Cedar Raceway: Eventual runner-up Bryan Mullin (822) leads eventual winner Kyle Summers (114) in 125cc C Stock ac1ion at the Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier in Cedar City, Utah. The Great Piney Woods Enduro: KTM rider Clay Boring wrapped up his first overall win of the 2003 SERA race season at round three in Fort Polk, Louisiana. Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier Cedar Raceway Southern Enduro Riders Association Series Round 3: The &reat Piney Woods Enduro Weeck Strong in Cedar City Boring Breaks Bad By DICK GOOOWIN CEDAR CITY, UT. APR. 12 Redmond, Washington, charger Tommy Weeck showed up at the Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier at Cedar Raceway in Cedar City, Utah, on Saturday. April 12, to concentrate on just one class: the 85cc (7-11) Stock contest. And concentrate he did - hard enough to win both ends of the clash and earn the overall trophy. Dixon, California's Jacob Locks exploded out of the blocks to lead Brush Prairie. Washington's Landon Currier, Cortez, Colorado's Eli Tomac and the rest of the field as moto one cranked up. Currier and Tomac took over the one and two spots. but Weeck was the one on fire, raging through the pack to rip past Tomac and then drive underneath Currier in a sweeper to take over the lead. Weeck, Currier and Tomac were tearing around the track nose to tail, as St. George, Utah's lach Ahleen, Grand Terrace, California's Blake Baggett. Edgewood, New Mexico's Jason Anderson, and Las Vegas, Nevada's Ronnie Goodwin were caught up in a wild brawl for fourth. As the race enterect its final stages, Weeck built a small lead, but Currier and Tomac were still joined at the hip. Weeck took the race-one win. Currier edged Tomac for second, and Anderson just nipped Baggett for fourth. Baggett stormed off with the holeshot in the second half. leading Weeck and Tomac around the sweeping first turn. Weeck took over the lead at the crest of the hill, and now it was Weeck. Baggett and Tomac who were just inches apart. Goodwin was leading Ahleen, Currier and the rest of the troops. The top three formed a very fast freight train for most of the race until a bobble by Tomac dropped him out of the lead pack. Weeck finished up with his second straight win - a very narrow victory over Baggett - while Tomac recovered for third. Just as impressive was Kyle Partridge's performance in a very strong 125cc B Stock class, Ronnie Gamble ripped the holeshot to start things off. Adam Harvey and Devin Sullivan were close behind. Sullivan grabbed the lead, and Partridge was charging through the pack. Partridge tucked in behind Sullivan In second and then railed the crest of the big hili to take over first. Sullivan settled into a solid 60 MAV21,2003· cue I e second, while Joshua Grant was holding off Andrew Bakken and Adam Harvey for third. Partridge cranked up the pace as he carved up the course, building a sizable lead on his way to win number one. Sullivan flashed through the pipes safely in second, and Grant led Bakken and Harvey in race-one results. Partridge roared out of the gate to lead Kappy Kealamakia, Bakken and Sullivan when the gate dropped for moto two. Sullivan was ripping it up, quickly battling his way into second. Partridge, however, was already turning up the heat, setting a blistering pace that would increase his lead almost immediately. When Sullivan dropped it on the west side, that opened the door for Kealamakia to take over second. Kealamakia also ran into trouble. leaving Bakken and Grant to fight for runnerup honors. Partridge scored another impressive moto win, giving him the overall 125cc B Stock-class title. Grant made a midrace finishline tabletop pass that would put him in second place, and second overall. leading Sullivan, Bakken and Kealamakia in the final tally. APR. 12 The rain and mud of the Mississippi and Louisiana territories have tormented those attending the first races of the 2003 SERA race season. Between the Enduros and Hare Scrambles. SERA riders have washed their share of mud off of bikes. helmets. gloves and other race necessities. However, April showers were nowhere to be seen in the Kisatchie National Forest at Fort Polk, Louisiana. site of the 23rd annual Louisiana Trail Riders Association Enduro. as people gathered from the TSCEC and the SERA series to ride their sport of choice. Racing action started on Saturday as the future enduro champs lined up for the kids' event. LTRA held the Pee Wee (0-8) and Beginner Pee Wee contest on a short but challenging course. Spectators marched down the trail along with the LTRA members. helping out the little ones on those tiny 50cc mounts. Dodging trees and roots that look a mile high to them isn't exactly easy for these kids. However, Brennan Reed managed to make his two laps, greeted with cheers at every corner. Reed took first place on his Hattiesburg Cycles PW50. Next, Pee Wee racers Payne Jones and Hunter Rowland duked it out throughout their three laps. Having lapped all the other riders, these boys were on a mission! Jones placed first in the Pee Wee class, and Rowland finished a very impressive second. Next, it was time for the Intermediate (7- 10) and Vet Kids to show what they had in store for those Great Piney Woods! As the racers lined up, SERA chairman Randy Parke did a "sound test" on each class - to see which kid could holler the loudest, thus teaching an old enduro trick in effective but safe passing. Then the Intermediate kids were let loose. Tyler Carter had the fastest time in this class. Chris McMillan took home the gold in the Vet Kids class. All these super kids showed good sportsmanship at the LTRA event. With a mudless race in sight, the first row of the enduro took off at 8 a.m. Sunday moming. The first section was a semitight 6-mile test, followed by the famous LTRA "12-mile moguls." These long, challenging mounds can provide a true endurance test for even an experienced rider. There was an observation check hidden deep within, just to make sure no one missed out on all the fun. The third section was a whooped-out, fast, wear-you-down section. It was 14 mjles long but had plenty of blacktop for a quick cooldown. The fourth section was for long~course riders only, consisting of a 4-mile fast section followed by a very tight 2-mile section. At check seven, the fastest time was held by AA rider Nolan Knight, who dropped only a three, while several other AA riders dropped fours. It was in the last section that KTM rider Clay Boring broke bad on them by dropping only a two. Boring successfully wrapped up his first overall win in the 2003 SERA race season, with a score of 14. He said he had a good ride with no spills and was very impressed with the layout of the race. Wrapping up second was Knight, with a very impressive 15. Knight said he had an awesome ride all day until the last section, where several crashes cost him a score of three, to Boring's two. Glenn Myatt, Cody Potts, Mike Monroe and Matt Joachim tied with scores of 17, while Carsten Cagle and Nathan Knight tied with 18s. Nathan mentioned that he had put new forks and shocks on his KX. "It beat my brains out: Nathan said, but he added with a smile that, overaU, the race was the best that LTRA had ever hosted. These AA boys had better watch outl SERA has some awesome riders coming up right behind them. Aaron Womble, a Crider, dropped only 23 points on his Kawasaki darned impressive for a Novice! Another boy looking for some respect is Junior Open rider Dustin Stevens. who finished the day with a 24 on his KTM. Can Boring break bad again? What will these upcoming youngsters show at the next race? The fourth round of the SERA series will be the Gulf Port Sandblasters Enduro! The efforts of John Reed and the LTRA members who participated in putting on a very successful event were much appreciated.
