faust was third. Joel Gregor wound up fourth. The fastest one on the track for the day was Sage Foster. The Yamaha rider took the 125cc B, 250cc/Open B and Four-Stroke wins. In the combined 125cc Band C contest, Foster led and let the C riders duke it out for their class win. Cody Neff led Marty Crawford and Ryan Martin. Crawford soon lost second and third to Martin and Justin Williams. Crawford later dropped well back in the pack. Martin challenged for the lead and passed Neff before the white flag flew. Williams fell, and Michael Hall moved up to third. Chas Benesh got fourth, and Aaron Keisler heid off two other riders for fifth. Neff led the C -class riders the second time out. with Martin hot on his heels. Martin made the pass again to take the win and overall. Neff settled into second, while Williams kept it on two wheels for third. Hall ran fourth until falling on lap two. moving up Keisler and Josh Shaffer. Williams came back to win the Youth (12-15) class with a 2,1 score over Neffs 1-2 tally. Kyle Ditzian took third both times out. Bryant Coker and Kyle Loring traded places in the two motos; Loring got fourth in the second mota for fourth overall. This was round four, and the defending champion made the passes when they mattered most during a friendly five-man duel. Leivan described the race as "one of the best I've ever been in," and the rest of that five-man pack echoed those sentiments. Several miles of the course, which was just over eight miles, were shared with the A TV race from Saturday. There was, however, a mile and a half of tight virgin trail as well as a long, narrow creek bed and a section of grasstrack with several terraces. Nonetheless, the MO Dirt-promoted event was fast and allowed for close racing. Holeshot honors again went to Doug Stone, on his Donnell's/Stonework's Suspen· sion/Scott/Dunlop-backed Honda. Aaron Shaw followed on his "lost but then found" Yamaha, while Caleb Wohletz got going in third. Team Green's Chris Nesbitt and Leivan were next, but Leivan hit a rock and sampled the soil just a mile into the race. After the first of six laps, the top five riders hit the checkpoint with only nine seconds separating them. The order was Stone, Shaw and Nesbitt, and then Chris Thiele and Leivan on their WR450F Yamahas. Positions were shuffled on the next lap; only Stone held on to his spot. Only six seconds separated the five-man pack this time, with Nesbitt, Leivan, Shaw and Thiele behind Stone. Traffic was starting to become an issue, and Stone was growing tired of being the engine of the train. Leivan had moved around Nesbitt, and when Stone heard the four·stroke behind him, he intentionally went wide, allowing himseif to be passed. "I didn't know if it was Steve or Thiele behind me, but it didn't matter," Stone explained. "I was having a tough time getting us through the lappers and figured those guys could make more noise than me." Leivan was quick to take the lead, and he led the pack into the pits after three laps. e U e I e Within 15 seconds, Thiele, Nesbitt, Stone and Shaw had all passed through the check as well. Leivan picked up the pace and actually pulled away from the rest of the pack during lap four, only to be reeled in before completing the circuit. "I was riding pretty hard and thought I had gotten away, but then I heard them coming; we hit the grasstrack, and Thiele was all over me," Leivan said. and that was exactly the case. as Thiele used an inside line to draw even with Leivan exiting the final grasstrack turn and then utilizing the better line going back into the woods to take the lead. The pack was down to four, as Shaw had dropped back by a minute. Still, the quartet of Thiele, Leivan, Stone and Nesbitt rode just seven seconds apart after four laps. Leivan and Nesbitt both stopped for fuel and Stone grabbed a pair of goggles, while Thiele blew through the pits and tried to get away. Stone gave way to Leivan once again, but he hitched a ride with the" J O·time champ" in the pursuit of Thiele. Race Tech/NGK/ProClean/Flatiand Racing/Factory Effex·backed Leivan saw his chance in the tight woods and used a line that he had learned from Stone earlier in the race. The line gave Leivan the lead once again, and soon after, Stone used another alternate line to move himself into second. With one lap to go, Leivan had seven sec· onds on Stone, who had nine seconds on Thiele, who had 16 seconds on Nesbitt. As Leivan tried to pick up the pace, he lost the front end entering the back side of pit row. "I was on the ground and rolling before I knew it," Leivan explained. "The Yamaha lay there and kept running, waiting for me to get back on." The miscue allowed Stone to get closer, and the two locked into a fierce but friendly last-lap duel. Haifway through the finai pass through the woods, Stone used the same line he had used to pass Thiele and took the lead from Leivan. Although he was surprised, Leivan stayed cool and looked for a chance to retaliate. That chance came just a few minutes later, when Leivan found an inside line and returned the favor. Just then, Leivan got around a couple of lapped riders and put a few feet of real estate between himself and his n e VII" S MAY 21,2003 61
